Not blessed with the adorable good looks of a koala, the mythic mystery of a dinosaur, or even the useful familiarity of a dog, the manatee is an infrequent hero in the world of children's literature. It doesn't help matters that the poor thing has a name that's so difficult to rhyme. But the unnamed hero of John Lithgow and Ard Hoyt's I'm a Manatee (really, a boy dreaming he is a manatee) sees plenty of upside to the life of the animal that's been indelicately nicknamed the "cow of the sea." And when rhymes are unavailable to state his case, he simply makes some up: "Encumbered by my lumbering gigan-atee,/ I'm thought to be an ocean-going brute!/ The least appealing creature on the planet-ee,/ But to a manatee, I'm cute!" The words in the book are the same as the lyrics in the song version of I'm a Manatee, which is included on an enclosed CD featuring a singing Lithgow as well as in musical notation in the back of the book. The verses sound more natural in their original musical form than they do read aloud in the pages of the book where they can clunk a bit. Still, there's much to like about in this aquatic flight of fancy, including the kind of wordplay moms and dads will enjoy (very few kids' books contain the phrase "immune from human folly and inanity") and Hoyt's illustrations of the title animal, which manages to be simultaneously homely and adorable. One of our favorite nightime bed reads!
I stumbled across this book in a lot I bought.It is so wonderful that I am buying it in hard cover so we can cherish it for years to come.The song is one I use to sing my child to sleep as well.A very well written children's bedtime book!Love it.

Fun & Educational
I bought this for our 7 y.o. son for Christmas b/c he loves manatees.He loves this book & CD, and it has been quite a hit for our entire family.It's fun, cute and educational.We had fun laughing together!

The Book and CD are fabulous, but why is there no Hardcover ed.
This is by far my children's favorite John Lithgow book and song.It is funny, has a catchy tune and the illustrations are beautiful.My only problem is that I thought I was getting this in the Hardback edition, but it turns out they don't have one on Amazon.

I'm a Manatee - a grandchild's favorite
Originally I got "I'm a Manatee" for free in a Cheerios box.My two year old grand daughter loved it so much, I bought the book and CD as a birthday gift for one of her little friends (who loves it as well).When I heard the CD I just knew my grand daughter needed to have it too - now we sing it together.Wonderful little book. Well illustrated. The CD makes it doubly enjoyable.

Maybe for older kids or grownups this would be alright
I love manatees, and I love reading to my daughter so I couldn't pass this book up when I saw it at the book store.Unfortunately I was disappointed.The art is good, not great just good and the text is mostly meaningless rhyming of manatee with made up words (Manatee's eat raisin bran-atee).This is not useful if you are trying to teach your kids to read or increase vocabulary.Worse yet the plot of the story is told primarily through the illustrations which don't have all that much to do with the text.Probably this one is more fun for adults who enjoy reading nonsense than it is for kids, who I imagine would just be confused. ... Entertaining But Uneven
Like the waters of Key Biscayne, in and near where much of the plot of this book occurs, this story is choppy.That's to be expected, given the novel consists of 13 chapters, no two written by the same author.Dave Barry kicks off the story, Carl Hiaasen finishes it, and the writers in between are all seasoned Floridian authors of varying renown.Some of the chapters are funnier than others, some better written, and a couple don't work at all.The approach makes for disjointed storytelling at best, and reads more like a series of tenuously interconnected vignettes than an actual story.It's an interesting writing experiment, but one that's been done before and better.If you're a fan of any of these authors or the peculiar inanities of south Florida life, you'll enjoy this book.

Naked Manatee
Very enjoyable book. Surprising to have such an author lineup, one/chapter. Left the mystery a little shallow but a fun read.

Crazy good read!
I had a lot of fun reading this mess of a book, but if you are looking for a 'normal' novel then you might want to run the other way. This is NOT a book to be taken very seriously (and if you try then you'll probably end up hating it). It's like the pass a long stories you wrote with friends back in school - it jumps around adding and dumping characters at will and it sometimes seems like the authors wanted to see how crazy they could make their chapter end to see how the next author would write their way out of the mess. I think it was pure ridiculously demented fun from Dave Barry's opening to Carl Hiassen's ending.

