Extractions: American Geography MAP T he area known generally as the Southwest is one of the most widely recognized yet one of the most transitionary regions of America ( Map 12 : 14K). It has an apparent physical uniformity that can be attributed primarily to its clear, dry climate, but, in fact, the region includes the broad flatlands of the lower Rio Grande Valley; the plateaus of New Mexico; the dramatic mesas, buttes, and deserts of Arizona; and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico. The Southwest is made distinctive by the coexistence of Spanish-American, American Indian, and Anglo cultures, and the physical environment is almost like a stage that serves to emphasize aspects of each. The American Indian and Spanish populations coexisted in much of the region for 250 years after Spanish arrival at the end of the 16th century before Anglos began immigrating in the middle of the 19th century. The canyonlands of northern Arizona and southern Utah provided an effective barrier to Spanish expansion northward from Mexico. The Spanish moved up the Rio Grande to the broad expanse of the Rocky Mountains, north of which little Hispanic settlement developed. In Texas, most settlement remained concentrated along the Rio Grande and Nueces Rivers. The extensive cattle-grazing industry that the Spanish introduced into south Texas was ill-suited to the moist, forested lands of the eastern portion of the state. That area, left as a frontier, was largely unsettled by the Spaniards. Most migration by Spanish-Americans beyond this original settlement area has been to urban places.

Dr. Conroy was appointed president in June 1997, after serving for 12 years as executive vice president, the universitys chief academic officer, and one year as interim president, 1994-95. Since coming to NMSU in 1985, Dr. Conroy has been instrumental in the universitys growth and development in many areas. Extractions: El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (The Royal Road Inland) is a historic trail that has had a significant role in the settlement and shaping of both the United States and Mexico.This trail extended from Mexico City northward through Zacatecas, Durango, Chihuahua, and on to El Paso del Norte where it continued along the Rio Grande Valley to Santa Fe in the Provincia de Nuevo Mexico. El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro was approximately 1,800 miles long and existed long before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, from the late 1500s to the 1880s. The Spanish explorers and colonists shared the trail with North American Indians, who had used it as a trade route long before their arrival. During the 17th and 18th centuries, one of the primary functions of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro was to supply the Spanish missions along the route. With the founding of Albuquerque and Chihuahua City in 1706 and 1709 respectively, the trail became more of a trade and supply route between these cities. After the independence of Mexico in 1821 and with the westward expansion of Americans, El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro and the Santa Fe Trail were the major trade and commerce links from Missouri to Chihuahua City and on to Mexico City. El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro continued as a major trade route after the Mexican American War (1846-1848) until the 1880s when the railroad was built from Santa Fe to El Paso and on to Chihuahua City, Mexico.

The university is a land-grant, minority-serving institution, located on a 6,250-acre campus, whose mission is to benefit society through education, research and public service. Of the 15,000 on-campus students, about 700 students from 81 countries are currently enrolled. Some 25 percent of the students live on campus.
