5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!Beautiful book, great layout
I gave up my personal search for a baby book because I figured I was expecting too much but I finally found everything I wanted in this book (a gift!)
The pictures are gorgeous but since the author's own note said she wouldn't be offended if one placed their own pictures overtop (cute note) I took her up on it.I've packed this book with my own photos.I was concerned that doing such in a hardbound book would make the cover kind of pop up or fail to close but I have been pleasantly surprised that that is not the case.
I like the prompting statements to help one journal special moments, memories, and milestones.
There are many two-page spreads that are blank for one to add general photos or photos that aren't specifically covered by preset pages.
This baby book has a very classy look.It is not all cutesy, nor is it too girly. In fact, it is very gender neutral using a warm palette of pastels.
I can't say enough good things about this book and will be purchasing additional copies as gifts. ... Read more

Product Description
A painting wouldnt be the same without its frame. In fact, a frame can be as important as the art it surrounds. Yet the picture frame is the Cinderella of the art world, beautiful, hardworking, and frequently overlooked. The Secret Lives of Frames, inspired by the hundred-year history of Lowy, the premier fine arts services atelier in the country, celebrates the extraordinary art and artistry of the frame. In chapters such as The Making of a Framer and a Frame, The Lure of Antique Frames, and New Designs for the New Millennium, magnificent edges of all kinds come to life in vivid detail. Their history, so colorful and varied, is interwoven with the history of Lowy, an old-world company started by the legendary New York framer Julius Lowy, that marries the finest of traditional craftsmanship with new and inventive framing, restoration, and conservation techniques. Fascinating stories about frames, a lively historical survey of their evolution, and behind-the-scenes views of Lowy will transform readers into knowledgeable insiders who understand how to make their own framing choices. The Secret Lives of Frames includes vintage photographs illustrating Lowys colorful history, reproductions of unique paintings of the Lowy workshops created by School-of-Paris artist Arbit Blatas, and extensive photographs of frames and framed works of art in splendid real-life settings. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated very informative read!
I purchased this book to better understand and appreciate frames.I was not disappointed! The book starts with a general description of what is involved in making a gesso frame. With photographs to illustrate the process, it is a wonderful tutorial on how high quality picture frames are constructed. The remainder of the book is full of great pictures of antique picture frames and how they are used to enhance the art they surround. The book is a visual feast. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book if your into it
Not many people would see this as a great book, But if your into craftsmanship or framing you can not go wrong. This was a companion book to a frame ehibition that toured museums in the U S, I saw it in Norfolk Va. and immediately got the book. As Ferris says "If you have the means I highly recomend it"

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Inspiration
As a long time furniture maker and also someone who is making frames, this book has a wealth of photographic history documenting frames from the beginnings of the art movements in Europe and is separated by the styles popularized in the different countries. As a novice carver and gilder, I can really appreciate the craftsmanship shown by the photographs. They're both inspiration and intimidation!

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book
I bought this book as a gift for my husband, whose family has been in the picture frame business for over 40 years.I really bought it for the photographs, which are truly outstanding. They illustrate the beautiful, hand-carved frames of long ago, when gold truly meant genuine gold leaf. This book is almost a history of frame-making. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great knits
I have found many patterns to make in this book - all with easy to follow instructions.I bought it after borrowing one from a friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
other than the redundant information at the beginning of the book which is the basic of knitting (redundant for me, not for a beginner) i love this book there are many patterns that i plan to make for my friends babies which will get years of wear.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Pictures, Difficult Patterns
The photography is this book is lovely. The patterns are ones I wish I could create. However, I am a long time beginner knitter (I've been knitting a long time, but I'm still no good!)and I thought that based on the reviews and the book (beginner to intermediate) I would be able to tackle this book. I have not been able to knit a single thing! I've tried, it is just more complex than my skill set at the moment. This book is not for true beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Baby: 20 Adorable Handknits for Baby's First Two Years
This knitting book has a some wonderful baby patterns for the intermediate knitter. The cabled baby blanket is especially nice and a change from the patterns one usually sees.

