A few problems. . .
The book is nicely produced and packaged, and the photos and directions are pretty good.However, I had problems folding a few of these things--I followed the instructions to the letter but wasn't satisfied with the results.I emailed the author asking for help with the problems I encountered but never had a reply.I agree with another reviewer that though the book is probably fun for newbies, many of the projects are identical to those in other books.But, there are some fun projects.

Paper foldng
I chose this book to make interesting card and scrapbook pages as well as a new craft to "play" with.The first use was for reserved seating notifications for our daughter's wedding. Guests were quite taken with the folded letter.Then I took the book and some paper to the nursing facility where my mom lives.She used to sew and quilt a lot so I thought I would try some techniques with her.Even though she has dementia, we accomplished two projects and will do more.She is very proud of her work and shows it to everyone.She says it helps keep her hands and mind active.So we are now planning new ways to use our projects when she and I make them - gifts of note cards, fun designs, etc.

Very good updated version of Prehistoric Origami
This book says it has 25 models on the front cover but it actually has 31.Most of the models are directly from the previously released Prehistoric Origami book.There are 9 new models in this book along with a few redesigned models.Only 2 models were left out of the previous book.The models are from extremely simple to very complex.As in all of Montroll's books, the models are very detailed and the instructions are very clear and well diagramed. ... Fantastic realistic looking origami projects
The book is great. Some of the projects are easy enough for a six year old to do and kept his interest over 3 months. Thepaper is at the back of the book, so always available and is labelled so that you know which paper to use with which project. About half of the paper is specially chosen for each project, so there is giraffe paper, elephant paper, paper for the birds/penguin, the mummy, the various fish etc. The paper is two sided where necessary for the project.There are three pages of stickers, one entirely devoted to different eyes for the different animals and the mummy, which give the finished model a very realistic look.The instructions are mostly clear, with pictures for each step and very few words. The only drawback is the division of the book into the three sections - it should have been done by the ease of each task. The book is better than the depiction on the cover.

Fun for kids on the go!
This origami book is full of travel trivia and fun origami projects. The origami is very simple. Even a child who has never folded a single sheet of paper could do these projects. Most projects use a single sheet of paper. There are a few multi-sheet projects and a few that require cutting - but not many.

There is so much paper in the back of the book that several children could share. The book contains about 100 pieces of 7" square origami paper. The paper is very colorful, but slippery. It is great for the projects in this book but does not work well for more advanced models. Most of the colorful paper is single-sided but very nice. The paper designs are specific to the book's projects and there is enough paper to do 2 of each project.

The book also comes with 3 sheets of stickers that can be used on the completed projects.

This book is so fun and colorful that even adults and children used to more advanced origami will have fun with it. Perfect book for traveling!

elegant and beautiful models
Origami is a beautiful kind of art , which I view as analogous to music.Similar to music, origami books are like notes that each performer may interpret in his unique way.With this analogy, Montroll, for me, is the origami Bach, while Lang is the origami Rachmaninoff.After some bad experience with other designers, until recently, I only "played"Montroll's and Lang's models, however when my son insisted he wants also models of witches and warriors, I agreed to buy this book, and I do not regret. The models of the witch, dragon with warrior, and lady, are in my opinion masterpieces. They are very elegant, and relatively easy for an experienced folder. The only reason I rate this book as 4 star and not 5 is because the instructions are not as clear as in Montroll's books and there are some minor errors in the diagrams.

for the enthusiast
this is an extremely good book and one of the few that is actualy HARD. i bought this wen i was an intermediate and ive struggled but now i consider myself slightly advanced. if you new to origami dont be foolish and take this book or you will COMPLETELY fail. this book isfor the ones who really want to test themselves. great book and fun to do with great models that appear in yuor hands

Great figures; terrible production values.
These figures are, clearly, for the advanced intermediate and very experienced origamist.They are clever, and many have very detailed (and many) steps.

