4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This book is very easy to read.Chapters are short and to the point.I would have like to have a chapter on fetal development though.Patients ask all the time..."how big is my baby now?" "does he have ears yet?" (there is nothing in this book to help with those questions =(

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative but disorganized
The information in this book is good and relevant, but the book is frustrating to use.

To call a book a new edition, they have to change something like 30% of the book.It seems like they didn't have enough new info to make a new edition, so they just mixed up the existing info, even though it doesn't make sense. For example, the "Gynecologic Procedures" chapter only gives the indications for colposcopy. You have to go to the Dysplasia chapter to find out the details of the actual procedure. It's annoying to have to check several different locations to get the full story on a topic.Maybe with the next edition they'll put the info back in an order that makes sense.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
I was surprised when I began reading this - it feels less a text and more a collection of documents from ACOG. In hindsight it was a great tool for covering the GYN/OB content because each topic covered was concise - this is definitely an asset when one has to read a lot of material for class. The illustrations where great too(colorful and descriptive). This is a good go-to for practice since you can quickly and easily review specific material. Why 4 stars - now, if they only had an e-book version it would be perfect!

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY book you need for OB/Gyn Clerkship
With so many resources out there for medical school clerkships, sometimes choosing the right one can be exhausting. Most of the time, I rely on review books, but even that is difficult because there are so many options and little continuity across clerkships. For example, Blueprints was great for Peds, but almost useless for Medicine. Case Files is generally pretty good for most clerkships, but its always a gamble because its generally limited in content and often important concepts are not adequately addressed.
Obstetrics and Gynecology by Beckman is a rare example of a textbook that is comprehensive and concise. It is easy to read, and really hits all of the key points that are important on the wards and for the shelf. It works great as a quick reference because the topics are intuitively organized, and current references are provided for nearly all content.
Most importantly, it is written is conjunction with The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists- so you know the source of the information is legitimate. They basically tell you what is important to know according to the current guidelines.
Also, its short and to the point, so its perfect to use as a reference when studying for step 2. So far it's the only textbook I've kept around (other than Harrison's) for studying for step 2. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A real good book...
Personally I need books that explain things thoroughly in order for me to understand concepts. That's why I enjoyed Goljian's pathology book over BRS pathology after having used BRS pathology for 2/3 of my pathology course. This Blueprints book lies somewhere between how factual BRS path is and how Goljian's pathology is in terms of level of explanations. It's well written and easy to understand. But, many times it doesn't take the time to explain reasons or concepts behind various pathological findings or testings or why various testing findings are the way they are. That's why I'm not rating it as a 5 star product.Otherwise it's been a pleasure reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Med student go to book.
This is an excellent source for a beginner learning OB/GYN.It has a good breadth of information from labor and delivery to GYN oncology, and it is well written. It reads like a textbook, but the author does an excellent job keeping important points in without filling the page with extraneous information.I was happy with how simplistic it was to read for a 3rd year med student. It really doesn't require any outside resource to understand, and it has more than enough information to get you through your shelf exam at the end of a clerkship. It does have its downfalls, however. The questions at the end of the book are great, but they don't allow you to practice questions at the end of each chapter. Also, it fails to lack that clinical teaching that helps students recognize the condition when it is presented in a clinical vignette. For these reasons, I recommend using Case Files along with this book, which is an excellent companion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Medical student worthy for wards
This book is pretty much to the point. If you are looking for more wordy info,...get another book. But it's quick & dirty which is awesome for medical students. It's an easy read for boards!!I like this book so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This is the first time I've used Blueprints. It is written in textbook format, which I don't like, but it is also terse and only tells you what you need to know. I just outline it and study off my outline.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blueprints: OG/BYN
Yes. Awesome. Practically everything you will need to know for your rotation, but definately comprehensive enough to cover your OB/GYN needs outside of OB/GYN and probably 100% of your OB/GYN step material. For sure. Could probably use a little more fetal heart monitor interpretation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very handy and concise
I refer to this book often and have found it to be very useful. Using it as a tool to help me dictate my procedures helped me a lot in becoming more efficient. I also like to look at the common algorithms presented in the book when I have some free time. Topics are easy to find and read through. I would definitely recommend this pocket book!

4-0 out of 5 stars The gold-standard OB/Gyn handbook, but could be better
I've used this book as a 3rd and 4th-year medical student and am soon to begin my OB/Gyn residency.

Pros:
-Primary care section covers the big topics you might see in a typical primary care setting.
-Outline format helps pack in information
-Helpful diagrams, such as those for pre-eclampsia and abnormal uterine bleeding
-ACLS section (includes neonatal resuscitation algorithm)
-Concise medical spanish section
-Some high-yield anatomical drawings
-The new REI section is quite extensive (also a "con")
-The operative reports section is great. For residents, this may be one of the best aspects of the book.

