Must Read
One of the best comics i have read. It sticks to a black and white format, otherwise the read is great, so is the art. I wish it was in hardcover tho.

Brilliance
If revolutionary politics and comics are your cup or tea then this is THE book to own, very inspiring. Very seminal piece of work though my formative and adolescent years,and still a beechen of inspiration to this day.

I actually was talking with rick about another book, when he told me to try this one. So I did. I bought it off this very same Website. It's worth the money. A Princess of Mars rocks.I just stumble arcoss this book a few weeks ago, and dude I'm still tripping.John Carter our hero hails from Virginia, he is a southern gentleman, fought for the Confederate Army, and tolerates no cowardice or fear from himself.John Carter is straight up a mans man.He looks those vile green men of Mars straight in the eye everytime and when the dust settles he stands over their dead excusses of life one foot on their neck, sword in hand, naked except for the metal of those he wears after he frees their violent souls to their fathers of old.He does this because every drop of Virginian blood would allow no less then his own death for his Red Queen, the envy, the heart of every Martian man.From the start of this book to the end John Carter runs wild and takes over Mars.Nothing stands in his way.Not the white ape-men, the 10-16 foot green martians, or the wars between the red men of Mars.John Carter even tames the vicious, destructive beast of Mars.What he does not tame or befriend he leaves dead in his path.This book is true pulp fiction to the max.But it is one hell of a fun ride.There are some hoky things in the story, it is far from being perfect.However if you like Dirty Harry, Rambo, John McClane, Jason Bourne and James Bond then you will like this book.John Carter like the other guys I just listed always win.Hokey or not it is what it is.Fun, fast paced, and groovy.Old time sci-fi that is better than most new fiction out there today.As old as these stories are they were a breath of fresh air.At least thats my opinion.I have nothing bad to say about this book and I don't want to give to much away.You have to read this book to find out just how wonderful it is.

Greatest book since I read the Tarzan novels
Aside from Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan novels no other book has captured my imagination like John Carter has.I'm not much of a book reader and loved all of the Tarzan novels and have every one of them in origianl print and since I have read A princess of Mars I am looking forward to purchasing the whole Barsoom series and cannot wait to read them all.

Timeless and imaginative
My father got me this book when I was 13 and 23years later I passed it on to my son. My goal is to own the whole series in hardback. I cannot believe this has yet to be turned into a script and made into a movie. There is a wonderful following and I recommend you search the web for it. The first three books in the series are posted as public domain there so you have the opportunity to read it there if you wish. If you consider how long ago this was written it is even more impressive. I love this book, this series, and this Author. I promise you will too.

So much better than I expected it to be!
I don't know why I always expect less of ERB when I pick up a new book by them.Yes, they all seem to have very similar elements--action, romance, strange new worlds, extreme heroism, etc. But somehow each book is an adventure worth reading on its own merits.

I'm glad I decided to not read this series until I owned all of the books (its been a few years of trekking through used and new bookstores to acquire them all).So far I've read the first two, but I have my bookmark ready for the third.The first two are their own adventures and end in a way that is both satisfying for the story of the book but clearly sets up more to come.

In this book John Carter is introduced to us, he is a cowboy and prospector attempting to make his fortune after being on the loosing side of the Civil War. He also has the interesting qualities of being immortal, not remembering any childhood and yet still being associated with a Southern family as a distant cousin, for many generations.

He is chased into a cave by a band of Indians and very near death he looks upon the planet Mars.He awakens to find himself on Mars and confronted by four armed green men.Eventually he also meets the red men and masters the language and culture of the planet he now calls home.He also manages to come across an enslaved Princess of Helium, Dejah Thoris.

Its a great book, told from John Carter's point of view.Because of this you get a little better feel for him as a person than you do for Tarzan I'd say (and I love Tarzan, but there is something very appealing about John Carter).

