Product Description

Concentrating on techniques for the detection and measurement of radioactivity, this book offers a guide to selecting the type of counter, type of source sample, duration for which the counting must be made, and the radiation emitted by the isotope for its efficient detection. It introduces a novel concept to explain not only the decay processes but also the selection of counting procedures for detecting and measuring radioactivity. The author builds up the foundation from the nature of the interaction of radiation with matter. He also highlights the differences between an ordinary chemical laboratory and a radiochemical one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Nuclear and Radiochemistry
The second edition of this text is one that has been utilized in many graduate programs. In fact, the author of this review has utilized it not only as a student but as a teaching text in several courses.

No single text contains all that is needed for an immense field of study such as radiochemistry. However, it should also be pointed out that the weakness in this text is that although it does a thorough job of covering "nuclear basics" it is very short on the "radiochemistry" side of the field.Having said this, it is a must have text for any serious student in the field.

The third edition also includes an account of discovery of the elements beyond uranium. This section is a first hand account by Glenn T. Seaborg and Walter D. Loveland the team of Nobel Laureates that lead to their discovery. Both Glenn Seaborg-an active participant in the discovery of transuranium elements-and leading chemist, and Walter Loveland, provide a unique inside account of the discovery of these elements as well as the first definitive look at their chemical, physical, and nuclear properties.

Product Description
Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is an enormously powerful and versatile physical method for investigating the structure and dynamics of molecules. This text provides a clear, concise introduction to the physical principles of NMR, and the interactions that determine the appearance of NMR spectra. It describes and explains how nuclear spins interact with a magnetic field (the chemical shift) and with each other (spin-spin coupling); how NMR spectra are affected by chemical equilibria (exchange) and molecular motion (relaxation); and concludes with an outline of the workings of some simple one- and two-dimensional Fourier transform NMR experiments. The ways in which NMR may be used to study the structures, motions and reactions of molecules are illustrated and discussed. Only essential mathematics and theory are presented. The emphasis throughout is on understanding the basic principles. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Non-mathematical intro to the basics
This is the best introduction I've seen. It's clear and intuitive, but covers all the basics:
-- chemical shifts for a variety of binding structures,
-- the various isotopes,
-- line-splitting and spin coupling,
-- equilibria in chemical and physical state,
-- Overhauser effect,
and lots more. In other words, it covers everything needed for more advanced analyses, but does it without dragging the reader through every wave function. Somehow, the author packs all that into fewer than 90 pages without making it all indigestibly dense.

To get the book's full benefit, you'll need some background in chemistry, including a little organic, and maybe some physics. You won't need a lot of either - the first or second college course in each should be enough. The treatment uses a little algebra, but not a lot in the direct line of its arguments. The real emphasis is on the basic phenomena: on the concepts of electron shielding, on effects of different kinds of bonding, and on interactions between magnetic nuclei.

This book won't make you an analytic chemist. It could help, though. The text is well-suited for a prepared novice. It's illustrated with simple and descriptive diagrams. If you need to get the basic ideas of analytic NMR, fast, this book may be the best around. Other books cover advanced topics like NMR for protein structure. Read this book first, like an introductory chapter, and you'll have a much easier time with those more complex discussions.

This much information at this price is an incredible deal - it has my highest recommendation. ... Read more

The field of nuclear medicine is expanding rapidly, with the development of exciting new diagnostic methods and treatments. This growth is closely associated with significant advances in radiation physics. In this book, acknowledged experts explain the basic principles of radiation physics in relation to nuclear medicine and examine important novel approaches in the field. The first section is devoted to what might be termed the "building blocks" of nuclear medicine, including the mechanisms of interaction between radiation and matter and Monte Carlo codes. In subsequent sections, radiation sources for medical applications, radiopharmaceutical development and production, and radiation detectors are discussed in detail. New frontiers are then explored, including improved algorithms for image reconstruction, biokinetic models, and voxel phantoms for internal dosimetry. Both trainees and experienced practitioners and researchers will find this book to be an invaluable source of up-to-date information.