5-0 out of 5 stars Range of classic knits for babies
I use a lot of Debbie Bliss yarns when knitting for kids and babies: her color sense and practicality (machine washable yarns in perfect colors!) are unparalleled. This book, in particular, is useful because there is a range of design: easy to complex, plain to color-work, quick to more time-consuming.Something that I appreciate is that the photos are right with the actual patterns. The book has some quick intro material such as, how-to's, yarns that are good for babies, and swatches of stitch patterns so you can see what these stitch types look like.If you substitute in other yarns (say, Cascade or Classic Elite), you can extrapolate from the book how these other yarns might work out. And, although Debbie Bliss is an English designer (and company), this third edition's info is given in American inches and needle sizes. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars New baby knits
I am very pleased with the condition of the second hand book. I was beginning to think I would never find a copy to buy for myself, but thankfully it turned up not only quickly, but in pretty good condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bliss for grandmas
I love all the books by Debbie Bliss.Lots of patterns and Ideas. If you love her yarn you will love the books too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic knits
I was surprised to find out that this book is 15 years old. The knits are still just as cute and desirable as if they were designed yesterday. I have only knit one of the sweaters so far, but I found the instructions to be excellent. My only criticism is that you have to keep turning back to the front section to see the big color pictures. I would like to see the instructions and the photo together. Other than that, this book is a real good value.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Cute
I ordered this book for a friend of mine who was having trouble finding knitting books for toddlers in her area stores. When I opened it up and saw all of the elaborate styles I was impressed! If you're just beginning, you can cut down on the amount of colors used or not do all the embroideryand still come up with something pretty fantastic. The cutest babyall-in-ones and booties I've ever laid eyes on! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Knitting for Kids
Another great Debbie Bliss book...Some really beautiful patterns in this book...Just remember that the end results will come out lots bigger than you think...Very generous sizing...

5-0 out of 5 stars the Best Bliss Book
....and I mean it. This one is really good. Like many other knitters I have been burned by Bliss' designs often. Her designs do tend to repeat themselves from collection to collection and the pictures, while cute, never show the designs properly. Well, this collection has b&w pictures of the items next to the instructions after the color pictures which are huddled in the front of the book. (I'm talking about a hardcover copy and am assuming that the paperback is identical). The designs are charming and definitely classics. I am buying my own paperback copy and finally returning my library copy. I also recommend the book Knits for Kids by Lena Stengard. This one is a keeper

4-0 out of 5 stars Great example of knitter's "Bliss"
I just counted, I have 7 books by Debbie Bliss. That is probably why I found this book to be a bit less enchanting than I had expected it to be.

I like her books - enjoy the layout and can always understand theinstructions. However, within the body of her work, this set of designsjust seemed a little too similar to some in her other books for me to getexcited. As a stand alone book, it has charming styles.

I still give it a4 for good instructions, photography and cute styles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection of kids sweaters
Bliss designed a great variety of styles, all attractive and all, sadly, only in children's sizing (many would make truly lovely adult sweaters).Difficulty level is not high -- some are fairly simple to make and theothers are well worth the effort. Some are rugged sweaters, othersdecorative.Sweaters for boys and girls, too. The photography is nice andinstructions are clear. Really a fabulous book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for special projects!
I agree that the lack of diagrams and measurements make for some moments of head-scratching, but overall, I think it's a decent books. The designs are not your average baby sweater...there are some excellent pieces that are sure to become treasured hand-me-downs. The patterns call for premium yarns, but if you're going to go to all the trouble of making something like the frilled edge crossover sweater (my favourite), why not indulge and use ahigh quality yarn?

I doubt that I would use the book for all baby shower presents. But when there's somebody special to knit for - a friend, maybe, or a family member, or even your own child - it's nice to be able to make up something that's guaranteed not to be found in a retail store.