This is a book that will start one off on what looks to me to be a great series, but don't just get book one--get at least the first three because you will want to know what happens next. I do. ... Read more

One of the best novels of XXth century Spanish literature!
This novel is definitely one of the best literature works from Spain that I have ever read.The language that Esther Tusquets uses in this masterpiece is deeply emotional and profound.Throught the use of this language she enables the reader to penetrate the mind and soul of this female narrator whose name is never spelled out in the entire novel.A painful tragedy, El mismo mar de todos los veranos explores female subjectivity in an unprecedented way by showing how women's condition is still very much limited in the real world.After love, tenderness, hope, illusion, happiness and success in the traditional roles assigned to women (mother, daughter, lover, wife) have failed, the narrator is only left with words, language, imagery, symbolism, and stories from her past.Esther Tusquets also makes a critical representation of marriage, family, heterosexuality, which in the end leave a sense of emptiness and unsatisfaction in the life of this female narrator.Showing how female subjectivity and homosexuality (particularly lesbianism in this case) can only take form and unwind in isolation and hiding from the rest of the world, El mismo mar de todos los veranos takes the reader into this interanl journey where present and past will mingle and coexist in complete isolation.What I personally love about this novel is that it shows our fragile and insignificant condition as human beings; when everything else has failed, when our dreams and illusions have never come true, when we loose the love of our life, and when nothing has ever been what we expected or even what we thought it should have been like, we are only left with a painful and regretful past which is the only thing that seems alive - as the narrator says it in the novel -, language, words, imagery, memories, and the stories that will hunt us forever.

Podkayne of Mars
I find it great that you can order out-of-print books via Amazon,
and that it helps small book selling companies that have used books in
their inventory to sell them. I bought this one as a Xmas gift for my
niece, as I remember reading a little bit of Heinlein at just a few
years older than her.(Heinlein did mean it as a story for older
children (inbetweeners/teens) to read).

Complex Juvenile
Although some are now claiming that this is not a juvenile novel, it is.I read it when it was new and have reread it many times.Younger readers tend to misinterpret portions as the connotations of some words has changed as have idioms.Certainly, it has some adult overtones --it was written for teens, not toddlers.It is also the first of Heinlein's transition works into adult fiction. Podkayne of Mars is filled withimages of Heinlein's fears of the moral decline of human civilization.The reader will be clubbed over the head with some of them, but there are more subtle ones that don't register until some time has passed.I get more out of it each time I read this wonderful novel.It is not Heinlein's best work, but it is still excellent.Just remember that the meaning of words shifts with time and go with the story as it was intended.

Not one of RAH better books
This book, first published in 1963, has not matured very well. The account of a feisty young lady on an exciting space adventure lumbers along at a glacial pace.

Written as a series of diary entries this book is stuffed full of "off the shelf" characters: Tom the paternalistic uncle with a mysterious past on a hush-hush diplomatic mission, Clarke the troublesome brother with the high IQ always into some tomfoolery, the over achiever mother and her doddering husband, the maids who are in reality spies and on and on. No spoilers here but the plot and its resolution is as flat as two-day-old soda in an open can. One item that disturbed me was the introduction of an exciting concept or idea just to see it dropped and forgotten for the rest of the novel. For example we are informed that Mars, where Podkayne was born and raised had native Martians, now we switch to another topic...forget about the Martians.

Still, there is considerable Heinlein magic scattered throughout the story. I particularly like his short digressions from the predictable plot to have a character speak a few words of Heinlein's philosophy.Uncle Tom tell us that politics, the concept of give and take and comprise, which to many seem to be selling out or betrayal of ideals, is infinitely more preferable to it's alternative: war.

I recently read Heinlein's novel Friday I could imagine that Podkayne Fries as Friday all grown up. OK, she became a spy and not the pilot of a star ship, a minor point I will concede.
For the legion of Heinlein fan by all means read this book. If you are new to Heinlein there are many other titles I would recommend before this one: Farnham's Freehold, Glory Road and Sixth Column just to name a few that I have admired over the years.

Voyage to Venus
Podkayne of Mars (1963) is the fourteenth SF novels in the Juvenile series, following Starship Troopers.It is set in a future after the Moon, Mars and Venus have been settled.Mars was an autonomous planet, but Venus was still run by the Company.The outer moons were settled, but had little political influence.

Earth had eight billion humans living on it.It was the economic and political powerhouse of the Solar System, but its huge gravity well made trade less profitable with the other planets.Even Luna had less trade with Earth than with other interplanetary ports of call.

In this novel, Podkayne Fries is an eight Martian years old (that would be about fifteen in standard years) female resident of Mars.Poddy was named for a Martian saint by her historian father.Her mother is a Master Civil Engineer -- surface or space -- famed for reconstructing Deimos.