Cons:
-Excessively thick. This edition gained a lot of weight/pages because Dr. Lebovic's REI handbook was basically added on to the previous edition. The length and width pretty stayed the same, so the book just got thicker. The book is too thick to carry on you if you're just wearing scrubs, but can be fit in your white coat.Even so, it just feels annoyingly bulky and heavy.
-Not well-indexed.The index could be more extensive and intuitive.I have only used this book as a third- and fourth-year med student, but I can tell you that there were many times when I tried to look something up in the index, only to get frustrated and wish that I had just searched for it via UpToDate.
-The binding needs to be stronger, given the physical characteristics of the book.My book is split in half, only held together by the cover.
-The length of the REI section. It's roughly as long as the OB section.Given the scope of what OB/Gyn med students and residents experience, that much REI is too extensive for this type of book.
-Even though this book is jam-packed with info, there are many pages that have a lot of unused space.Which makes the thickness of the book even more annoying.

Should you buy it?If you're an OB/Gyn resident or a medical student with an interest in the field, yes. This is the gold-standard clinical handbook for OB/Gyn.If you're a third-year med student who probably isn't going into OB/Gyn, only get it if you think you'd really benefit from carrying a handbook that has a lot of information that you probably wouldn't need/use.

I hope that the next edition is slimmer. It could be made a bit wider and longer, and could be more concise in some areas and have less wasted space in others. With these changes, the book could easily be less than 300 pages. If this were the case, I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

5-0 out of 5 stars very practical, easy to use, condensed, best handbook I have...
i am a primary care physician. this book is practical for women's health primary care info, charts, ob-gyn info, my first aid in rotations, in hospital care and office based care. My ob-gyn colleagues told that it was essential for ob-gyn residents/physicians, but I
would also recommend to med students, family physicians, all primary care dr.s...

5-0 out of 5 stars Obstetrics, Gynecology and Infertility: Handbook for Clinicians; Pocket Edition (Handbook for Clinicians)

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read - perfect for 10 minute breaks
A good book to read during the rotation, cases are easy to read and are short enough to read during those random 10-20 minute breaks during the day. Practice questions are sometimes irrelevant to the case, but nonetheless provide the opportunity to test your knowledge.

4-0 out of 5 stars Scattered information
The information was helpful as were the cases, however the information is scattered and needs to be updated. There are no provided page references back to prior cases with the same information so you must search yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Gem!
One of my favorite books in this series. It covered every question that I had on my shelf examination in no time flat and it was an excellent read.In fact, I read through it so quickly that it really left me with more than enough time to read through other books during the rotation. You will find that it rarely introduces a topic that is far fetched, and it will never leave you with too little information about the topic being presented. The questions at the end of each chapter were well thought out and inquisitive. It gives a clinical spin on every topic, and it covers all of the "most commons" very well.Make no mistake, this is one of the best in the series and should be used frequently by med students trying to pass their shelf exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars OB GYN intro book
I had wanted to get a book to reintroduce myself to the OB/GYN field which I had not seen since 3rd year of medical school (almost 7 years ago).Currently I treat predominantly male patients as a navy flight surgeon, this has been a good read so far to get into OB mind set as someone not in the specialty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent!
A very practical and complete book for medical students and for residents in OBG.
    I recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful for OB-GYN residents
I think my entire class of OB-GYN residents bought this our intern year. I still use it now as a third year. It covers a lot of the information you can get pimped on, and explains it well. It is small enough to carry around, so those slow rotations, where you have 5-10 minutes throughout the day, this is a good resource. The only negative things I notice is that there is a lot of information, so you have to read instead of skim. And the book cannot fit into my white coat pocket. But definately one of the books I rely upon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast delivery.
Came quicker than expected...within a few days. Also, was just as described - a new book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for New RNs in Women's Health/L&D/Maternity Depts, etc.
I'm a new Rn (13 months) working on the L&D unit at a large teaching hospital in Orlando, FL and I've been researching maternity nursing software for a new smartphone/PDA that I plan to purchase. The search lead me to the Skyscape website and this Johns Hopkins manual. Skyscape allows you to download a trial form of the software onto your pc so that you can view the product before buying. This is the 5th item that i've viewed today alone and I'm so incredibly HOOKED on the manual that I plan to buy it from Amazon immediately and purchase the pda software (though I am a little apprehensive about the software now based on reading the second reviewers comments on here).Anyways, I will be precepting a graduate nurse in a couple of weeks and I will totally recommend that she purchase this manual as well because it provides an AWESOME, EASY TO READ, TO THE POINT, description, instruction and medication treatment (dosage, side effects & contraindications) for EVERYTHING that I've encountered thus far on L&D - and I've only read the section on "Normal Labor and Delivery, Operative Delivery, and Malpresentations".I wish I had read this when I first started working on the floor because it would've provided a GREAT transition into this field of nursing from nursing school. The information provided is SHORT, SPECIFIC and VERY CLEARLY WRITTEN. Even though the manual is written for med students, it totally provides a great learning tool for nurses as well because it will help me with anticipating the need of the physician when providing intrapartum care on the labor floor, which in turn increases provision of effective patient care.A big THANK YOU to the authors ! :o))

