Excerpt:Canemah Historic District Canemah was an early settlement in the U.S. state of Oregon located near Willamette Falls on the Willamette River . It is now a district within Oregon City . Location Canemah was located on the east side of the Willamette River, about a mile above Willamette Falls. At that time, Oregon City was a separate settlement, and was located below the falls. The two towns were connected by a path, later upgraded to an ox track. Canoe landing for the First Nations From the earliest times the place was inhabited by Native Americans , and was considered by the Calapooya nation to be part of their territory. All canoe traffic up and down the Willamette had to cross the portage around the falls, of which Canemah was the southern point. The name "Canemah" itself means "the canoe place". There was said to have been a dispute among the Native Americans as to which of their nations would control this important place, resulting in the murder of the people, apparently also called "Canemahs" who had occupied Canemah and claimed the right to charge tolls for use of the portage. Pioneer settlement The first European American settler at Canemah was Absalom F. Hedges (1817 1890). He arrived in Oregon City in 1844, and found all the good lots already taken. He went south to Canemah, and staked out a Donation Land Claim close to the canoe landing place. At that time, water travel above the falls was still almost exclusively conducted by the Native Americans using canoes, although they also acted as paddlers... ... Read more

Excerpt: Oregon's 5th congressional district represents Oregon's central coast through Salem, north to the southern Portland suburbs, and east to the summit of Mount Hood. It includes Lincoln, Marion, Polk, and Tillamook counties, most of Clackamas County, and part of Benton and Multnomah counties. It gained its current portion of Multnomah County from the 3rd district in the 2002 redistricting, but also lost a significant portion of northern Clackamas County to the 3rd district. The district is currently represented by Democrat Kurt Schrader, who was elected in 2008 to replace the retiring Darlene Hooley. This marked the first time in the district's history that a new representative had the same party affiliation as the outgoing representative. The district was created in 1982 when Oregon was ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=6812554 ... Read more

Excerpt:The Abernethy Bridge, viewed from the south The Abernethy Bridge is a steel plate and box girder bridge that spans the Willamette River between Oregon City and West Linn, Oregon , USA. It is also known as the Oregon City Freeway Bridge and the I-205 Bridge as it carries Interstate 205 . The bridge was opened on May 3, 1970 at a cost of $15.9 million. An $8 million seismic retrofit began in 1999 and was completed in 2002. The bridge structure contains 15 spans and 60 girders. The total length is 2,727 ft (831 m) and the vertical clearance at low river levels is 85 ft (26 m). The longest span is 430 ft (131m) and is sandwiched by two 300 ft (91 m) spans. The bridge carries six lanes of traffic (3 in each direction two through lanes, and one merging lane). Interchanges are located at each end of the bridge on the western end (in West Linn) is an interchange with Oregon Route 43 ; on the eastern end (in Oregon City) is an interchange with OR 99E . The bridge is somewhat unusual in that its western approach is located on a bluff overlooking the river, whereas the eastern end is located in a lowland just south of the confluence of the Willamette and Clackamas rivers; as a result, westbound traffic on I-205 travels uphill the entire length of the bridge, and continues uphill for another half-mile before the ... ... Excerpt: The Enterprise was an early steamboat operating on the Willamette River in Oregon and also one of the first to operate on the Fraser River in British Columbia. This vessel should not be confused with the many other vessels, some of similar design, also named Enterprise. In earlier times, this vessel was sometimes called Tom Wright's Enterprise after one of her captains, the famous Tom Wright. Enterprise was built at Canemah, Oregon in the fall of 1855 by Capt. Archibald Jamieson, Captain A.S. Murray, Amory Holbrook and John Torrence, in the fall of 1855, for the upper Willamette trade. Her officers on the first trip upriver to Corvallis (then known as Marysville) were: Jamieson, captain ; Chandler, purser; and Torrence, engineer. George A. Pease was afterward employed as pilot, and John Marshall, engineer. Willamette Falls, 1918. These falls at Oregon City separated the lower and upper Willamette. From 1855 to 1858 Enterprise was operated on the Willamette River, running between Oregon City, Canemah, and Corvallis. At that time Corvallis was considered to be the head of navigation on the Willamette. Merchants above Corvallis tried to get Captain Jamieson to bring Enterprise, which he then commanded, above Corvallis, but he would not go farther than Orleans, then a small settlement on the east side of the river across from Corvallis. Capt. Thomas A. Wright (1828-1907), owner and commander of Enterprise 1858-62.In July 1858, Jamieson sold Enter...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=20040787 ... Read more

