Product Description
Cultural pluralisation - reinforced by immigration - has had major consequences for the political agenda in recent years in liberal democratic states. New types of tension have arisen - new forms of social and cultural differentiation, and new patterns of inequality. The diversity also reshapes the frame of reference for traditional policy instruments employed by modern welfare states: new issues arise that are linked to rights, legitimacy and policy measures of a general and targeted nature. This volume in the "Comparative Social Research" series addresses a number of issues related to this new diversity. Common themes are multiculturalism, power and integration, and these themes are analysed through a comparative lens. ... Read more

Product Description
Mobility is becoming a key issue in social theory, with people moving between countries on diverse grounds and in diverse ways whether as tourists, refugees, students, temporary workers, labour migrants or family members of prior migrants. In this setting characterized by flux, minorities are often marked by their alleged culture, which is then taken to account for their relative successes or failures in adapting to their host society; culture also being invoked in accounts of social problems such as crime, educational failures and oppression of women.Explicity comparative in its approach, "Paradoxes of Cultural Recognition" discusses central issues regarding multiculturalism in today's Europe, based on studies of Norway and the Netherlands. Distinguishing clearly the four social fields of the media, education, the labour market and issues relating to gender, it presents empirical case studies, which offer valuable insights into the nature of majority/minority relationships, whilst raising theoretical questions relevant for further comparisons. With clear comparisons of integration and immigration policies in Europe and engagement with the questions surrounding the need for more culturally sensitive policies, this volume will be of interest to scholars and policy makers alike. ... Product Description
International migration is affected by the increasing interdependence among countries caused by economic liberalization, income disparity among nations, accessible means of transportation, and growing demographic difference between developed and developing countries, geo-political factors. The focus of the book is immigrants’ distribution between the municipalities in Norway. This process depends on many factors, such as high wage level in some region, good chances to get a job, friends, relatives or immigrants from the same country, who live in the respective place. People might also tend to live in big cities due to higher amount of works, apartments, schools, etc. available. The purpose of the work is to examine the dependence of immigrants’ location on unemployment rate; wage premium level in the municipalities in Norway; size of labor market and the share of immigrants, who arrived in the region some time ago; the attraction of big cities in Norway. There were considered six model specifications with different number of explanatory variables and two estimation approaches: ordinary least squares method and censored regression approach. ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Sverre Sigurdsson was king of Norway from 1184 to 1202. He married Margareta Eriksdotter, the daughter of the Swedish king Eric the Saint, by whom he had the daughter Kristina Sverresdotter. Many consider him one of the most important rulers in Norwegian history. He assumed power as the leader of the rebel group, the Birkebeiners, during their struggle against King Magnus Erlingsson. After Magnus fell at the Battle of Fimreite in 1184, Sverre ruled as sole king of Norway. Differences with the Church, however, led to his excommunication in 1194. Another civil war began against the church-supported Baglers, which lasted beyond Sverre's death in 1202.The most important historical source on Sverre's life is his biography, Sverris saga, in part written while Sverre was alive. This saga is likely biased, since the foreword states that part was written under Sverre's direct sponsorship. Correspondence between the Pope and the Norwegian bishops can be used as an alternate source when it comes to church affairs. The saga and the letters mostly agree about the hard facts. ... High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Radio Nova is a non-commercially run student radio situated and broadcasting in Oslo, Norway, at FM 99,3. The radio is devoted to playing underground music, and is run by a team of volunteered journalists and technicians. The station went on-air for the first time March 16, 1982, as Norway's first non-Christian, local radio station. Today, the station broadcasts 40.5 hours a week between 22 programs. In the course of a week there is a range of different programmes; debates, programs that deal with film, the sciences, literature, music, culture and social questions. Together with the rest of Norway's student radio stations, Radio Nova introduced a shared endeavor to further the cause of independent/alternative music: a national student radio play-list. The student stations in the three biggest university towns ([Oslo], Bergen, and Trondheim) have in cooperation put together the list, but with the expectation it will be played by smaller student stations throughout the country. ...