Clark Fries is Poddy's six Martian years old brother, who has an IQ of 160 and the morals of a pirate.Clark is a handful in more than one way.For example, Clark gimmicked the delivery robot to deliver some vile tasting combinations and the company offered him a goodly sum to tell them how he had gotten around the tamperproof seal;Clark denied all responsibility for the incidents.

Tom Fries is Poddy's great-uncle.He is a veteran of the Martian revolution and a Senator-at-Large of the Martian Republic.He spends most of his time at the Elks Club playing pinochle.

In this story, the Fries family has plans to travel to Earth.But then the Marsopolis Creche makes a mistake and suddenly the Fries family has three more children, who are only a month old.Their plans have to be postponed in this family emergency.

Poddy takes her problem to Uncle Tom and he arranges a conference with the director of the creche.The creche agrees to fund a trip to Earth for Poddy, Clark and Uncle Tom.Best of all, the Tricorn is going to Earth via Venus, so Poddy gets a tour of the Triple Planets.

During outprocessing on Deimos, Clark makes a smart remark about two kilos of happy dust just as the inspector is opening Poddy's bag.Clark gets a full body search while Poddy and Uncle Tom are finishing their outprocessing and boarding the ship.For some reasons, Poddy's total mass is three kilos over the limit, but the ship is enough under mass that the clerk clears them to board.

Naturally, Poddy eventually figures out that Clark was smuggling something aboard the ship.He admits to smuggling, but refuses to tell her what it is.Poddy knows better than to pursue the issue any further.

On the Tricorn, Poddy meets some interesting people, including Girdie and Mrs. Grew.Before Poddy came onboard, Girdie had been the center of male attraction, but she befriends Poddy and even gives her some advice that her mother never mentioned.Mrs. Grew seem to be a very jolly person and Poddy enjoys her company.

Other passengers are not so friendly.Mrs. Royer acts nice at first, but takes up too much of Poddy's time for errands and other minor tasks.She turns vicious when Poddy finally rufuses to do a minor request and goes off to an appointment with the Second Officer in the Control Room.Poddy later overhears her making cutting remarks to Mrs. Garcia against the Fries family and tells Clark about the comments.Mrs. Royer soon finds her face turning bright red and Mrs. Garcia has a bright yellow face.

On Venus, Uncle Tom is courted by the Chairman of the Venus Company, which essentially owns the planet.He invites the Fries party to stay at his official residence -- the "cottage" -- but Uncle Tom chooses to take rooms at the rather smaller Tannhauser hotel.Then Poddy is detained within the hotel while she finishes the course of treatments required to wander outside.

This tale has Poddy meeting Dexter, the son of the chairman of the Company.They have several small adventures together while Clark is winning a fortune in the casino.Then Clark disappears and the Company Police cannot find him.

This story was not in the original Juvenile series published by Charles Scribner's Sons.It was published by Putnam, but they required certain small changes in the ending.The first Baen printing presented both the originally submitted version and the originally published version of the conclusion.

IMO, the modified version published by Putnam is the better of the two.I know, Heinlein can do no wrong!But sometimes the editor is far enough from the creative ambiance to see outside the box.

Heinlein had several arguments with his editors, which is why the original Juvenile series was terminated.He also had many arguments over the script for Destination Moon.So he might have been somewhat sensitive to editorial changes.

But this time he accepted the change and let the book be published with a different ending.Maybe he had matured to the point of being able to accept other viewpoints.Read and enjoy!

Highly recommended for Heinlein fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of interplanetary travel, interpersonal relationships, and great female heroines.

It's very dated, but I don't care a bit.
The copy of Podkayne of Mars that I picked up from the used bookstore is an original copy from the 1960s. The back cover says, "The NOW Generation's favorite novelist has written a novel with which it can identify! Embodying Heinlein's challenging new concepts or morality and social organization in the framework of whimsical -- and terrifying -- adventure on alien planets."

It's been a long time since I thought of myself as being part of the NOW Generation.

This is a borderline "Young Adult" novel that tackles some adult topics. Podcayne is about 15 years old when she and her brilliant younger brother accompany their uncle on a leisure cruise liner to Earth, with a stop at Venus on the way. Or, at least, that's the plan. It all starts when her brother apparently smuggles something on board...

