Malta can serve well as a prism for understanding much that is important about lifeways in the Mediterranean: trade, subsistence systems, religion, urbanization, and the transmigration of peoples in war and in peace. ... Product Description
Malta presents a very lucid view of a beautiful, appealing, culturally rich, and strategically important island country that hasendured against the odds - or perhaps because of them. Readers will findin Malta a land upon which the hand of man has brought about extensivealteration and, as a consequence, has created an unusually intensecultural landscape undergoing significant transformation as the "islandfortress of the Mediterranean" adapts to the demands and opportunities ofthe modern world.

Roger Balm introduces the reader first to the natural landscape of Malta, but always relates important categories of landforms, weather, water andvegetation to the human presence. Next, the major historical and culturaltraditions of Malta are identified, and these are followed by a review ofmodern Maltese society and economy, along with a tour of the main islandof Malta. The book concludes with a forward-looking assessment of thecurrent and near future status of Malta as a member of the world communityof nations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZINGNESS IN BOOK FORM
This is an amazing book, both informative and well written. It is nicely formatted and extremely easily read. Though the book is not very long, I felt that I had a learned a lot from it. I actually had no previous interest in Malta what so ever, but now I admit, genuinely, that I have a desire to pursue and learn more about the small island archipelago. The Author is a truly amazing man and Rutgers University is greatly privileged to have his tenure. ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Malta," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Malta in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Malta when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Malta, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Qala ({pronounced Aala in English}) is a village on Gozo Island, Malta, with a population of 1,609 people (Nov 2005). Nearby is Ħondoq ir-Rummien, a coastline with salt pans and caves popular with snorkellers. Qala first referred to in a fifteenth century portolan preserved at the Vatican library has taken its name from the qala or port of Ħondoq ir-Rummien. It is the easternmost village of Gozo and has been inhabited since early times. The development of the present settlement began in the second half of the seventeenth century. It is a pleasant and rural place with many natural and historic attractions. Though Qala is the farthest village from Gozo's capital, Victoria, it is the closest to the rest of the Maltese archipelago, and the rocky hillsides of Qala enjoy an unobstructed view of the islands of Malta and Comino. ...