A Manatee with an Identity Crisis
In case you didn't know, this book is actually written by several Florida authors, each contributing a chapter and taking the story where they so choose.I believe it was originally published in a magazine, with each author submitting the next installment of the story.The first is Dave Barry and the final is Carl Hiaasen with several other prime examples of Floridian writing genius in between.

This book covers the bases when it comes to Florida humor, taking place in Miami, we have nature lovers, skin divers, lawyers, police, Castro Impersonators, drug dealers, hit men, famous actors, and of course Castro himself.Throw in a couple of severed heads and a manatee with an identity crisis and you have an entertaining 201 pages.

The manner of the writing of this book leads to characters making drastic personality changes, some characters not getting a proper ending, and lots of laughter all around.The writing styles vary from chapter to chapter, some more focused on plot than others, but I recommend this book to anyone looking for a short entertaining read that they don't want to invest a lot into.

Too many cooks and all that . . .
If you are a fan of any of these authors, do yourself the favor of sticking with their individual efforts.Hiaasen's chapter (the final one) cracks broadly at the missteps of several previous authors.I enjoyed only 3 chapters (Berry, Hall, & Hiaasen), and I put up with the rest to see how Mr. Hiaasen would tie it up.Even his talents could not salvage this - and here, I strongly agree with other reviewers - MESS. ... James Powell knows his manatees!
James "Buddy" Powell may be the world's greatest authority on the subject of manatees, since he began studying them while he was still a teeanger in Crystal River, Fla. This book, filled with beautiful photos and his personal observations on the gentle giants, is a wonderful addition to any library. The Missing Manatee
The Missing Manatee was a very engaging and enthusiastic book. Once I started I could not put it down. It was written by Cynthia Defelice. The plot of the book was very fun to read about. I enjoyed it the whole way through the book.
Skeet Waters, the main character, all he wants to do is catch a tarpon. He never gets the chance to though. As he is riding around on his boat he finds a dead manatee. This makes the book very interesting in my opinion. They investigate the scene though out the book.
The setting of the book which is in Florida is very important to the book. It set the tone for the whole book. In my opinion this book was very good. I recommend to everyone to give this book a shot, it's good. Even if you're looking for a quick book to hook you on and have an enjoyable read!

An exciting and suspensional story
From a teacher and graduate student's view point, I thought this was an awesome book. It was full of adventure and suspense. Skeet was on a mission and he was going to let nobody stop him. I think this would be an awesome book to use as a teacher read aloud and/orused as a "cliffhanger" activity. His Memaw added a touch of humor to the story which made it even better. Finally, the end had a surprising twist to it and one that I wasn't expecting. This was a very fun story to read.

Appreciating the beauty and fragility of the ugly manatee
I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Text and pictures speak so clearly of the wonderful aspects of this creature that you can't help understanding how important it is that we take care of our environment and respect all living things.

Anyone who reads this little book will be touched by the gentle and loving ways of the "sea cow".

I love this book!
I received this book as a souvenier from my sister when she went to Florida. I was in 2nd grade and so excited to have a book about manatees. It's very sweet. The pictures are bright and cute, and take up the whole page; perfect for children. And the story teaches a good lesson: Humans are making the ocean a dangerous place for sea animals. The ocean belongs to them, and we need to be more careful with our technology, otherwise there won't be any sea creatures left at all. This is a wonderful book, great for any animal-loving child!