"Factually" speaking, Poddy's story doesn't age well. It's part of Heinlein's Future Universe, in which Mars had native life, Venus was settled by indentured servants, and everyone's eyes were pointed at the stars. So you can't read this expecting that the science holds up.

Yet this novel (which I initially read at the library 25 years ago) has some of my favorite Heinlein moments. First, Poddy is a pretty cool character: bright and articulate with intense ambitions (becoming a spaceship pilot, which is not considered a "girl" career). The story is fun, because her diary shows what Heinlein imagined space travel might be like.

And although Heinlein does indulge in his political lecture-mode (which I know grates on some people), it's not as overwhelming as in later books. Maybe it's because I've always loved this passage, in which Poddy has just bitterly blamed a situation on politics, in her uncle's hearing. He responds: "Politics is not evil; politics is the human race's most magnificent achievement. ... Politics is just a name for the way we get things done without fighting."

Dated? Sure. But I can still curl up with this book and happily disappear into Heinlein's alternate universe. It's very definitely recommended. ... Read more

From Fantasy to Delusion
This book comes from a lost time period, a time when it was not off-limits for serious minded people to investigate the paranormal. This book is a very good effort to investigate the claims of one deluded woman and her apparent spirit guide, Leopold.

In France, thanks to Allen Kardec, spiritualists believed in reincarnation. However, as is the case with believers in reincarnation, the "past lives" of the woman going by the name of Helene Smith, were somewhat exotic, perhaps reflecting the egotistical nature of the believers in this philosophy.

The great merit of this book is that it focuses on one case only, and under repeated questioning the Leopold character/alter-ego starts breaking down. Leopold says on one occasion that his name was an arbitrary pseudonym, on another he says it was the name of one of his friends. Despite being the supposedly legendary Cagliostro, Leopold was unable to communicate in Italian, and made the excuse that as Helene had heard the language all around her, Flournoy would say that Helene would have fabricated the language through having heard it around her.

One previous lifetime sees Helene as an Arabian princess. She presents scenes of her father the sheik, tents gleaming in the sunlight, camels and Arabian landscapes, yet is unable to speak any Arabic! In another lifetime she is an unhappy Marie Antoinette, reflecting on the bitter irony of things such as how dreams are annihilated by brutal reality. That might be a subconscious reflection on how Helene's fantasies were being revealed as delusions by Flournoy's probings.

Flournoy seems to have been unsettled by the demonstration of genuine paranormal phenomena and declares himself convinced of the reality of telekinesis, thanks to the research of Charles Richet and the paranormal phenomena displayed in the trance sessions of Eusapia Palladino. However, he declares that the likelihood of a medium being genuine is 99-1. This book does seem to suggest that when someone communicates with a supposed dead relative, what they are actually doing is communicating with latent memories held in one of the participant's subconscious.

A peek into "another world"
If you are a voyeur at heart, you will love this book. Theodore Flournoy, Professor of Psychophysiology at the University of Geneva, got extremely close to his subject, Catherine Elise Muller, who he gave the pseudonym Helene Smith, and studied her for five years. On many occasions he provided his home as the locale for her excursions, each of which lasted several hours. And the subject rewarded Flournoy with an amazing display of behaviors.

Helene Smith was a Swiss medium. She created an alter ego for herself, Leopold, a reincarnation of Cagliostro, who regularly explained Helene's acts to Flournoy and provided suggestions for appropriate responses to her. Helene would often go into a deep sleep, and Leopold would carry on in her absence. What she and her friends perceived as visitations from spirits, Flournoy interpreted as manifestations of multiple personalities.

The book details Helene's seances, during some of which she would be possessed by the spirit of Marie Antoinette. On other occasions she would be possessed by Princess Simandini, a 15th century Arab princess married to a Hindoo potentate, and would re-enact her immolation on her husband's funeral pyre. She even proclaimed Flournoy the reincarnation of her deceased husband Sivrouka and re-enacted various scenes of their lives with him. In the course of her re-enactments, she spoke Sanskrit.

Her most extravagant exercise, however, was her migration to Mars and her description of Martian life, complete with specimens of the Martian language. Flournoy gives us a good look at Helene's impressions of life on Mars and transcriptions and translations of her Martian texts, These he dissects, reducing them to a variation on the French language.