5-0 out of 5 stars inspirational
i found this book at the library, and after my maximum renewal time i had to go buy it myself. as a beginner+ knitter, i found many projects in here that i a) could make b) *wanted* to make and c) enjoyed making! it's nice to see children's wear that isn't frou-frou, but has interesting detailing. debbie bliss has inspired me to continue knitting (when i would have otherwise put it down for lost!) i highly suggest this book to anyone, if not for the patterns, for the beautiful photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!Don't Underestimate This One!!
I was hesitant to buy this book after reading the other review.
I'm glad I didn't, this is a wonderful book, the hangers and hot water bottle cover are wonderful, as are the other patterns in this book.
She has not lost her inspirational touch!

Happy knitting!

4-0 out of 5 stars Some duds but overall a nice collection of baby gear
Let me start with a disclaimer: I love Debbie Bliss patterns for children and babies, and feel she is one of the best young designers out there today. So I guess you could say I'm predisposed to like whatever her latest book is. "Baby Style" contains many of her trademark knitted patterns that will please her diehard fans: sweaters, booties, caps, stuffed animals. While there was some feeling of repetition from her earlier books, I felt there were enough fresh ideas to make this book worth owning. I have knit from this book and had no problem with the patterns. My criticisms: (1) there are some ridiculous patterns interspersed with the good ones, like a knitted hot water bottle cover, and coat hanger covers done in a tiny gauge. Who has the time or inclination for such pointless knittery? (2) as usual, the trendy photography doesn't give you a clear look at the finished items. Close-ups of the collar or yarn are nice, but how about including a photo that would be helpful for a knitter in gauging fit or getting an overall sense of how an item looks? (3) While measurements are given at the beginning of the patterns, there are no diagrams. I find the diagrams helpful in estimating size and substituting yarns at different gauges. (4) While I am also a big fan of Rowan and Jaeger yarns, be forewarned that using the listed yarns may put quite a dent in your knitting budget (e.g., Rowan Wool-Cotton is a gorgeous yarn, but at 8 bucks and change per skein, the price of even a kid's sweater is steep). Best to be prepared to substitute if cost is an issue.

4-0 out of 5 stars A beauiful addition to any knitting library
I think this is a great book to add to any knitter's library. There is a good selection of simple patterns and then some more complicated for people looking for color kniting or something more chalenging. There are accesories in this book that make wonderful gift ideas. The padded hanger covers are darling and if sized up would be great for hanging adult sweaters, also. So, if you look there's something for everyone as long as you're willing to re-write and alter patterns.

The only downside is there are no diagrams to show finished measurements. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Source of Some Good Info
I used this book for a 25 page paper and it was by far the best of all. Nice pictures, easy to read, and great background information about the process.

5-0 out of 5 stars A facinating part of world history
The time of Foot-binding in China is an often misunderstood period for many Westerners and even those in the Eastern countries who did not practice this crippling rite of passage. However while I was in China I did have the pleasure of visiting one of the countries eminent historians of foot-binding and saw his collection of the tiny shoes worn by the women spanning the hundreds of years of this practice. He had become impassioned with the subject upon finding one of his grandmother's tiny shoes in the garbage after a fire in her neighborhood one year.He questioned her about her history and her feelings on the subject and what he found inspired him to begin his collection and his urge to educate about the experience.

In her eyes, he found, she had felt it was torture.Pure agony for months.Needless pain put upon her by her own family which crippled her for life and bound her to dependence on others forever. On the other hand, after all that, she had a secret pride because her feet had come out so beautifully small and she was admired by so many men.It was a strange paradox. And it is true, that while the custom began with royalty, just as in western countries, the practice spread to the peasantry, but with far more punishing results. All of this finally came to an end with Mao, who for all his villainizing, absolutely forbade foot-binding ever again with a threat of nasty punishment.

I spoke with an important Chinese historian who told me that China wrought her own downfall with the binding of the woman's feet.He showed me the growth of Chinese culture to what was considered it's peak and then pointed out that once China bound 50% of it's population it began a very steady downward slide until the 20th Century where she has tried to lift herself up again even if it has been a rough journey. He wondered why some parts of the world today do not take a lesson from that."How can the world move on," He asked, "When there are so many places where the man and the woman are not in partnership?"