However, the main reason I rated the book rather low is that the figures are very hard to see since they are printed in a very dark ink, and the instructions are, in many instances, almost impossible to see.It would have helped greatly if the diagrams were not printed so darkly -- indeed, the sample pages given when ordering are NOT what is seen. Also, it would have helped if there were some sugggestions as to size of paper with which to begin.

I suspect that very experienced folders will play with the models and will be successful, but I also think these great figures would have been much more accessible -- as they should be as they are really good -- had the authors or publishers used a bit more care in what the end book would look like vis-a-vis the diagrams. ... Not what it's cover shows
I ended up returning the book.I was specifically looking to learn how to do the 3D pear on the front cover.There was no pear project inside but they did offer the Eiffel Tower (techinical migraine), and with very minimal instruction.Everything else was very boring to me.

Springboard, not a template
This is an excellent source book for overview of different types of paper art and engineering. The writer supplies ample photos of her own and other artists' work to demonstrate the finished product for the techniques used. Even the simpler projects include photos of the construction in progress, with specific attention to details of technique and how to use supplies and tools. Diagrams are used when needed to convey the concepts more clearly. Just browsing through, I could understand the folding and construction directions and see how this translated to the finished pieces. Read a few captions, and you realize all the little gems of knowledge and advice that are imparted--details that will make a difference in the successful application to your own project.
This book is not for those who want models and instructions 'insert tab AA through hole 16 into slot c1B'. It will give you the knowledge to take a project from start to finish, and maybe the inspiration to transition from crafter to artist.

best in its field (of one)
This is the best book I've seen (and I've looked through EVERYTHING at Barnes and Noble and Borders stores) on making all kinds of three-dimensional paper creations. In fact, it's pretty much one of a kind. True, as another reviewer says, it doesn't have patterns for the illustrated projects, but it does have good instructions. I would think that most people would want to come up with their own works by using the illustrated techniques, and being inspired by the author's finished projects. After all, the idea is to be creative, isn't it?

Where are the patterns?
The illustrations were beautiful, and I was disappointed to learn that patterns were not included.

Good artistic selections
Diane Maure-Mathison does a good job of putting together a nice selection of creative ideas with paper. She focuses on creativity and simple ideas that can be easily expanded. Excellent book!
I read this book in the same day I received it. It is extremely informative. The first chapter details the history of papermaking. It talks about paper not only being used as a means to record our history, but also as an art form.

Chapters 2 through 4 cover the basics of papermaking. Supplies and equipment you will need, techniques to adopt, and of course the how-to of it all. Even down to creating your own watermark. It gives simple instructions for building your own molds and presses that anyone with access to a lumber yard can make. All-in-all, the art of making one's own paper seems to be quite inexpensive, and this book makes it seem like with just a little practice, one can easily become an expert.

The 5th chapter seems just a little more advanced. Once you master the basics, you will be able to go through this chapter and learn how to use 3-Dimensional molds, imbedding objects (like leaves, flowers and larger fibers) into your paper, and even making a portfolio to display your work.

An Origami Classic
Robert Harbin is known less for his own original designs than for his compilation of other artists works. This book is a classic which primarily showcases the work of the early creator Patricia Crawford. Possibly her most famous design, a square-rigged ship, graces the cover and is not especially hard to fold. What makes this book difficult to deal with is that the diagrams are hand-drawn and from a time when there was no standardization. nevertheless, I was able to blunder through this book with decent results as an untutored beginner. The models include a "Scorpion", "Unicorn", "Mermaid" and especially a "Swan" which, though primitive by today's standards, are nevertheless true classics of American origami innovation. Note: If you can fold a crane from memory, this book is probably perfect for you!