3-0 out of 5 stars It has some good moments
This book is full of biographical sketches of several people who made significant contributions to the development of chemistry. It has some good moments and it helped me appreciate the development of big chemical ideas, especially the rapid developments in the 1900's as newer experimental techniques were developed. The book can be a little wordy is spots, but if you aren't afraid to skim those parts it is still a good read.

The book, originally written in 1930, was updated by the author in 1976 for this Dover edition. The last two chapters discuss nuclear chemistry/physics.The last chapter seems a little out of place in the book since it focuses more on issues and less on people and the development of the discipline.Because the nucleus chapter was written before the Standard Model of Fundamental Interactions was firmly established, the discussion could be updated a bit.An interested reader can find more information online at [...].But I can't fault the book on this because the story of science is (hopefully) never over.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the finest books on the history of science
This is one of the finest books on the history of science I have ever read. Each scientist appears larger than life - even their warts and flaws are the size of mountains. This is the history of chemistry told on the large screen, technicolor, and surround sound, as heroic as any military or political history.I'll be re-reading this book 20 years from now.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not received
I have not received yet the books in question. I would like to know what happened.

Truly yours,

Guillermo Pineda

5-0 out of 5 stars still a great introduction to chemistry
Not everyone likes to jump into a field with a basic textbook. Crucibles tells the story of modern chemistry and atomic theory in the form of a series of biographical vignettes with an emphasis on chemistry. It starts with the ancients and covers a lot of ground. I found it rather fascinating as a kid, but I still think it's pretty good as an introduction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information - difficult style
I have read and reread this book several times and use it in teaching honors and AP Chemistry on the high school level, and have required my students to read it to bolster their knowledge of the history of chemistry. It is an excellent book, but the writing style is somewhat difficult for high school students, even the higher performing ones.Because of this, I have added some more recent books written in a more engaging style for my students to choose from.I would still recommend this book to those interested in the history of chemistry, but I would also recommend others as well, including PROMETHEANS IN THE LAB by McGrayne and UNCLE TUNGSTEN by Sacks. ... Product Description
Atmospheric Chemistry provides readers with a basic knowledge of the chemistry of Earth's atmosphere, and an understanding of the role that chemical transformations play in this vital part of our environment. The composition of the 'natural' atmosphere (troposphere, stratosphere and mesosphere) is described in terms of the physical and chemical cycles that govern the behaviour of the major and the many minor species present, and of the atmospheric lifetimes of those species. An extension of these ideas leads to a discussion of the impacts of Man's activities on the atmosphere, and to an understanding of some of the most important environmental issues of our time. One thread of the book explains how living organisms alter the composition and pressures in the atmosphere, modify temperatures, and change the intensity and wavelength-distribution of light arriving from the Sun. Meanwhile, the living organisms on Earth have depended on these very same environmental conditions being satisfactory for the maintenance and evolution of life. There thus appear to be two-way interactions between life and the atmosphere. Man, just one species of living organism, has developed an unfortunate ability to interfere with the feedbacks that seem to have maintained the atmosphere to be supportive of surface life for more than 3.5 billion years. This book will help chemists to understand the background to the problems that arise from such interference.

The structure of the book and the development of the subject deviate somewhat from those usually encountered. Important and recurring concepts are presented in outline first, before more detailed discussions of the atmospheric behaviour of specific chemical species. Examples of such themes are the sources and sinks of trace gases, and their budgets and lifetimes. That is, the emphasis is initially on the principles of the subject, with the finer points emerging at later points in the book, sometimes in several successive chapters. In this way, some of the core material gets repeated exposure, but in new ways and in new contexts.

The book is written at a level that makes it accessible to undergraduate chemists, and in a manner that should make it interesting to them. However, the material presented forms a solid base for those who are extending their studies to a higher level, and it will also provide non-specialists with the background to an understanding of Man's several and varied threats to the atmosphere. Well-informed citizens can then better assess measures proposed to prevent or alleviate the potential damage, and policy makers more realistically formulate the necessary controls on a sound scientific foundation.> ...