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for your rotations
This is a compact book following the same formula for the other manuals from this collection (Ex Washington manual). It is not a treatise and it is not intended to be so, quite the contrary. It is a pocket book, easy to carry and to manipulate. It cover all the topics you might need for your day to day life in the hospital in a short , but not too short, and up to date format. I like the fact that you can read any chapter in less than 30 minutes. I recommend this book for medical students in need of a compact book to carry during the GOB internship or for revising topics before an exam.

1-0 out of 5 stars an utter waste of time (and EXPENSIVE)
Do NOT buy the PDA version of this classic manual. The manufacturer shipped me a mismarked (wrong Operating System) shrink-wrap package with a warning that opening it would disallow a refund. The correct product had been mailed despite the mislabeling, but the convoluted registration process was time-consuming and produced an INVALID activation code. The purported SmartPatch fix also failed. Now, 6 days after paying for the product, it still doesn't work and the short East-coast technical support hours mean that MAYBE tomorrow, the 7th day after purchase, I MIGHT be able to use this product. Had this manufacturer been less paranoid about piracy, using a more standard serial # activation (like OTHER manufacturers), I'd be a happy customer recommending their product. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard by which All Obstetrics Texts are measured
There is perhaps no medical specialty that has more misconceptions, "wives tales" and variation than Obstetrics.Williams Obstetrics is more exhaustively comprehensive than any other text for general Obstetrics.Williams has long prided itself on presenting "evidence-based medicine" - separating the wives tales from medical knowledge obtained from published studies from peer-reviewed journals.Perhaps there are those who prefer their Obstetrics with a little voodoo. For those who want to know the most up-to-date scientifically based Obstetrics, Williams is your book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty basic but well organized and good review
This book is good to read through while on the rotation and covers a lot of the important topics i think. It is pretty basic and you will definitely need to be reading other sources while on the rotation, but this is a good base.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok for basic outline
This is not worth the money if you're studying for the shelf.Maybe if reviewing for a rotation, but since you have to take the exam anyway better to get something more complete for both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fills in holes Blueprints leaves after reading.
I realized that this book really explains things that blueprints only touches on. Blueprints is great probably for passing a shelf exam and its very easy to read but its not as practical as the First Aid. After reading the delivery chapter I realized that everything I had done in deliveries is presented in there and things I had wondered about (such as FHR tracings) are explained in this book in a way that is more memorable than in Blueprints. Not that I haven't read them both. I have read Blueprints cover to cover and it is a good book. But this one supplements it so well.

5-0 out of 5 stars much needed info for the shelf exam
to be honest, i bought the book during my obgyn rotation and never touched it.i was told by classmates that i could pass the test by just doing casefiles, so i did... and i passed.but i didnt do as well as i could have, and later as i studied for the USMLE step 2, i realized how much of the material i really had not learned.i went back to quickly read this book then, and it had all the info i was missing. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for students
As a medical student in clinicals I found this book very helpful. The attending for my OB/Gyn rotation highly recommended it. It's an easy read and explains things well without being too wordy or detailed. It has a ton of questions at the end of the book, divided into chapters for review. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because I did notice that a few of the questions are incorrect. I would find the answers in the chapter to be different than those in the back. This didn't happen often, but enough to make me second-guess the accuracy of some of them. Overall a great book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview, Not Enough Detail
I used this book to study ObsGyn pre-clerkship, and it was fine, but when it came down to handling patients on the floor, this book did not have nearly enough detail. It's well written, and gives a good overview of most subjects, especially Obstetrics. But, if you want more info on Gyne, or actual patient MANAGEMENT, go elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick, Exactly What I ordered
I got a discount, and the book was in perfect condition.Exactly what I ordered. It arrived sooner than expected as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but at times frustrating
I bought this book because it was a known fact that our attending pimped students according to the material covered in each of its chapters.
However, I soon learned that Beckman's is one of those medical books that tries to incorporate every fact into its chapters, but it does so by simply stating the fact. That is, the book would mention a procedure or disease process, but would not expand on it, it would simply list the process or procedure and move on.The book also tends to cover alternative procedures almost to a tertiary level without completely expanding on the first option presented. This is useful if you want a complete index so you can claim that the book covers everything. But when you are being questioned by an attending on the pathologies or reasoning behind a procedure, it makes you look quite stupid if all you can do is rattle off a list.
I understand that most medical books need to be cross-referenced with others. But I believe in this scenario, Hacker and Moore's book is MUCH better. It covers all topics presented in Beckman's but explains why you do what you would do.I recommend comparing the two books before selecting one.I bought beckmans, but I constantly reread the Beckmans chapter with the hacker and moore I found in the school library. This allowed me to make a killing when being pimped. Both books are pretty easy to read. I would, however, say hacker and moore is even easier in terms of chapter layout and topics covered.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book for PA students
I found this book to be a wonderful supplement to everything I learned on my ob/gyn rotation.Everything I needed was in this book for my end of rotation exam on which I scored very well.I would highly recommend it. ... Read more