Flournoy searched for genuine historical references to the events Helene re-enacted, and on occasion he made some very interesting discoveries. In the last pages of the book, he takes great pains to give us his assessment of Helene's displays and of spiritism in general. He dismisses both as genuine communications with the dead and recommends the ordinary religion of the day to those in need of sustenance. She never forgave him for it, and he never found another subject who rewarded his efforts with such prodigious feats.

The book is a joy to read. Flournoy's descriptions are thorough (and ultimately devastating), and his treatment of Helene is both gentle and entertaining, often tongue-in-cheek. Daniel B. Vermilye's 1901 translation, edited, restored, and introduced by Sonu Shamdasani, is fresh and entertaining. The explanatory and critical materials added for the benefit of readers removed by a century from the actual occurrences are genuinely helpful. I found the book fascinating.

The Greatest Fraud of the 20th Century
This book is an excellent piece of work.The author was successfully played by the infamous Mme. Helene Smith (an alias) who had created, based on her native language of French, a Martian language in one of her "mediumistic" states.Overall, it is an important work in the field of psychology and takes psychological analysis to a whole new level.I would sincerely recommend this work to a serious student of psychology to uncover the gullibility of a skeptic.

I use the artificial language on a walking stick that I carry at Renassaiance faires and I get lots of questions about the markings.

THE DREAM IS REAL
14-year-old Ginta Toramizu has had the same dream 102 times! Well, not exactly the same dream, but the same setting: The fantasy land of Marchen, where he lives a sword and sorcery fairy tale with him as the hero and his real-life friend and classmate Koyuki as the damsel he protects. In reality Ginta is a kid who daydreams too much, can't see without glasses, and is bullied and ridiculed by most of his peers. It doesn't help that his chain-smoking mother, who also happens to be a fantasy writer, isn't very supportive of him, and insinuates that he's not a good son and that he needs to get his head out of the clouds. Ginta wishes he could go to the land of Marchen just once for real! The wish comes true when a ghostly figure transports him there during school. He quickly finds that Marchen works by the rules of his dream instead of reality. Here, he can see perfect and is capable of astonishing feats of strength and endurance. Right off the bat he gets into a fight with an "Arm", which is an accessory engraved with mystical powers which comes in the form of a weapon, a summoned creature, or a dimensional gateway which is controlled by the owner. The Arm Ginta defeats was one of the Arms of the witch Dorothy, who wants to get the living weapon Arm called Bebbo. Ginta agrees to accompany her in the quest if she gives him an Arm in return. Little does Ginta know what he's getting into.

Mar is a series that probably would have fit better into the Shonen Jump line of manga which it falls into in terms of look and plot. Because Ginta possesses the powerful Bebbo Arm, everybody in the world who lusts for power wishes to wrest it from his possession, which means there's going to be a lot of fights in this series. I really liked the art which is very clean and the characters are very appealing in design. As for the story, it could use some work, but this isn't bad for a first volume. I think the real turning point is when Ginta realizes that even though he's having a ton of fun in Marchen, he knows in the end he can't stay there forever because his mom and Kuyuki will be worried about him. I think he really just misses them. Of course, he's going to have all kinds of adventures looking for the Arm that can transport him home. While this book will appeal more to kids it's still a pretty good read.

A Condensed Version of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus

In all of John Gray's books he seeks to simplify complex communications between men and women. In "In Touch" he also gives seven secrets for lasting passion. While this book is a summary of "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus," it still has some unique perspectives.

For most of the first chapter John Gray describes why women are overwhelmed by the demands of modern society. He also explores how men can nurture a woman's feminine side. He then goes on to describe the twelve types of love men and women need.

"To keep the magic of love alive we must be flexible and adapt to the ongoing changing seasons of love." ~ pg. 88

While I enjoyed part of this book I had to disagree with some of the main points. Some of John Gray's ideas don't seem to work in the real world. For instance, he states that women should not try to change men, that they will change when they are ready. Well, what if a man has an anger problem that is destroying a relationship. Is there really no need for change? Then he goes on to talk about how men need to listen in a different way. Is that not change? At times both partners need to change in small ways in order to avoid damaging behaviors.

