Product Description
The fascinating autobiographical reflections of Nobel Prize winner George Olah

How did a young man who grew up in Hungary between the two World Wars go from cleaning rubble and moving pianos at the end of World War II in the Budapest Opera House to winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry? George Olah takes us on a remarkable journey from Budapest to Cleveland to Los Angeles-with a stopover in Stockholm, of course. An innovative scientist, George Olah is truly one of a kind, whose amazing research into extremely strong acids and their new chemistry yielded what is now commonly known as superacidic "magic acid chemistry."

A Life of Magic Chemistry is an intimate look at the many journeys that George Olah has traveled-from his early research and teaching in Hungary, to his move to North America where, during his years in industry, he continued his study of the elusive cations of carbon, to his return to academia in Cleveland, and, finally, his move to Los Angeles, where he built the Loker Hydrocarbon Research Institute to find new solutions to the grave problem of the world's diminishing natural oil and gas resources and to mitigate global warming by recycling carbon dioxide into hydrocarbon fuels and products. Professor Olah invites the reader to enjoy the story of his remarkable path-marked by hard work, imagination, and never-ending quests for discovery-which eventually led to the Nobel Prize. Intertwining his research and teaching with a unique personal writing style truly makes A Life of Magic Chemistry an engaging read. His autobiography not only touches on his exhilarating life and pursuit for new chemistry but also reflects on the broader meaning of science in our perpetual search for understanding and knowledge. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
Olah's intellectual enthusiasm shines through the pages of his book. In telling his life story, he manages to also convey well his ceaseless curiosity; a never ending search for new and unexpected subtleties in chemistry.

He writes for a broad audience. No degree in chemistry required. He shows how chemistry in general, and his work in particular, has practical applications, that can impact everyday lives, like better fuel efficiency in cars, and lower pollution.

Perhaps the best hope for this book is that it can inspire students still undecided about their majors to seriously consider chemistry. ... Read more

Product Description

The story of the winners of the world's most prestigious prize, now updated to include the 2009 recipients.

The Nobel Prize is widely regarded as the most prestigious award one can receive. The Prize is administered by the Nobel Foundation, and the award ceremonies receive extensive media coverage. The awards are often politically controversial, and many winners use their acceptance speech to further favorite causes.

Along with background information, the book provides a look at the 200 most famous and most interesting Nobel winners. The profiles are arranged by prize and by year. A photo or illustration appears with each profiled Laureate. Other illustrations help to explain complex subjects in science and make it easier for the reader to appreciate the accomplishments for which the prize has been awarded.

A number of fascinating facts emerge from this lively account. For example, only 40 of the 829 Nobel Laureates have been women, among them Marie Curie, who won twice. Linus Pauling is the only person to have been awarded two Nobel Prizes in different categories, the 1954 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the 1962 Nobel Peace Prize. The youngest Laureate is Lawrence Bragg, who was 25 years old when he received the Nobel Prize in Physics with his father in 1915. The oldest is Leonid Hurwicz, who was 90 years old when he received the 2007 Economics Prize. Two Laureates have declined the Nobel Prize: Jean-Paul Sartre, and Le Duc Tho. Other famous names include Ernest Hemingway, Albert Einstein, Albert Schweitzer, James Watson and Francis Crick, Paul Krugman, Charles Kao, Elizabeth Blackburn and Barack Obama.

Nobel: A Century of Prize Winners is sure to find a readership among the millions who follow the awards each year and want to understand more about the most important prize in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Weapon of War=Peace
Starting with a comprehensive chapter about Alfred Nobel (his life and great achievements).Then the history of 'The Prize' and it's attribues (institutions / academy).

$1,000,000 = clearly none of the nobel winners dare cared about that. But that $ freed each to pursue their passion without external $ influence.After reading the various selected profiles of nobel laureates you appreciate their individual zeal and drive.

Beautifully concise presentations of the investigators and their theories, ideas, and discoveries:
Koch = tuberculosis
T.S. Eliot = poetry
Carrel = transplantation
Marquez = literary magic
Gide = the human condition
Cassin = the rights of man

Mandela - Walesa,Carter - King,Gorbachev - Gore.The list of whos who above all whos who lists.And of course the queen and king = Mother Teresa and Einstein.

Apartheid, finance, carbon 14, semiconductors, DNA, green earth.The list of nobel worthy information goes on and on.

A fantastic gift book for that hard to buy 'intellectual' friend.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Prize for All
An excellent review of the Nobel prizes and the winners.Many of the winners you will recognize, but many are unfamiliar to most of us.Detailed information is provided for a handful of the winners from each decade, but there is also a complete listing of all the winners.A great reference book, and I also found it an interesting book to just browse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why didn't anyone else ever think to write this kind of a book?
First of all, this is a Paperback-- NONE were ever issued in Hardcover.

Then, to the meat of the matter - The Italian legacy of invention, fortitude and discovery dates back to ancient Roman times. Our fearless Nobel "explorers" of the realms of science, literature, mathematics and chemistry span more than a century, and include many such stellar geniuses as Fermi, Marconi, Deledda, and of course Dr. Montalcini, who worked with dedication and love of their disciplines, for the betterment of humanity.

In the case of Rita Levi Montalcini whose father was a marked man by the Nazis in WWII (the family kept going into hiding)-- Dr Levi-Montalcini nevertheless continued constructing and working in her makeshift laboratories, continuing her research and experimentation on Nerve Growth Factor, despite all the dangers. Interestingly enough, once the war ended, Dr Levi-Montalcini became a friend and colleague of two other Italian students, both of whom also won the Nobel Prize later in theircareers -- and At the present age of 95, she is an honorary Senator in Rome, and continues with her work for the betterment of all, especially women in third world nations.

This book is great read, an inspiration to all, and hopefully we will hear more on this subject. ... Read more
