Product Description
An estimated one million people in Britain, and four million in the USA suffer so much from obsessional thoughts and behaviour that normal life is impossible. Intrusive, repetitive thoughts, and behaviour rituals such as compulsive checking and hand-washing, are an increasingly common form of mental illness. This book, the first to be aimed at the general reader, helps sufferers to overcome these obsessions. The author, Dr Frederick Toates, is an experimental psychologist at the Open University and a former sufferer from obsessional thoughts himself. ... Read more

Obsessive compulsive disorders can take many forms, as this book acknowledges. Indeed, the object of obsession/ compulsion often seems arbitrary - compulsion is a drive which can "cathect" (to employ psychoanalytic jargon) almost anything. I found the book useful in addressing the problem of obsessional letter writing and the attendant gratification of seeing one's name in print. I came to realise that this was in fact a symptom of something that it is not the place of this review to divulge. However, this book is not in itself enough and readers would be advised to read it in conjunction with therapy. ... Read more

Product Description
Obsessions are involuntary thoughts or feelings that arise repeatedly in a person's mind and are often described as worries by children. Most children over age 8 are aware that their obsessions are abnormal, and, consequently, they are often embarrassed and uncomfortable talking about them. Children, like adults, may exhibit unusual behaviors related to their obsessions. Perhaps one out of every 200 children under the age of 18 has obsessive compulsive disorder, and it is estimated that half of all the adults with the disorder first began to experience its symptoms before age 18. It is unfortunate that many children with the disorder are either not diagnosed or are incorrectly diagnosed because effective treatments are available. In this guide Dr. Johnston explores the problem and the many treatments. ... Read more

Product Description
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is now recognized to be a serious and chronic illness that affects more than 2% of the population. Although the last decade has witnessed many advances on both the pharmacological and the behavioral fronts, fewer than 50% of cases benefit significantly from currently available treatments. In this volume, leading authorities offer a comprehensive, cutting-edge overview of etiology, diagnosis, assessment of OCD, and the latest approaches to treatment. A special focus is treatment-resistant cases that comprise over half the total.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Contemporary Issues in Treatment will be an indispensable resource for all professionals who seek better solutions to the often seemingly intractable problems of their OCD clients.

Product Description
Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) has been a hidden epidemic. A federally funded study found that 1.3% of people interviewed at that time had experienced obsessive compulsive symptoms in the previous month and 2.5% had had the disorder sometime in their lives. While the severity of cases varies, at its worst the sufferer does nothing but compulsive rituals throughout all waking hours, often late into the night. Suffering from OCD can be substantially reduced because so much is now known about effective treatments. Here, Dr. Greist, an internationally recognized expert in the field, presents the basic information on the disorder. He includes checklists to evaluate symptoms and gives self-treatment suggestions. The questions answered here are those which have arisen in years of treating OCD patients. Whether the disorder is mild and can be self-treated or severe and requires professional intervention, this guide is a starting point for relief. ... Read more

Product Description
Now that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can often be successfully treated, it is being increasingly diagnosed and studied. Major advances have been made in our understanding of its causation, symptomatology, and treatment. Most OCD patients are relatively normal people who can be helped to lead completely well adjusted lives, once this disorder is remedied. They usually respond best to a combination of drug treatment with behavioural therapy. This report contains practical advice for doctors on the recognition and management of OCD - for the ultimate benefit of their patients. ... Read more

Product Description
Examine the fourth largest mental health problem in America—OCD—and how YOU can help!

Since obsessive-compulsive disorder affects 2.5% of the world population, someone you know is likely to have this disorder. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Guide for Family, Friends, and Pastors is a handy "physician's assistant" that not only provides a fresh overview of OCD but also focuses on the issue of scrupulosity—obsessive-compulsive anxiety over scruples in self and others—as a religious issue. Written by a pastoral counselor who is also a clinical social worker, this book will help you gain insight into the psychological and neurological dimensions of the disorder, the problems of those suffering from OCD, and the development of support groups.

Written with extensive knowledge and deep compassion, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Guide for Family, Friends, and Pastors presents the latest information available on OCD and its effects upon sufferers and their personal relationships. The information is discussed in both pastoral as well as therapeutic aspects, explaining OCD in the brain, then continuing with ways to help a sufferer manage the conflict. Special attention is paid to the issue of scrupulosity—"seeing sin where there is no sin"—which is especially symptomatic for many Roman Catholics, Orthodox Jews, and Orthodox Muslims. Filled with insightful case studies and a useful bibliography, this book helps you understand OCD from all sides while giving effective strategies for individual and group therapy.

In Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Guide for Family, Friends, and Pastors you will find:

answers to the most frequently asked questions

detailed explanations of terms

insightful information on pastoral caring

an in-depth exploration of scrupulosity

helpful information on trichotillomania (hair pulling), kleptomania (stealing), Tourette’s syndrome, body dysmorphoric disorder (hatred of a particular body part), and hypochondriasis

case studies highlighting personal and relationship issues

resources for further information on OCD

A Guide for Family, Friends, and Pastors is for pastors, pastoral counselors, chaplains, lay ministries, social workers, psychiatric nurses, marriage counselors, and for anyone who cares about someone with OCD. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Better books out there
Some good input, but not from a traditional Christian perspective. I found "Can Christianity Cure Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder" by Dr. Ian Osborn much more helpful and historically informative. Also, from a traditional Catholic perspective, books by Dr. Joseph Ciarrocchi are very good. This is the third book I've purchased by Robert Collie and I've found all of them to be wanting, both from clinical and religious perspectives. It may be due in part to his writing style, but I feel like offering that is generous. I found myself consistently asking questions about how he supports/explains his statements and feeling discontent with what I read. ... Read more

Such subthreshold disorders are frequently presented first to the primary care physician. This book reappraises the old related concept of neurasthenia and its relevance to modern-day general practice. ... Read more