This one's a classic.
This book was originally published in the 70s under another title. My High School library had a copy.
I'd found the simpler models to be quite nice, as a beginner at the time. The more complex models were absolutely eye popping, and gave me something to aspire to.
Five years after grad., I'd tried to buy a copy, and found it out of print. I was glad to see it's come back.
The mermaid is very cool, and seems to be floating through a tuft of seaweed, and the fully rigged ship is a truly
majestic vessel. The unicorn in this book is one of my favorite models.
Don't pass up this book, especially at this price

Best Value for Money
This is one of the best.30+ model in a thin and inexpensive volumn.It's really step-by-step if you fold the model page-by-page.I recommend beginners not to skip.It really like an exercise book.For advance folders, there are many great models to fold.Because of this step-by-step approach the number of diagrams are kept to the minimum.Beginner picking models (not from the start) will find this a difficult book to follow.

Great book for the advance folders
Although I have started folding for about 3 months, I would consider myself as an advance folder having folded models such as Voyer's horse, pegasus, Brill's elephant, Ronald Koh's rocking horse, etc.The first time I came across this book, the cover say "step by step", so I skip it.During my last visit to the local book store I browsed through it by chance and was pleasantly suprised.30+ models and mostly advance, for just US$4.95, what a great deal!The diagrams are not "step by step", but adequate for advance folder, it does save a lot of space.

for VERY exiprienced folder, ready to fight for each step
Well, the book is ..., contains interesting models that you will not find anywhere else, BUT:Title absolutly misleading. Even thought it contains several easy models, majority of interesting models are very complex.Even if you could handle it, be aware that:Diagrams are awful and I would like to emphasize it: every model contains a steps that are difficult to follow , from misleading to sometimes erroneous, imcomplete - some very complex steps are just sketched and you will not even see a result picture on next one, text description of steps is very pure. May be that is what autor wanted to say in the title: you will fight for every step to find out what is drawn here. Never done origami, book was great!
I've never done any origami, and the text and pictures make each step very clear.Many of his pictures show difficult folds in progress so youhave an idea of how the doozy folds get done.I agree with the reviewer that says he abandons his colored/white side of the paper shading.I'm doing origami now with my 6 yo, who might become addicted to it, and although he's too young for the book, I find it makes me a very successful origam-ist, which enables me to teach him!It also has so many folds to try.We'll be busy for a long time trying to do all the folds presented in this book.The folds in the beginning are easy, in the end are very difficult.We will have fun for a long time!Very pleased with the book.

Big challenge:)
I love it.I am totally in love with origami.The book is very helpful but you need a patient.The origami inside are not very easy but that's the point:)Step by step I try to do my best.

Paged through the book, won't bother folding anything
For full disclosure, I like my origami with square paper and symmetrical folding...this is not that kind of book.Most of the models in this book started with odd-shaped paper like a triangle or a rectangle with weird dimensions like 1:1.414 or really long skinny sheets. I don't even know if the size of paper required for some of the advanced models is readily available even if you were to cut it to size.Other models require folding the paper into 1/5's or 1/12's in the first step...I don't like to use a ruler and calculator to get those folds right.I know all this may seem a little picky, but that's just me.Even the ones starting with perfect squares looked too simple and I wouldn't bother folding.

The author, Lang, co-wrote a book with John Montroll (who adheres to my strict requirements), so I thought this book might be worth a shot.That was a mistake so now I keep this book as a reminder not to buy anything not written by Montroll...My origami hero.

But if you can get past that, take your chances

Beginners Beware!
Robert J. Lang is probably the most famous origami artist alive. His approach to origami transcends the simple craft aspect and has helped elevate it to a true fine art. This book was his first publication and it came at a time when the art of diagramming was still coming of age. Thus the diagrams can be a bit difficult to follow. In addition, it is only recently that Dr. Lang has devoted most of his time to the simple square so many of these models are produced from very odd rectangles which must be painstakingly measured and cut.
This book might be a good choice for the collector or fairly advanced folder, but certainly not for the beginner.

