Excerpt:New Salem is the name of a former village in Menard County (previously Sangamon County), Illinois, United States. It was located northwest of Springfield, approximately 3 mi (4.8 km) south of Petersburg. It was the 1831 homestead of future U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. It is not the same as the present village of New Salem in Pike County, Illinois. Main streetNew Salem was founded in 1828, when James Rutledge and John Camron built a gristmill on the Sangamon River. Over the first few years of its existence, the town grew rapidly, but after the county seat was located in nearby Petersburg, the village began to shrink and by 1840, it was abandoned. The fact that the Sangamon River was not well-suited for steamboat travel was also a reason for the town's decline. Lincoln arrived in New Salem by way of flatboat at age 22 and he remained in the village for about 6 years. During his stay, Lincoln earned a living as a shopkeeper, soldier in the Black Hawk War, general store owner, postmaster, land surveyor, rail splitter, as well as doing odd jobs around the village. As far as historians know, Lincoln never owned a home in the village as most single men did not own homes at this time; however, he would often sleep in the tavern or his general store and board (take his meals) with a nearby family. The village was home to a cooper shop, blacksmith shop, four general stores, a tavern, a grocery, two doctors offices, a shoemaker, a carpenter, a hat maker, a tanner, a schoolhouse/church and several residences. During its short existence, the village was home to anywhere from 20-25 families at a time. It is important to r...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=797542 ... Read more

Excerpt: Iolani Palace -In the early 19th-century, this area was known as Pohukaina, probably from pohu ka ina which in the Hawaiian language means "the land is calm". It may also been named for the chief of the same name (sometimes spelled Pahukaina) who was from Hawaii island. The land was to Kekauluohi, who later ruled as Kuhina Nui, as her birthrights. The missionary Hiram Bingham I was allowed to build a missionary compound of his house and what became the Kawaiahao Church outside of the old town. Some thatched huts were built for royalty to be near a school that the missionaries ran for the royal family at the church. Another missionary William Ellis built his home there, and Prime Minister Kalanimoku decided to build the first stone house on the site, naming it "Pohukaina". After Kalanimoku's death, the building, often referred to as a palace, became the meeting hall for the council of chiefs. Oral history told of an ancient heiau (temple to the Hawaiian religion) called Kaahaimauli that was destroyed in the area. After 1825, the first Western-style royal tomb was constructed for the bodies of King Kamehameha II and his queen Kammalu. They were buried on August 23, 1825. The idea was heavily influenced by the tombs at Westminster Abbey during Kamehameha II's trip to London. The mausol...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=469613 ... Read more

Product Description
Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: The Black Country Living Museum (formerly The Black Country Museum) is an open-air museum of rebuilt historic buildings, located in Dudley in the West Midlands of England. The museum occupies a 105,000 square metres (26 acres) urban heritage park in the shadow of Dudley Castle in the centre of the Black Country conurbation. It was first opened in 1978, on land partly reclaimed from a former railway goods yard, disused lime kilns and former coal pits; and since then many more exhibits have been added to it. The Museum preserves some notable buildings from around the Metropolitan Boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall and the City of Wolverhampton; mainly in a specially built village. Most of the buildings are original, relocated from their original sites. As a living museum, these form a base from which volunteers portray life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Museum is constantly changing as new exhibits, especially buildings in the village, are being added. While most of the exhibits are indoors, on a wet day suitable clothing is recommended for walking between buildings. Canal boat at the Black Country Living Museum.A prominent landmark on the Tipton Road passing the main entrance is the frontage of Rolfe Street Baths, relocated from Smethwick. To the left of the main entrance is a more conventional exhibition area with displays of a number of artefacts made in the Black Country. This includes not only machinery, various kinds of vehicles, and the iron products which are a major feature of Black Country industry. It also includes more fragile items such as glassware, reflecting the centuries old industry of lead crystal glass production as well as the Joseph Chance glass works between Oldbury and Smethwick. Electric trams and trolleybuses transport visitors from the entrance in a recreated factory to the village area with thirty buildings situated by the canal b...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Leonis Adobe, built in 1844, is one of the oldest surviving private residences in Los Angeles County and one of the oldest surviving buildings in the San Fernando Valley. Located in what is now Calabasas, California, the adobe was occupied by the wealthy rancher, Miguel Leonis, until his death in 1889. Following Leonis' death, the property was the subject of a legal dispute between his common law wife, heirs, and a daughter born out of wedlock; the dispute lasted more than 15 years in the courts. In 1961, the adobe had fallen victim to vandalism, and its owner applied for a permit to raze the structure and erect a supermarket in its place. Preservationists succeeded in having the adobe declared a Historic-Cultural Landmark (the first structure in Los Angeles receiving the designation) in 1962. Leonis Adobe is also known as one of the most haunted sites in Los Angeles County, and it was profiled in the British paranormal television series "Most Haunted" in 2005. The adobe was restored and is operated as a living museum. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The original portion of the adobe dates to 1844, but little is known about its use before it was acquired by Miguel Leonis. Some reports indicate that the adobe served as a stagecoach stop on the Camino Real between Mission San Buenaventura and Mission San Fernando Rey de España. The adobe was acquired by Miguel Leonis (18241889) in the 1850s or 1860s. Leonis was a bearded, 6-foot, 4-inch native of the Basque region in the French Pyrenees. Leonis controlled much of the west end of the San Fernando Valley and part of Ventu...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=17152862 ... Read more

