Product Description
The only climbing guide devoted to Washington’s Olympic National Park—now completely updated and expanded with more than thirty percent additional new material.• New Alpine Rock, Crags and Sport Routes, and Bouldering sections added• Expanded historical and biographical anecdotes • GPS waypoints added for key route descriptionsFrom the hard basalt lava peaks of Constance and The Brothers, to the high-angle faces of The Needles and Sawtooth Ridge, to the sandstone and vast glaciers of Mount Olympus, and hundreds of other mountains large and small: It’s the definitive climbing guide authored by Olympic Mountain Rescue (OMR), a group of volunteers dedicated to saving lives for the last 50 years through search, rescue, and mountain safety education. In preparing this new edition, OMR drew not only on their own extensive experience throughout the range, but also on the knowledge of the National Park and Forest Services and other organizations and climbers.

This greatly expanded new edition adds an Alpine Rock section featuring classic climbs, a Crags and Sport Routes section revealing several rock climbing challenges within a short walk from roads, plus great bouldering locations. In addition, there are enhanced route descriptions for "High Alpine Traverses" including refined Bailey Range data; new traverse legs have also been added. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Olympic Mountains #4
This is a great guide and Amazon was a very good (and easy) place to get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good guide to bad rock
If you already know that you want to climb in the Olympics and want a some decent beta on the climbs, then this is not only the only guide out there for you, but it's really quite good. The route and approach descriptions are generally well detailed and accurate. The book includes scrambles, alpine routes, rock climbs, old school alpenstock und lederhosen ridge treks and even some bouldering areas.
If you don't already know that you want to climb in the Olympics and are thinking of buying this book to come up with some climbing ideas, look elsewhere. The Olympics are the last place you want to go for a few recreational climbs. There are indeed a few classic safe routes, mostly scrambles, on good rock. And there are a few decent alpine routes in these mountains.Mostly though, you've got a range of very poor quality basalt that is heavily weathered and breaks off readily. The book is full or routes with warnings about bad rock and the dangers of party inflicted rockfall.
So yes it's a great guide, but for the small percentage of climbers that want to tackle something a little wilder and less tracked out.

4-0 out of 5 stars only climbing guide to the Olympic Mountains (revised)
This is the fourth edition of what is, as far as I know, the only climbing guide to the Olympic Mountains. Most of the content of the book seems to be barely revised. In particular, many of the routes in the book are very simple sketches -- things like "follow the rocky ridge for 0.5 miles, class 3". However, what do you expect from a book which covers pretty much every summit on the peninsula?

What's new in this edition is two sections which try to bridge the gap between traditional guidebooks (like Beckey) and the modern crag climbing style of guidebook. The first section is called "Alpine Rock Climbs" and gives more detail about some of the class five routes (including a few route topos). The second new section is "Crags And Sport Routes", which is pretty much self-explanitory.

As before, the book also has sections on High Alpine Traverses and Winter Climbing. Also as before, the main part of the guidebook is organized by geography, with the mountains separated into seven "groups", separated by major river drainages.

Note: like Beckey, this is not a hiking or camping guide. It is assumed that if you want information on the approach trails, you will get that elsewhere. ... Read more

Product Description
Olympic Event Organization is the first text to address a number of important questions in contemporary mega-event management:

* Which organizations are involved in the Olympic Movement and in what capacity?
* What are the interorganizational flows of authority and finance between them?
* How is work grouped, in what unit sizes, how specialized and formalized are work processes?
* How complex, dynamic, diversified, or friendly is their environment?
* What are the power issues and how do the technological processes affect these organizations?
* How do the OCOGs evolve in their life cycle, what pressures shape their structures and management processes and how is work co-ordinated?