Excellent, but very frustrating Book.
I have enjoyed this book for the past 18 years, and have figured out about three quarters of the full content.But I have been frustrated for the past 18 years, too... I have never been able to go past the 32nd step of the grand piano figure... and I wonder if anybody has ever been able to figure out how to finish the whole model!!!I wish Mr. Lang would demonstrate how he does it himself in one of his videos... and then I would be so much happier!!! ... Not very useful
I make origami greeting cards for craft shows and do a lot of origami in my craft classes and I was hopeful that this book with have some new ideas, but only use this book for one design and that's the fan. Disappointed.

Easy
The origami models in this book are fun and VERY EASY to make.I highly recommend it for teachers wanting to introduce students to the wonders of origami.However, this is not a book for those who enjoy making challenging designs

A nice book for children
This book shows you how to make flat pieces (flowers, fans rockets, Santa Claus,etc.) of origami that can then be affixed to a card.It does not show you how to make the actual card using origami. While it may entertain your children, I feel it has limited appeal for adults. For those looking to make beautiful cards using origami they should check out "Creative Cards" by Yoshiko Kitagawa.Creative Cards is not limited to origami folds, but it is a wonderful book with many lovely cards.

Don't buy it!
Actually, I'd like to give this zero stars. I bought the book and returned it immediately. This is essentially ONE rather bland sailboat, with variations. Drawing quality for plans and discussion is poor.

Paper Boats that actually sink
At first i give a starting level to this book of 3 stars, following to the book, i have encountered some several advantages and disadvantages.
Advantage : Good Quality diagrams (+1 Star)
Disadvantage: Terrible models (basically the boats are a variation of one base that keeps producing a near similar product of the original. (-1 Star)
No Pictures for clarity(-1 Star)
High Cost (save your money, and buy a better and cheaper bookby authors like john montroll and robert lang)(-1 Star)
Boats dont actually float in water (-1 Star)
So there you have it ) stars, but i wont be mean and give in 1 star for effort made in publishing this book

Look elsewhere
I flipped through this book in the store and thought that something seemed wrong--every model in the book looked the same! Well, on closer inspection, there were a few differences (not many, though!)

Why this publisher continues to waste its resources on Roselle is beyond me. Do yourself a favor: buy a book by Jeremy Shafer, Robert Lang, John Montroll, or Marc Kirschenbaum instead. ... Read more

every origamist needs this book
This is by far one of my most loved books. I came across his etsy site first and ooohed and awed and even drooled some over his work. Then I saw he had released a book and I just had to own it. The book focuses more on technique and has very little in the way of diagrams, but that is what I loved most about this book. The author really took the time to explain how to become a successful origami bonsai folder. He chatters on about taking walks in the woods with his dog and finding inspiration in nature. I especially loved how he talks about painting paper and the steps to go through. I love to fold flowers and often times became frustrated with the paper because it simply didnt capture what I wanted it too. Now I look forward to painting my own. The book is very informative and has inspired me. I look forward to more releases from this author.

nice book
this book has nice photographs for the step by step process in how to make origami bonsai. but it was a little to simple for me.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but it is surprisingly thorough and greatly illustrated with step by step directions for not only building your own origami bonsai sculptures but also how to care for and ship them as gifts or to customers as you choose.It's one of the coolest books I've read on origami that provides a PRACTICAL application that melds two crafts together.There are advanced topics on scaling, selecting props and accessories and more.I love this book and highly recommend it to others. ... It's a hoot!
I was searching for something else and found this book.I could not believe my eyes when I saw it and I had to tell my friend about the unusual subject matter.Of course I had to get it!We all had a great time laughing and folding a case of toilet paper and then entered them in a local art exhibit.Too, too, much fun! ;)

Overall worth purchasing
The projects are easy and turn out looking great, even the first time I tried each one.Lots of different folds, or variations on folds, to turn out some cute projects.

I would have given this book 5 stars, except that all of the photos are in black and white -- none in colour.It gives the book a sort of "cheap" look, and does make it (insignificantly) more difficult to see exactly what's being done at each step.

A Bathroom Nice Touch....
Something a bit out in "right field" and fun.It does catch one's attention and I have receive some comments about the TP roll "artwork".Very easy to follow instructions.