1-0 out of 5 stars grossly innacurate
The only recommendation I can give this book are for the photographs and art design, which make this rather a seductive book, but anyone who is informed about chinese culture sees the many flaws in text . This is really just a reworking of Howard Levy's book on footbinding, with glossy photos. If you would like an accurate bookrelating the history and culture of footbinding get one of Dorothy Ko's books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Interesting and Educational
For anyone interested in Chinese cultural history, women,s studies and art will enjoy the pictures and text which explore the (to Western minds) the strange custom of foot binding.Learn how it began and what the appeal was and see shoes that are stunning works of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Splendid Slippers
This book was absolutely wonderful. Before reading this book my knowledge of the ancient tradition of footbinding was very limited. In fact, what I thought I knew about the subject was woefully wrong. The pictures along with the literature were truly educational and now I feel I have a good understanding of the subject.I also bought a book (novel) called Snowflower and The Secret Fan.This novel was an excellent book that complimented the Splendid Slipper book. Thanks for recommending it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous silk embroideries using natural themes
2009 is the 28th anniversary of the year that Helen M. Stevens gave up her 'day job' and devoted her life to the art of silk embroidery. This book explores a year of this artist's life via gorgeous silk paintings, most of them taken from nature, although one particularly striking design was copied from a Viking gravestone: it features an eight-legged stallion with its phallus tied in a knot (embroidery at the level to which this author takes it, is not for sissies or dilettantes).

Stevens reminds me of my favorite watercolorist, Charles Burchfield in her use of natural themes that are suffused with inner light. Her silken oak leaves, squirrels and spiderwebs conjure up visions of the seasons.Snowdrops and winter aconites emerge during a January thaw, clear quartz crystals scattered like ice under their leaves.A mouse examines February violets, and Brimstone butterflies flutter near a daffodil.

When speaking of the daffodil, the artist states:"as with all floral embroidery, finding the `core' or `growing point' of the bloom is all important in creating a successful interpretation."

If you look closely at her flowers, butterflies, and creatures you can see the core of each, spun with different shades of silk as a musician spins variations of sound from an original theme.

This book also includes entire landscapes as well as small vignettes from each month of the year. The accompanying text discusses embroidery techniques, as well as the symbolism of the creatures that she chose to represent the seasons of an English year.September, for instance "is the time when Herne the Hunter appears to the unwary lost in autumnal woodland" and can be symbolized by a stag.October features a dormousesleeping in a nest of oak leaves, "with a touch of metallic gold and silver [to suggest] the frosts to come."

This author has a website at helenmstevens.co.uk where you can view more samples of her work, and buy embroidery supplies or sign up for classes.

"Embroiderer's Year" will join the art books on our shelves, rather than mingle with the craft volumes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helen M. Stevens' Embroiderer's Year
This book is fabulous! The pictures of her work is absolutely exquisite! Her discussion of how to observe nature as it truly is and how to achieve an accurate "picture" is great. I love the book!

3-0 out of 5 stars tantalised but soo frustrated
I was so loving this book until I realised it is basically a gallery of her work and with not a pattern in sight. Well worth drooling over but not a 'how to' book unless you want to use a magnifying glass on each photo to work out how each is stitched and no projects to complete yourself. Will keep it for the facinating artwork.

5-0 out of 5 stars Embroiderers Year
A BEAUTIFUL book.If you like Helen Stevens' work, you will love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real worth of your collections
I am always fascinated with Helen's works. This one particular. I should say her technique is not that complicated and subtle compared to Chinese SuZhou embroidery's. But her ways of interpreting country creatures like flowers, plants, birds, animals are so vivid that they seem to come to life. Her stitches are just like impressionists' stroke, which capture the every essential piece of natural beauty. I love her landscape works especially. I regret not seeing so many landscape works in this book, but her two works of the same scene in late spring and early winter already ensnare my heart and I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves embroidery and nature. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Written Instructions !!!!!
I agree with those reviewers that say the book is delightful; the patterns are classic; and many designs are creative (booties). The one thing that has driven me nuts with this book is how poorly the instructions are given. I have struggled with the Embroidered Baby Shoes on pg. 116 (adorable!)and can't seem to make the pattern work as it is written. I took it to my local yarn shop and 3 very experienced knitters attempted to desipher the intructions with no success. Instead of beautiful photographs that sell the book, the knitter would be better served with more detailed instructions and drawings.

