Excerpt: The Black Country Living Museum (formerly The Black Country Museum) is an open-air museum of rebuilt historic buildings, located in Dudley in the West Midlands of England. The museum occupies a 105,000 square metres (26 acres) urban heritage park in the shadow of Dudley Castle in the centre of the Black Country conurbation. It was first opened in 1978, on land partly reclaimed from a former railway goods yard, disused lime kilns and former coal pits; and since then many more exhibits have been added to it. The Museum preserves some notable buildings from around the Metropolitan Boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall and the City of Wolverhampton; mainly in a specially built village. Most of the buildings are original, relocated from their original sites. As a living museum, these form a base from which volunteers portray life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Museum is constantly changing as new exhibits, especially buildings in the village, are being added. While most of the exhibits are indoors, on a wet day suitable clothing is recommended for walking between buildings. Excerpt: The Henry Ford -LogoThe Edison Institute was dedicated by President Herbert Hoover to Ford's longtime friend Thomas Edison on October 21, 1929 the 50th anniversary of the invention of the incandescent light bulb. Of the 260 people in attendance, some of the more famous were Marie Curie, George Eastman, John D. Rockefeller, Will Rogers, and Orville Wright. The dedication was carried on radio with listeners encouraged to turn off their electric lights until the switch was flipped at the Museum. The Edison Institute was originally composed of the Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village, and the Greenfield Village Schools (an experimental learning facility). Initially, Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum were owned by the Ford Motor Company which cooperates with the Henry Ford to provide the Ford Rouge Factory Tour and is a sponsor of the school. The Henry Ford is sited between the Ford Dearborn test track and several Ford engineering buildings with which it shares the same style gates and brick fences. 90. Movieland Wax Museum & Palace of Living Art. Buena Park, California.
 Paperback: Pages (1999)

Asin: B001A8VRA8

Editorial Review

Product Description
9 x 6 Staple-bound booklet. 12 Pages. Color photos. Small tear to front cover. "After 43 years in business and 10 million visitors, Movieland Wax Museum closed its doors for good on Oct. 31, 2005. About 50 of the museum's celebrity figures were shipped to a sister museum in San Francisco, and 80 others went to a museum in South Korea. Most of the rest were put up for public auction in March 2006, which brought in over a million dollars. The "Star Trek" cast went to a fan for $34,000. The Elizabeth Taylor / Cleopatra figure went for $25,000 The Christopher Reeve / Superman figure sold for $16,000 (just days after the death of Reeve's widow), and Elvis went for $14,000. That giant statue of Michelangelo's "David" that stood outside trhe museum? It brought in $120,000. The buyer was none other than USA Equities, which also bought several of the wax figures. They hope to incorporate a small part of the old museum into their new development, to "blend the old with the new..." The building will be demolished and replaced by "Movieland Plaza", a shopping center featuring a Best Buy store and a food court. However, there will be one reminder (beyond the name) of the former museum: some of the museum's wax stars will be on display (inside glass cases) at the new center, including Liz Taylor, Rudolph Valentino, Shirley Temple, Superman, Austin Powers and General George Patton - along with the museum's giant replica of Michelangelo's "David"." ...