LOVE IT!
Love this book!I started making flowers the first day I got it in the mail, so pretty, so fun, people are wow'ed and amazed and what I can do now.This would make an amazing engagement or wedding gift as part of whatever else you're giving them.People first think this whole idea is silly, but then they love it when you do that something extra special for them.It's impossible not to smile when you see that someone did that little special thing for you.

Excellent and Easy
This is a wonderful book with plenty of pictures and relatively clear instructions.I had remarkable success with these even after being much less successfully with towel and napkin origami.The designs are beautiful and charming; though unfortunately that does create a prominent downside: no one wants to tear the art off and actually use the roll.:)I would still recommend this book very much; excellent way to liven up your bathroom.

Good, although kitsch
It's a good and detailed guide to an origami technique that's awesome and plenty of possibilities. And the models are somewhat easy to accomplish, although they require patience, time and a lot of hard and repetitive work to do, so it's aimed to fans of modular origami. I take one star off the book because the models, in general, display a "kitschness" peculiar to some oriental tastes (no offense intended here, please!), but once you master the tricks and the possible combinations in assembling the ONE AND ONLY module necessary to form the shapes, you can with little effort design your own models.
Also, I've already seen this book (or one pretty similar) in Japanese, or Chinese (sorry, really can't discern!), and the translation seems pretty good, so to say, it's intelligible and have no grammatical or semantical mistakes that I could notice so far. Overall a good buy if you are found of modular origami, and the price is very nice too!

Worth every penny and then some.
I bought this book a couple years ago.Used the Temari ball as a pattern to make ornaments.Made a basket, some cranes and now I am working on the Peacock.

All I had to do was take one crane to church and boom I had orders.I've sold enough cranes to pay for the book a dozen times.

And if you want to know if the book is clear enough for kids.I showed it to a lady at church.Her 9 year old daughter borrowed the book, made a baby swan and took first place in a regional art contest.

One of my favorite things to do is to keep a bowl of prefolded peices handy.I play with them like Legos and when my friends come over their kids spend hours "buidling" with them.

My only regret is that the author has not released even more books.

Wonderful book
I bought this book for my 14 year old son who has done origami for the past three years, he found the instructions very clear, and was delighted with both the variety of shapes that were given, and how easy it was to modify the shapes to create different designs.

Grat book to start of origami projects
I first saw a swan in a japanese restaurant and was interested in learning where they got it from. The owner of the restaurant said he had made it himself and reccomended this book to me to learn for myself.
This book has really good explanations and step by step instructions to start with. the diagrams are very useful and the initial pages teach us how to fold the paper and all that.
it does get difficult to make the more complicated objects like the swan which requires about 600 pieces...it is better to start of with something small...
also it is pretty time consuming,,and as they say in the beginning of the book it is really nice for someone to have espescially if he is recovering from an illness...
i wud absolutely reccomend this book...

Deceptively easy
I first saw completed 3D origami projects of the dancing crane and peacock done by an older Japanese gentleman, who had lots more origami years under his belt than I, and said, "WOW".

He handed me his 3D origami book to look at and within a few moments I realized that I could do any one of the projects shown too.

The instructions are very easy to follow. You might find it more difficult to find the exact paper you want.

You are folding the same size paper into triangles for projects then assembling them into rows to create your 3D project.

Be patient, some of the larger projects require hundreds of triangles. The good-luck hyotan (gourd) takes 762. Looks great when complete in gold or silver foil. I used gift wrap and cut it to the appropriate size because this required so many triangles.

In the end, you'll be very pleased with a completed project and your friends will be amazed. ... Read more

A Must have for Advanced/Intermediate folders.
This book is excellent. It shows the skill level of the models on page 17 and it's well organized and neatly put together. With each model there is a crease pattern at the beginning ( I guess just incase you can go by the creas patterns instead of the diagrams. Also there are wonderful pictures in the back of the book which shows each model on how it should look; including a bonus of placing each model in it's natural setting. I personally am well pleased and I look forward to a challenge out of this book.