In this book, women are still portrayed as combative (he says independent and assertive), while men are encouraged to be the strong silent warrior. While the types of men and women he describes are similar to his first book, there are a few good ideas that can be used in any relationship to improve communications. I like his idea of giving men time to transition from a work day to an evening at home with his wife. As far as I can tell, his ideas about men needing a cave are quite correct.

The Most Consise John Gray Book
I have enjoyed the books by John Gray.This one is actually my favorite.He says everything in this shortest of his books and he says it better than before.He leaves out the nonessential and puts everything you need in it.I have occasionally done counseling from a hypnotherapy standpoint.What I have found is that males and females do have different communication styles and needs.There are some basic signal jams that can be cleared up by using the ideas in the books of John Gray.It will not solve the issues of a relationship, but it will prevent the issues from getting compounded and feeling unresolvable.Communication is needed to work through the issues a relationship inevitably has and if the communication does not work, then problems become places we can stuck in and enough unresolved issues can make a person feel like quitting.Very often, clearing up the communication can dissolve many illusory problems and help see the real ones in a way that easily solves them.When a couple comes for sessions, this book or MEN ARE FROM MARS, WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS becomes automatic homework.If they do not read it, I go over the ideas and how they relate to the challenges that they are sharing.The first few sessions then become my reading the book for them.Once the communication is cleared up, then GETTING THE LOVE YOU WANT by Harville Hendrix goes deeper and touches the core issues.Then hypnotherapy and breath work can shift the work from intellectual understanding to emotional healing.

Great Manga!!!!

I'm in my twenties and this is one of the best mangas

Recaptured me.
I first started reading Mars when it was published in the shoujo manga magazine Smile, it stuck out to me but when Smile stopped printing in July 02' I didn't pick up on any of the series they put out there. Then about four years later I looked back on them with my best friend and Mars was the one that recaptured my interest. Since I own the first two books from Smile, I picked the third copy at Borders and I have continued to collect them (up to volume six now). Considering that it had been almost half a decade until I reread this series, it's saying something that I would still enjoy it so much (even more so now).

This particular volume starts going more in depth with Rei's twin brother Sei who had committed suicide when they were in Junior High. Oddly, Kira seems to share some very eerie similarities with him which raises some more serious questions. It also takes place as Rei is motorcycle racing in Suzuka and Kira is completing her painting of him. One of my favorites quotes is from Rei's friend Kyoko (a fellow motorcycle racer) when she says "Watching Rei's riding makes you realize that racing was made for men. Of course there's the physical strength aspect but our minds are structured differently. The instict to fight is purely male."

Mars is a manga worth picking up because although it may seem like a simple "good girl bad boy" love story, they're many powerful observations about life that transcend the romance itself, and great characters that keep the romance interesting. Awesome read.

A good manga book!
Just getting hooked off Maralade Boy, I thought that was the greatest book in the world, then I saw an advertisement on Mars.I thought it was quite interesting , so I said I wanted to get it. As lucky as it might sound , I was in the library when I saw Mars 1& 2 .Well I might have taken both of them but I knew my friend wanted one.After I read 1 & 2 , I was hooked but not as much as my friend .She ordered numbers 3,4,5,and 6. Right now she's waiting for 7,8,9,10,and 11.So do think someone would buy the whole series if it wasn't good? Well think again it's a great manga , perhaps the best.If you like romance and relationships I think you'll like it it even has action too.Also if you LOVE motorcycles there will be alot of it because Rei likes motorcycles.

Mars is a wonderful series.

The Art is Fantastic!
Well, I have to admit that I am prejudice.Tim Bradstreet is not the only Illustrator of this book.My brother, James Colton McGonigle, also provided illustration for this book as well.He is a fantastic fantasy artist!