Grassroots actions can work sometimes
Pittman does a superb job describing the now decades-long war between all the special interest groups, scientists, and the government, over this wonderful docile creature who has no natural enemy except man. Manatees can offer no defense except to try and swim away from dangers and mothers cannot even protect their calves except to get between them and danger. They are total vegetarians but boats and development have ruined or destroyed many areas where the water grasses grow. The warm water they rely on from the natural springs is being pulled from the aquifer to water lawns and golf courses.(They cannot tolerate temperatures below 68 degrees and the springs are 72). He's dead-on with his insights on how money and politics have played major roles to trump development over science at the local, state, federal, and international levels. He does try to balance the equation by telling what the other sides have to say, however flawed I think their reasonings are. For me this book was almost a page-turner to see what arguments would be floated up next. Read this book; get your friends to read this book! The manatee is the "canary" in the mine. If we fail to save this animal and its habitat there is not a lot of hope left for anything at any time. Something is only "saved" as long as it has no perceived value (land, water, animals, etc.). Let someone figure out how to make a buck and they will use their money and influence to get the place or animal re-designated to their desires to make that buck. Oddly enough all the businesses mentioned in this book are mostly still in business no matter how loudly they squawked before that the restrictions to save manatees would run them into bankruptcy (if anything, the economy would have been responsible for that, not the manatee). Meanwhile, manatees are still dying by the hand of man.

Manatees are very special gentle giants.They "neither threaten nor are threatened by any other wildlife," a very unique trait in this world.They live and thrive in warm water and if the water temperature dips below 68 degrees Fahrenheit, they can actually die.Another threat to these gentle creatures are propeller blades from boats.These mammals are distant relatives of elephants and you can easily "see the resemblance in a manatee's thick gray skin."Fully grown they can be quite heavy at a whopping 3,000 pounds or more and can "grow to be 13 feet long."

Gentle Giants with Heart
Hello. I bought this book for my son who loves manatees. Having lived in Florida, we would seek out manatees whenever we could. The photography by Mr. Sweeney of these mammals is stunning.I enjoyed reading about the manatees, as there were many facts I did not know.I would highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys manatees or books about underwater animals. It is a great book to have out as many people are unaware of these 'gentle giants' and enjoy reading about them when they see the book.

Good but not Great as a Photography Book
The book contains a few pages of basic information about manatees and some facts in picture captions but readers who want a thorough understanding are better to look atManatees by James Powell. There are many photos and some with really cute poses, but the printing is very dark and sometimes they are not sharply in focus.I have seen books with better photos which more accurately show the crystal clear, azure blue world of the FLorida Manatee

I just read the book called MANATEE. I thought this book was very good because it has tons of information all about manatees. The book has great photographs, I think the photographs are the best part of the book but MANATEES still has lots of reading information. I think the book is great for learning. The book goes from history to what they look like. The book has all sorts of information. I liked this book and I think people ages 9 and up would like it too. I really do recommend the book MANATEES.

Spectacular!
This book contained some of the best manatee photographs that I have ever seen. The text was general, and there wasn't much of it, but it is the perfect size for someone just learning about manatees. *Pictures, pictures, pictures!!*

A must have for manatee lovers!

Manatee Winter
ISBN 1568990782 - While not exactly non-fiction, Manatee Winter is educational, which is always a plus. The involvement of the Smithsonian Institution is a good thing, too, but not quite good enough.

A mother manatee and her calf head to warmer waters for the winter, encountering the dangerous propellers of fishing boats along the way. One specific encounter separates the two, scaring Little Calf into weeds which he can't escape on his own. Mother must help him and continue encouraging him so that they can reach the safety of a warm spring, where Little Calf will meet other baby manatees for the first time.

Illustrator Steven James Petruccio did a very nice job; the problem isn't his work but the general boring-ness of the relatively accurate images. A manatee under water looks like a manatee under water and there are few images including anything else. In the back of the book, there is a list of "Points of Interest" that name pages where you can find specific things. For pages 22-23, it says "egret, red mangrove trees", but the egret's head is mostly cut off at the top of the page and the trees are represented only by roots. Author Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld did a very nice job, as well, and the book is best, in my opinion, as a vaguely educational text. As a storybook for young children, it's a little boring.
