An insatiable, unstoppable beast, the wildfire called Jackknife has already devoured 17,000 acres of California's Lassen Volcanic National Park. A devastating force of nature, it has brought out the very best -- and worst -- in those sworn to defeat it.

Ranger Anna Pigeon is among the exhausted firefighters, serving as medic and spike camp security, when an abrupt weather shift sends Jackknife racing relentlessly in their direction. And when the monstrous blaze has passed, Anna emerges from her protective shelter to discover two men are dead: one a victim of the hungry flames, the other stabbed through the heart. Now, trapped in a nightmarish landscape of snow and ash, cut off from rescue by a rampaging winter storm, Anna must investigate an inexplicable homicide -- as she and nine others struggle to survive the terrible rage if nature. . . and the murderer in their midst.Amazon.com Review

5-0 out of 5 stars A good read
I enjoyed reading Firestorm by Nevada Barr. In keeping with other Barr novels, it gives the reader information about the locale and the work (in this case, of firefighters). Plus, Anna Pigeon is an intriguing character, and there are some surprises.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mount Lassen?
I'm a fan of the Anna Pigeon series, in part because of the settings. Firestorm was the first of Barr's books set in a park I'm familiar with - I climbed Mt. Lassen when I was 12 and, although I live in WV now, I revisited the park as recently as 2008. I would have been there last summer (09) except that a forest fire (sound familiar?) diverted me away from the park entrance.

That being said, you can understand why I was looking forward to Firestorm. Unfortunately, the story didn't take advantage of the setting; in fact, the connection between the story and Lassen NP was minimal. Yes, a hot spring is part of the plot, but the various thermal features aren't what set Lassen apart. To tell the truth, the story - exactly as it was written - could be shifted to Yellowstone without only minimal editorial adjustments. So I was disappointed, but not so much that I've abandoned Anna Pigeon. In fact, I just started reading Endangered Spicies tonight.

5-0 out of 5 stars great read
Firestorm is a great mystery. If you like the other Anna Pigeon novels, you'll like this one. It's a typical Barr novel with lots of detail and humor mixed in. Anna is working as an EMT on a wildfire. When they the fire unexpectedly goes wild, Anna and her group are caught out with just their emergency shelters. When the fire passes, one of the group is found knifed in the back. Anna must assume any of the survivors is the murderer. During the wait for rescue, she tries to figure out who it was without getting killed herself. Very entertaining and a good study of human behavior under stress.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good except for the fatist remarks
I find the Anna Pigeon series to be an enjoyable read.I just wish Nevada Barr would let go of her fatist attitudes. It is disappointing that an author who espouses acceptance of people's differences, whether that be homosexuality, gender identity, recreational drug use, nudity, marriage, politics, and education...everything except weight. It is quite unpleasant to be reading a mystery novel and suddenly find the author injecting their bias against a person's weight.Invariably these are characters that have only brief roles in the story--an anonymous park visitor, usually.Mentioning their weight adds nothing to the story. And it only serves to highlight that the main character, Anna Pigeon, seems to associate only with thin people. This is not an admirable quality in either a main character or in an author.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Audiobook
I can't tell you whether or not this was a page turner, seeing as I've only heard the book read to me by Barbara Rosenblat.I can tell you that the audiobook is great.Rosenblat's voice captures the essence of the character very nicely.

I'll admit this isn't the most interesting of the Anna Pigeon stories I've heard, but it was still decent.I think I might have liked it less if reading b/c there are a LOT of descriptions to wade through. What that means for the story is a less than intricate plot.Still, if you like the Anna Pigeon series as a whole, you will probably enjoy this installment. If you're a newcomer who's disappointed by this story, try another Anna P story... there are some others with more intriguing plotlines and faster action. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars sickening story
I usually enjoy Nevada Barr books, even though the stories about life in the federal government service is totally fiction, nothing like real life in the service. The fiction is enjoyable. But this book is just disgusting. It is bad enough we see this crap on tv, but to spend all your energy writing and reading this trash is a waste I want my time and money back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent first novel
BITTERSWEET was Nevada Barr's first novel, a lesbian romance. I was amazed at how well her characters were developed and how satisfying the story was. Way above most lesbian fiction in quality. Too bad she decided not to write any more books in this genre.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nevada Barr's first novel, of forbidden love and western intrigue
Same-sex attraction has been with humans for thousands of years, and societies have tolerated it, embraced it, and condemned it.In the 1900s, disregard of "God's order" had severe repercussions for individuals not fitting the Puritan's "two genders" model.

Nevada Barr developed the story of a school teacher, Imogen, who is expelled from her school and her community in Philadelphia for demonstrating affection to a young woman. The social ostracism is so intense that it results in abandoning home and friends.Imogen moves west, but her past catches up to her, and she is expelled once again. This time, she leaves with Sarah, a young woman with an abusive husband, who was falsely accused of immoral activities with Imogen, and forced to abandon her newborn son.

Imogene and Sarah move to the far West, to wild Nevada, and finally settle in as innkeepers of a stage stop.Their relationship blossoms, but Nevada is a man's world, and their secrets must remain hidden.

Nevada Barr has attempted to make this novel historically accurate.Life is hard. The streets are dirty.Men, not women, can sign contracts. And independent women have to find a way to make a living.

As a fan of Barr's Anna Pigeon series, I picked up Bittersweet thinking that it would have a similar flavor. It is a very different book.It was her first book (1984), and it is not as polished as her later contributions. But the premise of the tale is intriguing. The "closet" back then was dark and deep, and life for the outed person must have been incredibly difficult.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Condition, Shipped Quickly
Very pleased with transaction. The book's pages were yellowed with age, as to be expected, but the condition was still very good.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bitter and Sweet are Matters of Tastes
Let's cut to the chase:"Bittersweet" is a lesbian love story. It begins in Philadelphia in 1874, but the couple, a 6' school teacher, Imogen and her former artistic student, Sarah, soon move to Nevada.

You'll see no summaries of the plot, because there is no simple plot.Rather the novel is more a depressing epic of struggle. As another reader suggested, be sure you've had your Prosac today before picking it up.

I'm a crusty 60 year old guy, who prefers escapist literature--real life is depressing enough.I don't enjoy depressing epics, least of all love stories, and cannot relate to lesbian love stories. So this book isn't for me, and I gave up part way.The great strength of Nevada Barr's other works is her ability to appeal to male readers.I guestimate this book as a 1 for heterosexual male readers, a 4 for heterosexual female readers, and a 5 for lesbian readers, working out to 2 or 3 for "average" readers---which only points out how absurd the concept of "average" is in many cases. ... Product Description
Oral history is all about talking, and that's just what students at Wasden Elementary School in Las Vegas, Nevada, did to prepare for a celebration of the 50th anniversary of their school. During interviews with former staff and students, kids collected stories reflecting changes at the school from 1953 until now. With assistance from Teacher and Writer Beth Miller, the students created questions, conducted interviews and wrote summaries that share what they learned.Let's Talk History is a document based on memories, a priceless peak into the past that connected kids with grownups who were kind enough to return to their former school to share stories.
