Studies have shown that students participating in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs do better on standardized tests, attend school regularly, and cause less discipline concerns. The United States Department of Agriculture says, All children need a nutritious breakfast and lunch. The School Breakfast and Lunch Programs offers all children regardless of their economic status a critical jump-start to each day of learning. The State of Minnesota Breakfast Study in 1997 found that students who ate breakfast had a general increase in math grades and resulting scores, increased student attention, reduced nurse visits, and improved student behavior. Each meal is designed to provide adequate calories, nutrients and dietary fiber while reducing or limiting saturated fat and cholesterol. Each breakfast provides 1/4 of the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for key nutrients. Each lunch provides 1/3 of the RDA for key nutrients. Key nutrients included in the breakfast and lunch are: protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, calcium, and iron. No more than 30 percent of the calories are from fat.