Flying ships on Victorian Mars!
There are two ways of looking at this book, as a miniature based war-game, or a role-playing supplement for the Victorian era space-faring Space 1889 Game. The text-portions only of the original boxed games are put together well with rules errata between the two sections, little repetition and all of the record sheets together at the back. As a miniature based war-game, it has some obvious failings: no ship counters or miniatures and no playing map. While thirty odd deck-plans in Cloudships and Gunboats are very nicely reproduced, the scale is too small for the original intention of miniature 25mm deck battles and boarding actions (but there was only six plans reproduced in the original games large enough for this anyway). There are many miniature war-game rules which don't have pieces provided so this is not really a problem; go buy some. Lack of the game board can be overcome with a ruler/tape measure and perhaps a home-made turning circle. As all the diagrams and ship plans are to scale, you can make counters easily enough using the "silhouettes" (someone has done this on the web). Not ideal, but there you go. The greatest loss is of the two large colour hex maps, but tiny versions are visible on the back of the book for reference. As a Space 1889 campaign guide it is very useful; Cloudships and Gunboats in particular contains detailed descriptions of all major power's assets on Mars and Earth. Political details, history, where built, and where posted are all included. While the original Sky Galleons of Mars contains very useful maps of the Syrtis Major area and useful scenarios and campaign rules that could be the basis of a role-playing session, or a distraction within an existing one. In all day good overall view of what is the most interesting part of the Space 1889 world: flying ships.

There are better Goosebumps books
I've read a lot Goosebumps books to my kids, and this one is probably one of my least favorite. Oh, it's not a bad book -- in fact, like most in the series, it has a plot that moves briskly along and is good for some mild entertainment.

But there were two things I didn't like. First, the title gives too much away. The first half of the book involves a boy who finds a mysterious egg and wonders what it is. But if you've read the title of the book -- and of course you have! -- there's no mystery.

Second, I didn't like the ending much. It seemed rushed and left too many questions unanswered.

Green egg
Dana's little sister wants an egg hunt on her birthday. Dana has to participate as well. He finds an egg but it's no chicken egg. It's green and it seems to be breathing. He keeps it and waits for it to hatch. The hatchling is a yellow blob. Eager he takes it to the science lab. Big mistake...

Roving Mars
I was very impressed with this book. Great photos and interesting text. Although it is aimed at kids it is suitable for anyone interested in the Mars programme. It would make a good kid's prize for our Astronomy Open nights. It complements the 'Five Years on Mars' DVD.

Here in my car, I feel safest of all.
Sometimes I think that adult authors of children's non-fiction subjects get so wrapped up in their material that they forget (or, more likely, never knew how) to make the thing they are talking about palatable to kids.Here's a pretty good litmus test for any work of non-fiction: If you, the grown-up, fall asleep mid-sentence, then there's a pretty good chance a kid will do the same.Then they'll vow never to read non-fiction ever again.And I admit, I don't always notice this.I read a lot of children's literature, and it's easy to forget how boring a kid would find one type of writing or another.The nice thing is that when I read something really readable and child-centric, I notice.I noticed with "Cars on Mars", as it happens.Picture this: robots with extraordinary life spans exploring a planet 303,000,000 miles away.It's not science fiction, it's fact.And so kids can learn about two exploration rovers who beat the odds and withstood storms, freezing winters, and even sandpits in their efforts to explore a planet none of us have ever been to.Woot!Go, team, go!

In the summer of 2003 two little Mars Exploration Rovers named Spirit and Opportunity were launched from earth towards our distant neighbor.Both rovers landed safely and spent their time exploring their new home.Running on sunshine, the rovers were expected to last around three months.As of this book, they've covered almost six years and taken more than 217,000 photographs.They've survived several near death experiences, and yet they keep on plugging along.This is their story of what they found, with tons of photographs taken along the way.The book contains a Glossary of terms, a Bibliography, Source Notes, Photo Credits, Index, and a remarkable list of websites, including one that offers "the most up-to-date reports on the rovers."As of this review, they still appear to be functioning and moving along.

I have two theories about the scientists who worked on the Mars project and why this book is so kid-friendly.It could just be that they all have childlike sensibilities leading to incredibly fun information for children. One area of Mars is labeled Home Plate, and when a rover accidentally digs a ditch and exposes a bright patch of dirt there, the path is "Named Gertrude Weise, in honor of the 1944 star left-handed first baseman in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League."Huh!They have a way with names, these scientists.A patch of rubble accidentally crushed is dubbed Innocent Bystander.And then between the RAT (Rock Abrasion Tool) holes and the blueberries (little circular balls of hematite), the names keep you fascinated.