Excerpt: Baker City is a city in and the county seat of Baker County, Oregon, United States. This city was named after its county. The population was 9,860 at the 2000 census, with an estimated population of 10,140 in 2008. Platted in 1864, Baker City grew slowly in the beginning. A post office was established on March 27, 1866, but Baker City was not incorporated until 1874. The city and county were named in honor of the English-born U.S. Senator Edward Dickinson Baker from Oregon. In 1911 the city dropped "City" from its name, but restored it in the late 1980s in recognition of its history and to further encourage tourism. Today, Baker City is represented by Base Camp Baker, recognizing the area as a central hub of recreation and cultural tourism in Eastern Oregon. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.9 square miles (17.9 km²), all of it land. The city is situated in a valley between the Wallowa Mountains to the east and the Elkhorn Mountains, part of the Blue Mountains to the west, with the Powder River running through the center of downtown on its way to the Snake River. As of the census of 2000, there were 9,860 people, 4,010 households, and 2,602 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,427.5 people per square mile (550.9/km²). There were 4,435 housing units at an average density of 642.1/sq mi (247.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.14% White, 0.30% Afric...http://booksllc.net/?id=130675 ... Read more

KBCH was acquired by Yaquina Radio, Inc., on November 16, 1959. The new owners got authorization from the FCC to change frequencies to 1380 kHz and increase daytime power to 1,000 watts but at the sacrifice of becoming a daytime-only station. Further changes were in store as, in March 1965, the station changed its legal community of license from Oceanside to Lincoln City, Oregon. Excerpt: Sandwich City Hall -Sandwich City Hall was constructed in 1878. This building reflects the post-Civil War Second Empire style, meant to evoke the spirit of the early years after a war that broke apart the purer architectural styles and mingled together in a mixture of revival styles. The construction was funded by a bond issue of $10,000 approved by the mayor and city aldermen in Sandwich. Eventually, a $2,000 cost overrun required additional bond issues. The city turned over the design of the structure to local architects Enos and Israel Doan. The building was completed on schedule in January 1879. The finished product was 48 by 80 feet. The first floor had 12 foot ceilings while the second floor included a balcony and 22 foot ceilings. The building became a complete community center when it was completed. The first floor housed the mayor's office, the city clerk's office, council room, visiting judge's chambers, engine room and a marshall's office. The marshall's office had five jail cells. The upper floor of the building became the opera house. The opera house became an all-purpose theatre. It featured shows of all types, vaudevillian, Shakespearean, lectures, Women's Christian Temperance Union meetings, recitials, high school plays and graduations, church gatherings, firemen's ball and many other events. As other facilities became available to clientele the Opera House was left idle following World War II. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.8 square miles (10.0 km), of which, 3.7 square miles (9.7 km) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km) of it (2.86%) is water. The area is located 13 feet (4.0 m) above sea-level. In 1845, Mr. Johnson, a cook on an English ship sailing along the Columbia River, deserted and traveled down the Willamette Valley. Establishing a land claim in Champoeg, he began removing brush and that summer set off a burn to clear debris. The Champoeg Fire got out of control and spread eastward. Unfortunately, the wind then reversed direction and strengthened, blowing the blaze around the previous burn and fanning it into the dry Coast Range, where it burned in the Yamhill basin for weeks, consuming 1,500,000 acres (6,100 km) of old growth forest - the largest such area destroyed in a single forest fire in the United States. Settlers did not live west of the Coast Range, but the small tribes of Native Americans in the area, already depleted by 80% due to malaria and other epidemics from 1830-1841, were driven from their lands. The Nestuggas were one such tribe, that had previously been encamped just north of Pacific City near the town of Woods. While they had noticed the smoke for several weeks, but were surprised one morning as the bright flames flickered atop the crests of the surrounding hills and rushed down on them. The Nestuggas fled by canoe down the Big Nestucca River to the ocean, and took refuge on the half-mile wide bare sandspit between Nestucca Bay and the ocean. After several weeks the fires were ended by a heavy rain, but the devastation had been complete: ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=130949 ... Read more
