Excerpt: The V-3 (Vergeltungswaffe 3), also known as the Hochdruckpumpe ("High Pressure Pump", HDP for short; this was a code name used to hide the real purpose of the project) and Fleissiges Lieschen ("Busy Lizzie"), was a German World War II supergun working on the multi-charge principle whereby secondary charges are detonated to add velocity to a projectile. The weapon was planned to be used to bombard London from two large bunkers in the Pas-de-Calais region of northern France, which were rendered unusable by Allied bombing raids before completion. Two similar guns were used to bombard the city of Luxembourg from December 1944 to February 1945. The basic construction was later taken up in the U.S. by developments like the Project HARP in the 1960s. The gun used multiple propelling charges placed along the barrel's length and timed to fire as soon as the projectile passed them by, to provide an additional boost. Due to their higher suitability and ease of use, solid-fuel rocket boosters were used instead of explosive charges. These were arranged in symmetrical pairs along the length of the barrel, angled to project their thrust against the base of the projectile after it passed. Product Description
There are 200 military museums in Britain, and this book examines the nature and origins of these museums, how and why they developed and changed during the period 1660 to 1900. The author discusses the inherent problems in portraying warfare; the social history of the serviceman, his family and camp followers; the relationships between the armed forces and civilian populations; and the role of museum archives and questions of educational provision. Throughout the text, the author draws on recent theoretical studies of the nature of collecting. The recent dramatic rise is "revisionist" history has affected the debate about the role of museums in the depiction and interpretation of history. This book offers an overview of the controversies and issues involved in this debate. ... Read more

Product Description
All of the Roman military equipment featured in this catalogue was found in Wales, reflecting the region's domination by both soldiers and forts for approximately 350 years. Many objects are catalogued and illustrated here, followed by a gazetteer which provides background information on the sites where the objects were found. Organised by type, the catalogue features, for example, swords, scabbards, spears, pilae, bows, arrows, bolt-heads, body armour (including large amounts of lorica segmentata), helmet fragments, shields, belt fittings, hose harness, pendants and fasteners. Many of the finds were discovered at Caerleon and Usk. Each section on different object types begins with a brief discussion. The objects are illustrated with back and white photographs. ... Product Description
On October 26, 1862, Col. Edward P. Connor and the 3rd California Volunteers set up Camp Douglas for the purpose of protecting the overland mail and telegraph routes between Nevada and Wyoming. This began a long history of a U.S. military presence in the Salt Lake Valley Mormon community. Although the camp closed on October 26, 1991, the U.S. military still has a presence today on the east bench of Salt Lake City known as Fort Douglas. The base as it was during its heyday of the 38th Infantry is gone, but the parade ground and Gothic sandstone homes of Officers Circle, shaded by trees planted long ago, still remain at Fort Douglas. The horses have disappeared and the "old soldiers have faded away," but the stable and red-brick barracks also remain. A few old-timers still enjoy a stroll around the parade ground, listening for the canyon breeze ruffling through the trees that echo faintly the calls of yesteryear. ... Read more

Product Description
The Victoria and George Crosses are the highest military and civil decorations of the United Kingdom, awarded for gallantry. The Victoria Cross, introduced in 1856, is awarded to members of the armed forces of various Commonwealth countries for valour in the face of the enemy, while the George Cross was introduced during World War II so that civilians could also be awarded for acts of heroism, or conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger. There have been 1,356 Victoria Crosses awarded, and there have been 404 recipients of the George Cross since 1940.

The Imperial War Museum is opening the Lord Ashcroft Gallery in November 2010 to showcase not only their large collection of Victoria and George crosses, but also Lord Ashcroft's collection, which he has loaned to the Museum for 10 years. The gallery will therefore contain the largest collection of VCs and GCs in the world. The museum envisages around 150,000 visitors a year.

This fully illustrated book contains the stories of over 80 recipients: a mixture of individuals - including men, women and children from different countries - who performed their acts of heroism across the last century and a half. ... Read more
