Indispensable!
This is a great map, we brought it with us wherever we went and it helped us find where we wanted to go. At the B& B where we stayed, this is the same map that the owner gives out to her guests. It's a great map.

Generally Good, But One Hitch
This is a good map, for the most part, especially with its detailed scheme of the Central Business District and the French Quarter.On the flip side, there is a map of the whole city but -- and this is the confusing part -- there is also another -- Uptown -- map which is confusing because it is a different scale from the one on the first side.So, you have to really study it just to see where the two maps connect.Maybe, given the limited space, they couldn't avoid this, but it makes the map a little confusing.I found the map excellent for getting around the Tourist areas.The lamination allows no-brainer folding -- a trend in maps I hope continues.

Accurate and Helpful
My wife and I went to New Orleans for a few days and found this map invaluable.It lists hotels, streetcar routes, clubs/bars, restaurants and even shopping sites.Additionally we were there during a tropical storm (torrential rains) and the fact that it was laminated was awesome.I would highly recommend this item for your next trip to the "BIG EASY"

Got us around NO!
I used this map to supplement a travel book.We mainly stayed in the French Quarter but got to the Garden District as well.The map certainly helped us stay oriented and at times, we left the book in the hotel and just went with the map.It is sturdy and easy to fold.I have used several of these maps on my travels and generally like them. ... The "Uncharted" is "Charted"
I purchased this volume at the Louisiana Book Festival the year it came out.I even got the authors/editors to sign it.During a presentation and discussion of the book, it fell to the floor with a loud thud.The speaker quipped that it was "heavy reading". While it is a large book, I would hardly rate it a "coffee table book". This is an excellent well done book with a lot of color and information throughout.Maps from all the countries that had an interest (and some that didn't) in the Louisiana territory from the age of exploration until the last of the twentieth century.Excellent price too!I would've waited but I really wanted the signatures.I can't ever see selling this book.It is a great aid to re-enactors and living history personnel.No museum in the Louisiana Purchase should be without this book either.Kudos!

A wonderful history of Louisiana in maps
This coffee table volume was produced to celebrate the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase. It contains 193 high-quality reproductions of important maps illustrating the development of Louisiana from the early sixteenth century to the present. Each map is accompanied by an historical essay placing the map in its cultural context. There is a detailed cartobibliography and list of selected readings.

The maps themselves are wonderfully reproduced. Here are a couple of examples of the essays:

"21. A Map of Louisiana And Of The River Mississippi by John Senex. London, [1718 or 1719]. The Historic New Orleans Collection

"A restless band of Carolina tranders--who crossed the Appalachian Mountains seeking closer economic relations with Native American nations to the west--galvanized English interest in Louisiana and the Mississippi River valley. In light of this development, English mapmaker John Senex responded to market demands with this map, copying liberally from Guillaume de L'Isle's ca.1718 Carte de la Louisiane et du Cours du Mississipi. This plagiarism did not, of course, include L'Isle's notation about French claims to Carolina. Interestingly, Senex dedicated his map to William Law, the father of financier John Law, whose scheme to develop French Louisiana eventually caused the ruin of many European investors."

Mathew Carey became a pioneer American map publisher following his immigration to Philadelphia from Dublin in 1784. Carey set up a publishing firm financed by the marquis de Lafayette, with whom he had earlier become friends in Paris. His success in publishing Guthrie's Geography Improved led him to similar projects. Carey's American Atlas of 1795 was the earliest atlas of the United States. His American Pocket Atlas, in which the map of Louisiana appeared, was published in editions of 1796, 1801, 1809, 1813, and 1814. He had issued the earliest printed map of Louisiana as a state in 1813, which appears here in an enlarged version from his 1814 General Atlas. This map was probably compiled by Samuel Lewis, Carey's principal mapmaker."

This book makes for fascinating reading and study.

Louisiana Atlas - a great purchase
A great atlas and just what I needed for touring around Louisiana. I had the atlas sent to my brother, based in N. Orleans (I am from the UK) and he was pretty impressed by the content. We toured up country Louisiana and the atlas proved invaluable - finding a few of the smaller roads quite easily. Well worth the money.

Sadly lacking
This could have been an excellent map book, but there are no inserts for cities. Not even New Orleans has a decent close-up and the rest are left out altogether. I've never travelled without at least having to go through a city and the majority of the time my trip is to a city. The free state maps given at welcome centers did a better job than this.

As detailed as you'd expect from DeLorme...but too commercial
I used this atlas to travel around Acadiana and the Pontchartrain district recently. Great for secondary roads but, as with many other DeLorme products lately, they have cut out detail on major roads for the sake of trying to make this like a tourist atlas like Ran McNally, etc. The beauty of my NC atlas is the finite detail on freeway exits and the like. I wish they would cut down on highlights unless they are going to keep the ramp details. Otherwise, it was much better than the "Roads of Louisiana" for my back-road jaunts. ... Read more

GREAT MAP OF NEW ORLEANS
I am looking forward to visiting New Orleans soon.....and as usual --I liketo know a little bit about where I am going beforehand.I want to figure out placement of the hotels before making my reservations along with distances to the places I want to visit.

This map is great for doing this.It shows hotels along the waterfront . French Quarter and more inland places as well. It shows places to visit ..park and shop. The best of New Orleans !

Not only that---but its laminated so that if I spill my coffee on it when I get dreamy eyed making my plans---I can't ruin it !!

Yet , It folds nicely into "quarters " for smaller viewing.

One side is close up of the city---the reverse is a wide view showing the highways and streets in case your driving !

This loss has increased storm vulnerability and amplified risks to lives, property, and economies--a fact underscored by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Wonderful Material, Boring Beyond Belief
This book was required for a class that I took and it did its job, assuming drawing blood from my eyeballs was in its job description.While it did provide excellent material for a research essay, it provided absolutely no enjoyment, at all, to my life.The information contained within is easily five years old and greater than 90% of it is available through Google.See: "Louisiana Coast", "Coast 2050," and the state road map.

Please, for the sake of your own existence, do not purchase this book.If you absolutely must (for a class, or something), try to get it cheap, or just don't go to that class.

Drawing the Oily Line Around BP
The impacts of Katrina were bad enough. I picked this title up, right after that event. The planners, economists, geologists, oceanographers, and marine scientists who came together for the LCA study did an admirable job of laying out plans for the restoration of the LA coastal ecology and describing the critical knowledge gaps; an excellent summary of the historic coastal ecosystem was also provided. Now all you want to do is throw up your hands and cry. The book mentions thousands of miles of oil and gas pipelines cut through marsh for exploration, to sink wells, etc. (p 48). No where is there a discussion of the potential catastrophic impacts of a rig blow-out off the coast. Why would the NRC want to upset the oil powers that be? Perhaps now it's time to go back to the crude drawing board.
You just want to take a miniature drilling rig and penetrate the deepest brain tissues of the the DRILL IT BABY mentality. ... Read more