My second theory is that Siy is the one making it interesting.What she chooses to include makes all the difference. Sometimes it's a case of including photographs of people like the kid who won the Name the Rovers Contest.Other times it's how she chooses to describe things. For example, when it comes to the rovers, "Cruising speed is ten times slower than that of a wood turtle - averaging less than two feet per minute."The rover stumbles on a "Berry Bowl" and it's described as "A bunch of blueberries clustered closely together, like berries in the bottom of a cereal bowl."Layers of rock are compared to cakes, and referred to as a good thing when it comes to scientists studying the chemical composition of the layers.So therefore, when coming across bedrock Siy will sometimes mention, "There were no yummy rock layers here."It's that kind of writing that keeps kids from nodding off while reading.There's always some way of describing a situation or a scene that's going to keep the reader going.You just have to look for it.

There's also the fact that the story is so much fun.I mean, when you break it all down this is basically a tale about exploring.And, as with any explorer, things do not always go according to plan.Everything's just going fine and dandy until THWWPT!Spirit shuts down and the scientists have to figure out how to fix it.The problem?It crashed.The computer crashed.Even with all our smarts and our technology, computers still crash on Mars.I mean, the scientists manage to fix it from earth (no mean feat) but it's still one of those stories that gets you thinking.One of many.

So here's the thing about the pictures.It's not as if the two rovers have ever run into one another.So basically, if you see a picture in this book of a rover sitting on Mars, it's a fake shot.A computer generated simulation of what the scientists think it would look like.I guess it's as close as you can get to factual information, but it's still odd to pair photographs with CGI suppositions.Not that the book doesn't distinguish between the two each and every time.If there's a fake shot to be had, Siy is going to tell you.Just the same, it's hard to know what to think when you come across the third kind of photograph: the false color image.What does that mean?Dunno.No explanation is given, so kids will just have assume that if it says "false color" then the shades and hues seen there are fake.

I keep thinking back to an old "Simpsons" episode where NASA is trying to figure out how to get the general public interested in space exploration again.Sometimes I feel like NASA struggles with that same question in real life.How do you get people excited about space when they feel so jaded?How do we recapture our obsession with it?Maybe the answer is the get the children while they're young.Kids have a natural aptitude for dreaming about the sky.Tap into that and what you have is a whole new generation of potential scientists and explorers.Lots of children's books discuss the original moon landings or what it means to be an astronaut.Until now, I feel like Mars has gotten short shrift.No longer."Cars on Mars" grips the kids with its title, then hauls them into a great story laden with facts that are consistently interesting.Throw in a heaping handful of photographs and images and brother, you've got yourself a potential fan.

Near the end of the book Siy mentions that "When this book went to press in late 2008, the rovers had been on Mars for almost five years."You gotta appreciate the fact that the woman places this book within the context of its times.For all she knew, the rovers would discover skeletons of ancient space bats the month after she turned in these pages.So many children's books about exploration set their stories in the distant past.How different it is to read about exploration that's happening NOW?You know those kids fascinated with exploration?Tell them about this book.Make it clear to them that explorers still exist, and that sometimes they're both 303,000,000 and sitting in a lab on Earth at the same time.The world has changed a lot since the days of De Soto.Maybe Siy's book is exactly what kids need to transfer their exploring instinct from outward to upward.

Art and science at its best!
This is a beautiful and important book that opens up another world to young readers. The images of Mars are astonishing. The writing is fun, yet scientifically informative. Buckle your seat belt for the most far-out road trip ever! ... Read more

PHANTOM ARRIVES
Mar has defeated the first batch of Chess Piece antagonists and won the first round of the War Games. But the Pieces they defeated were pretty much small fry and now Phantom himself has arrived with 12 other Knight-class fighters. It's not all bad news as Ginta is able to use "Guardian Alice", the holy arm form of Babbo to lift the curse off Ed so that he and Snow's dog no longer have to share their bodies. To prepare them for the coming battles and to increase their power, Ed sends Mar off to the alternate dimension of the Training Gate. There they will have to fight against shadow versions of themselves.

Volume 7 doesn't have a lot of plot advancement and consists mainly of battles, but we do learn a bit more about Alviss and his relationship with Ginta's dad. Also, the ability of Phantom to manipulate his followers makes him a more sinister enemy than first thought. Mar is a title that you enjoy in spite of yourself because the action is drawn so good and you root for the characters to win. Mar has to keep on ratcheting up their powers and spiritual strength to continue the War Games. This is a good book. It's childlike appeal disguises some pretty graphic violence at times. ...