Advance Origami
So finally I found an Origami book with advance models, square paper, good models. Models are 3D. If you are new to Origami this book will be almost impossible to do. terrific book for an experienced origami artist
my son started folding when he was 7 and has become an enthusiastic origami artist.He likes this book because it has some designs that he can fold plus more challenging ones to work on over time.There are mathematical explanations for how some of the folds work--great for his 4th grade mind (although perhaps a little advanced).

Origami for Connoisseur
I collect Origami books. Each book has something new. This one does too but I mostly buy it for some of the known folds such as Kawasaki Rose.

A near perfect book on origami
The origami collected in the book is very interesing. Also the instruction is as detail as everyone-can-do. The only cons is the instruction is on the back of the paper you use for the origami, which means either you have to figure out a way to follow the instruction during the process, or you use other paper.

Can't put it down!
I have been reading this book and folding models every night since I bought it!It serves as a great introduction into some more advanced folding techniques.The models are very interesting and the directions are easy to follow.The book is structured like a reference book and easy to use.The pictures inside are 2 tone, but high quality.

A brilliant work of art!
I recently got this book for my birthday, and months from now, I'm still doing much of it. I've made nearly all of the models, and even did one of the 300 sonobe units modulars. I've tried the stegosaurus, and I'm starting to be able to clean new ones. Everything I do astounds my classmates in various classes.

Even though I've been told I'm crazy, I started the 900 unit sphere with a couple friends, and we have over 150 units put together.

This book has some models for beginners, but I'd say it's more for intermediate-advanced folders. The rose is defintely one to try, although it took me a couple tries just to get it. This is my current favorites origami book out of at least 10. A definite must-buy. ... Read more

Great range, from simple to simply amazing
I received this as a gift, and even though I am not a very dextrous folder I was able to immediately see how approachable many of these designs are, combining fun--and often surprising--models with clear descriptions. The quality of the photographs, reproductions and the printing is also very high, so this feels as much like an art book as a crafts book (hooray for hardcover).There are plenty of moderate-to-complex designs too for those a bit more ambitious. Sure, the clever author plays a little loose with the exact "10 folds" concept but who cares when the models look so great!

Addictive origami
I just got this book last week as a gift and have been busy making my first origami pieces. It is very addictive. When I got stuck, I called the author, Peter Engel, and he personally came by my office to go over the some of the tricky folds. He truly is the master. I hope to finish this book soon so I can move on to Peter's earlier book "Origami from Angelfish to Zen"

More ways to do the paper folding.

Not So Clever
I thought I was going to get instructions for little origami figures/animals but that is not so.Most of the designs require more than one sticky and the designs are pretty ridiculous as in "What the heck would I make that for?"I'm not even inspired to try one design and I am an artsy crafty person!It's a waste of money for the book and a big waste of sticky notes.I'm glad I bought a used one for a few bucks.

nice gift for the cubical dweller
I bought this for a sibling who worked in a cubical office with computers.As anyone who works in computers knows there are times when you just have to sit there waiting for the computer to finish "thinking".According to my sibling this was a great little thing to keep their hands and mind busy when they would have otherwise been bored stiff without it taking away from the job at hand.

Have a friend or family who works in a cubical?Keep this in mind for their birthday.

Not the best book for the office
Sticky Note origami contains a lot of models that you would have already seen in many basic origami books.Many of the models do not actually have to be folded with sticky notes.

If you want a book for some quick cleaver folds for the office, I suggest Office Origami: The Highly Successful Slacker's Guide to Workplace Procrastination. Its another basic book, but I'd rate it higher than this one.

With that said, this book is not a complete write off, the Wizard shown on the front cover is quite cool.I guess its not too bad for the price, and maybe beginner folders would like it.

... it wasnt what i thought it would be. but its great... something to do at work. i was able to make a few things... but i need'd the correct sized post-its and didnt have any... o'well