The examination of the Olympic Games event organization in the 10-year period, from bidding to post-games closing down, draws material from host cities to explore the types of interorganizational flows that take place at various stages for the Olympic Games to be delivered. Knowledge transfer from one host city to the next and an established organizational field also means that management practises sometimes follow some externally imposed organizing logics. The challenges faced by organizers are discussed and the tensions that a strong management template from the IOC creates are also examined. Finally, the issue of sustainability of the Olympic Games is identified along with an analysis of the ways in which the concepts of impact are appropriated by the various stakeholders involved with the Olympic Games as they attempt to influence public opinion.

Written in an accessible and insightful manner Olympic Event Organization is essential reading for both academics and practitioners alike.

* Accessible, insightful and highly topical this is the first text to focus on the nature of the Olympic Games as the ultimate mega event
* Strong theoretical analysis of processes and challenges in the lifecycle of the Olympics event organisation, from bidding to closing down.
* Rich material drawn from direct sources in case studies of Sydney 2000, Salt Lake City 2002, Athens 2004, Torino 2006, Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Olympic Games ... Read more

Product Description
"Dishonored Games: Corruption, Money & Greed at the Olympics" reveals the truth behind the Olympic myth.

Every four years, the Olympics are celebrated with a flood of congratulatory coverage. In all the books, articles and documentaries extolling the beauty and purity of the Olympic Ideal, only cursory notice is given to the Lausanne-based International Olympic Committee (I.O.C.) and its little known President, Juan Antonio Samaranch.

Dishonored Games explodes the carefully cultivated image and idealistic hype behind the I.O.C. and its self-perpetuating leadership. The book reveals influence peddling, lavish gifts and bribes, and abuse of power in the Olympic movement.

Including:

THE MYTH: The Olympic Games are the greatest festival of sport; they belong to the people of the world and are a magnificent demonstration of decency, fair play and openness.

THE TRUTH: The Olympics are now the plaything of the world’s top twelve multinational companies, who pay hundreds of millions of dollars in sponsorship money. Doping is still rampant. Sports leaders promise to crack down but do little.

THE CLUB: The Games are controlled by a self-perpetuating oligarchy who travel the world like kings, most taking lavish gifts from cities desperate to cash in on the huge profits the Olympics now generate. In 1990 we saw the humiliating resignation of a leading member of "The Club". He had been caught taking "consultation fees" from business.

THE LEADER: The authors reveal that the ruler of the Olympic movement and world sport is a man who spent nearly forty years of his life as a fascist politician serving one of Europe’s longest-lived dictatorships. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Best Book Ever'
Having worked seven Olympic Games this book still proved insightful to my first {Korea in '88}.I knew a lot of what was being stated, but the detail and sources of information gathered for this book was outstanding.Hats off to the authors for doing a great job.