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug:Dudley (·)) is a large town in the West Midlands, England, with a population of 194,919. Since 1974 it has been the administrative centre of the wider Metropolitan Borough of Dudley; the original County Borough had undergone a lesser expansion in 1966. It is the 19th largest settlement in England measured by Urban Sub-Area, the second largest town in the United Kingdom, behind Reading and the largest settlement in the UK without its own university. Dudley is part of the West Midlands conurbation, and is located south of Wolverhampton. It is the largest town in the Black Country. For many years the town (but not the castle) formed part of an exclave of Worcestershire entirely surrounded by Staffordshire - which has determined the fact that, in ecclesiastical terms, it has remained part of the Anglican Diocese of Worcester. Dudley has a history dating back to medieval times. Dudley Castle has stood on a hill overlooking the town since the 11th century, and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The present castle dates from the 13th century, and provided the centre around which the town grew. Dating from the 12th century are the ruins of St James Priory, set within the Priory Park. Dudley CastleThe town industrialised rapidly in the 18th and 19th centuries, and its population grew dramatically. Due to its heavy and highly polluting industries it became a central part of the Black Country. The main industries in Dudley included coal and limestone mining. Other industries included iron, steel, engineering, metallurgy, glass cutting, textiles and leatherworking. Most of these industries have declined in recent decades. Of historical significance, the first Newcomen steam engine was installed at the Conygree coalworks a mile east of Dudley Castle in 1712. Dudley was a predominantly rural town as recently as the early 18th century, after which the Industrial Revolution saw many factories and co...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Excerpt: Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial -The centerpiece of the memorial is a one-story limestone ashlar memorial building completed in 1944 (in spite of the shortages caused by World War II) that features five sculpted murals of the different phases of Lincoln's life. The building can be accessed after paying an entrance fee. Within the building is a small theater where a film about the Lincoln's life in Indiana can be viewed. A museum featuring several exhibits and artifacts surrounding Lincoln's life are located in an adjoining hall. Within the building can also be found a sizable private gallery of Lincoln-related artwork, including numerous portraits and lithographs of Lincoln and his family, and the park is home to an original oil painting of Abraham's mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Also inside the memorial building is a chapel and meeting hall were weddings and other gatherings are frequently held. A short walk from the Memorial building is the site of the Lincoln cabin where the sandstone foundation of the building still remains, preserved by the park and surrounded by a barricade to prevent physical access to the structure. It was discovered through professional archeological investigation. A short distance from the original cabin site is a replica farm house. Rangers work the 1820s style farm in full period clothing, and visitors can engage with the rangers about the many activities and items at the farm. The Living Historical Farm is only open from mid-spring to early fall and contains home grown crops, livestock, and various other farm implements.