3-0 out of 5 stars Caution: Yarn discontinued!
I agree with most of the reviews. Most of the designs are recycled or little changed from other books.I haven't run into any errors in the kimono pattern which I am currently knitting, but on the debbie bliss website they list several errors from this book.A very important note: the major yarn used in this book Debbie Bliss wool/cotton has been discontinued.Because Debbie Bliss discourages people from susbstituting yarns, she does not give help finding an alternate. It is a hard yarn to match, especially in the colors she uses.

3-0 out of 5 stars Check pattern first
I consider myself a fairly skilled knitter, but the patterns I have done so far have their limits.First, the photos don't show much--though they are dang cute kids.Second, the patterns have (rare) charts, and are usually only written instructions.Couple that with many errors in the patterns, and it is difficult at times.Because you have no picture to go by with some of the design details, if the directions are not clear, you have to wing it or give up.Her web site does list error corrections, which helps, but should I have to do that? These are, in the words of Elizabeth Zimmerman, "blind follower" directions, that tell you down to every stitch what to do.It is not much for that rhythmic, meditative knitting--but it has its own appeal, and I come back to her instructions often. The trade-up for these inconvienences are stylish, extremely well -tailored knits. These finished sweaters are the ones that I use most for my own children. Her yarn is very nice and wears well. She only gives gauge over stockinette stitch, not over pattern, a confusing point another reviewer noted--the cable and moss stitch sweater is appropriate to size, because the cables eat up the extra width.I would recommend this book, but with the reservation that you need to spend some time plotting out the knit beforehand, and you need to buy her yarn to get the best end result.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for knitting baby sweaters!
Well use of yarn (Debbie Bliss) to make the final sweater look high quality and attractive on the babies in the photos.
One small weakness -Hard for reader to see the complete sweater pattern without a drawing of the front and back of the sweater pattern in the book. Phots not showing all areas of the sweater.
Other than that, sweaters look great and not hard to knit!

4-0 out of 5 stars A variety of classic-looking projects
I really admire that this book doesn't try to cram in a "how to knit" chapter in the very beginning. Those hurried instructions never do justice to someone who's never knitted. Therefore, don't buy this book hoping that it will contain a chapter teaching you how to knit, because it doesn't.After two pages devoted to general knitting considerations, the patterns begin.Unlike Debbie Bliss's "Quick baby knits", which features mainly long-sleeved sweaters, this book has a variety of projects including hats, a scarf, blankets, a vest, sweaters (of course), pants, booties, a stuffed toy, three little dresses, and a little bag.Patterns look simple, classic, elegant, not too gaudy, and the skills used include cables, Fair Isle, beads, stripes, and embroidery. My impression of the projects is that they are for an intermediate knitter.Items presented are for newborn-3 year olds, and most can be used for either boys or girls. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very informative book
I received this book very quickly and it was in very good/newcondition.It gave me a lot of helpful info on glass I had collected years ago and now want to sell.Over the years I forgot thenames of patterns etc. This helped a lot.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Organization
I have to agree with some of the other reviews. While the photos are crisp and clear, the book is not organized well and not enough manufacturer information is given. It is difficult to quickly find an item when you are trying to reference something. All in all, it is somewhat useful, but it is NOT my "go to" guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kitchen Glassware (Kitchen Glassware of the Depression Years)
Excellent book as always from the Florence's. This book makes it easy to identify and accurately price kitchen items for the Novice collector to the Professional. As always, this book is full of pictures of the items to make the avid collector drool over. Another excellent reference book to add to the collection. Also a great jumping off point for those just getting into Kitchen glass.