    Product Description

American Journal of Nursing (AJN) Book of the Year Award 2009 in the category of Maternal and Child Health

This telephone triage book is designed for use by professional nurses assessing and advising patients over the telephone on topics related to obstetric and gynecology. It is designed to crystallize the professional's existing knowledge base and to provide clear guidance on handling a wide variety of patient situations which the triage nurse might need to work through.

The introductory section outlines the key medical/legal, counseling, and practical aspects of telephone triage and includes a new chapter on the use of online information retrieval. Subsequent sections present specific protocols for selected obstetric, gynecologic, and women's health problems. New and expanded protocols in this edition include updated infertility management and medications, additional contraceptive methods such as NuvaRing and Implanon, current abnormal Pap smear management, hormone therapy advice, and emergency contraception options.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough & Concise
I bought this book to help guide me in writing triage protocols for the nurses in the office I work.As an experienced (former) nurse in obstetrics I found a lot of what is in this book making me want to give a big "duh!" or "no kidding, what did you think we'd be asking?"- but it's very good for a beginning nurse doing phone triage. The first section of this book includes the basics, legal considerations, and common challenges that triage nurses face.

I really like how easily this book is to read. It's designed to be able to quickly flip to the section you need. Each possible problem to be triaged starts with the pertinent questions to ask.It then breaks it down into easy to follow steps in how to properly triage the patient. Each section gives a brief rationale and/or risk factors that may influence the decisions made.

I think this book could also be used by the obstetric & gynecology nurse outside of triage as well. There is a lot of good information for nurses to use as teaching tools when meeting with women for pregnancy visits or even menopausal visits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Telephone triage for Obstetrics & GYnecology
This book is very clinically based in its approach. I have not seen another triage protocol book quite like it. It is easy to adapt to your own practice and has some GREAT charts in it. Covers numerous OB and GYN topics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good content and pictures, worth the purchase
First, I would like to note that the book was a little bit damaged when it arrived. I decided not to return it because it was in acceptable shape and I did not want to waste time in the process. But amazon should put more attention to the way they pack books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice quick review for a med student
The information in the book is quite sparse, but it's enough to give a functional overview of OB/Gyn so that as a med student, I didn't appear totally clueless in front of my residents and attendings that first week of the rotation. It's short enough to breeze through over a weekend.

I found it absolutely invaluable for the clinical case scenarios at the end of most chapters, which helped greatly for the oral exam I had at the end of my clerkship.

But, as I said, it's sparse on details, and I needed other resources to get through the rotation as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent high-yield source
I "met" Dr. Sakala when he gave his OB lectures on Kaplan course. When I learned that he also wrote the book, I was sure it will be a wonderful source of information. I was right - this book is a precise and perfectly written (with many tables, pics) high-yield facts that covered everything I needed in OB for my step 2CK. After each chapter he put several scenarios with several qs to each. In addition, at the end there is a wonderful chapter with "the most common" things asked at the boards. I would highly recommend the book to everyone who is planning to take step 2 CK and 3.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST TO PASS THIS PART INTHE STEP 2CK
If you want to pass OB/GYN in the Step 2CK. You need this book; explain everything so simple and clear better than First Aid. I used and pass with 220.

I would highly recommend this book to other med students who are preparing for the USMLE step 2. Really great

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for NBME Shelf Exam
This book is great for the NBME Shelf exam. I am a 3rd year medical student who recently took the test and this book hit most (if not all) of the topics covered by the exam. It also presents the topics in table form to point out slight differences in clinical presentation that will help you make the diagnosis. There is also an appendix that lists answers to "what is the most common...." which is helpful for the shelf exam and answering attendings questions while on rotations. This book also has some very helpful diagrams, particularly pertaining to twin placentation. I would highly recommend this book to other med students. ... Read more