The Olympics have changed and although there is still some issues with the 'Club' things are a lot better.I hope that they continue to get weeded out and the Games return to how and whom they should be for...the athletes and the fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars It contains breathtaking information
After reading Dishonored Games my head was spinning for a while. I knew that multinationals are heavily involved in sports today but I never expected the magnitude as displayed in the book. The unbelievable behaviorof the Olympic committee that sold out the Olympic idea should be commonknowledge, just as Samaranch's political past. When you finfish the bookyou'll be excited to learn that there is a sequal, called New Lords Of TheRings which is just as informative. Too bad Amazon doesn't have this titleyet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Frightening. It will change your ideas about "sports."
Dishonored Games, as the title implies, is about how the Olympic system has been corrupted by big business and international politics. Yes, this is a subject we hear about often enough these days, but Simson and Jennings take it all the way. The central figure of the book is International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch, about whom most of us (including myself) know absolutely nothing. Samaranch, it turns out, served under the fascist Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, an ally of Hitler. After WWII, Samaranch governed the Catalonia district, where Barcelona is the capitol, and it was he who made sure that those who questioned the government were tortured or were "disappeared." When Franco died in 1977, Samaranch was run out of the country in disgrace. But he had gained much of his power through the manipulation of national sports, raking in the money that comes with that territory. He had made many friends in the international sports community, and by 1980, he had gotten himself "elected" President of the IOC. Having the Olympics in Barcelona was in many ways Samaranch's way of "retaking" the city. There is also the story of Horst Dassler, the German businessman who founded Adidas and used the company to create the system of product endorsement which has come to symbolize the death of the "art" of sports today. Together with Samaranch and other sports dignitaries, Horst's business heirs manipulate elections and other government affairs the world over, through bribery, favor-trading and even prostitution, to fill the already bursting coffers of the IOC. It is all incredibly frightening. The only problem with the book is its style. Simson and Jennings are obviously very angry over the whole subject, and that anger comes across a little too strongly. But their frustration is understandable. In the introduction, they write, "To our surprise it has turned out to be the most difficult investigation we have ever undertaken. In recent years, we have written, or made TV documentaries, about the Mafia, the Iran-Contra affair, terrorism, corruption within Scotland Yard and other dark areas of public life. The world of Olympic, amateur sport has proved to be the hardest to penetrate. Never before have we found it so difficult to obtain on-the-record interviews, documents and original sources. It is a secret, elite domain, where the decisions about sport are made behind closed doors, where money is spent on creating a fabulous life-style for a tiny circle of officials, where money has been siphoned away to offshore bank accounts and where officials preside forever, untroubled by elections." Shortly after their book was released, Simson and Jennings found that the IOC had slapped them with criminal charges. Not in any of the 30 countries in which the book has been published, where democratic laws of freedom of speech exist, but in the IOC's home country of Switzerland. They must have been on to something ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Does not offer degree of difficulty or description of elevation changes
Extremely unhelpful. Does not rate trails with respect to degree of difficulty; nor does it indicate whether trail is generally level, uphill, downhill, etc. Descriptions are wordy and vague. Where was the editor?

5-0 out of 5 stars Avid Olympic backpacker
Bottom line: This is an absolute must have for anyone serious about backpacking in the Olympics. Every trail, including ones that barely exist anymore, are included in this book. Lots of useful information. Perfect for planning trips.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate.Read at Your Own Risk
Warning: This Book May Result in Serious Injury or Death!Multiple times on a recent trans-Olympic backpack this book let our group down, and a couple times trusting Robert Woods' advice placed us in danger. Most of the inaccuracies were related to campsites and where to find them...or that they even exist at all!The most extreme incident was his depiction of Bone Camp on the trail coming down from Hayden Pass.It did not exist, and there were no other campsites. As a result our group spent 5 hours hiking in the dark on steep trails to get to the next camp.Had his writing been accurate in this case and several others, we would have had a safer and more enjoyable hike. When i bought this book i was excited about the amount of detail, but i simply cannot afford to trust Robert L. Wood. I suggest buying another book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useless for me
As a day hiker going to the Olympics for the first time I found the book rather useless and much inferior to a day hiking book a friend brought (Day Hiking, Olympic Penisula). It is of little help in choosing which trail to do, it has poor to non-existent maps and does not give elevation change data. It is exhaustive on the mountain trails (including abandoned trails), but it does not include beach hikes, only mountain trails.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
This is the best and most informative trail guide to the Olympic Mountains. Bob Wood has hiked most of these trails himself and he has written book on the history of Olympic National Park. This book contains information you will not find anywhere else.Sadly Bob Wood has passed away and this book is getting a bit dated. ... Few poets of Timothy Liu`s generation are better known or more widely celebrated. Each of his books has been widely reviewed, and critics single him out as a master of language and, in Marilyn Hacker`s words, as `a poet of eros in all its guises.` Gay and Asian-American, Liu stands by nature outside the mainstream and brings to his poetry a radical independence and ambition that can transform his work into fire storms of conviction and insight. Hard Evidence is by far his most ambitious book yet, bringing to language a wild delight and assertiveness that make these poems among the freshest and most innovative of this or any decade. ...
