Product Description
Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is acknowledged as America's greatest architect. By the first decade of the twentieth century he had reexamined all aspects of architecture, pioneering advanced applications of materials, transforming interior space into continuous interwoven areas, and redefining architectural programs for the new democratic society he envisioned. Over the next five decades, while fulfilling specific commissions, he continued to conceive of individual buildings as solutions to general problems. His designs can be grouped into nine typologies according to the basic human functions they were designed to serve: communal work, commerce, worship, learning, the arts, recreation, the community, individual dwelling, and communal dwelling. Near the end of his life, in 1958, Wright published The Living City, the final version of his vision of an ideal social order. Indeed, all of his building and projects can be seen, retrospectively, as prototypes and proposals, models for the new, decentralized pattern of living that he offered as a blueprint for the future and from which we have much to learn today.

Frank Lloyd Wright and the Living City is an innovative survey of Wright's career focused upon the nine basic building types found in the Living City and pursuing the evolution of each throughout his career. The text and illustrations combine to reveal his lifelong ideal of organic architecture, in which he envisioned each building, its interior, and the furniture and fixtures within it, as well as the surrounding landscape or town. Edited by David G. De Long, the book includes essays by David G. De Long on Wright and his vision of the Living City, by Jean-Louis Cohen on Wright and the European reception of his designs, by David A. Hanks on Wright's decorative arts and their European counterparts, and by J. Michael Desmond, Richard Joncas, and Jack Quinan on the nine typologies. Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer has contributed a biographical outline of the architect's career. The book accompanies a major traveling exhibition organized by the Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein, Germany, with the collaboration of Exhibitions International, New York, and with the cooperation of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Architectural Travel Guide to Morocco
For seven hundred years, Morocco and Spain were politically, culturally and economically inter-connected.This close relationship was severed in 1492, when the Spanish monarchs expelled Spain's large Jewish and Muslim minorities. Many of the refugees fled to neighboring Morocco where they brought with them their rich artistic traditions."Andulisian Morocco" endeavors to show the living legacy of those refugees which still can be seen in Morocco.

The core of this book are eight travel itineraries through Morocco.Unlike most travel guides, this one is written by Moroccan art historians who provide suggested architectural routes through Meknes, Fez, Chefchaouen, Tetouan and the ports that line the Straits of Gibraltar. This book is a must for anyone who wants to understand the deep cultural ties that bind not only Morocco to Spain but that which connects the entire Mediterranean world.

"Andalusian Morocco" is one volume in an eleven volume series entitled "Islamic Art in the Mediterranean".These volumes are published by a Museum With No Frontiers a unique multi-national cooperative which examines the cultural ties that bind Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. These is the first volume in the series that I have read and I will definitely purchase additional volumes. ... Product Description
The haunting funerary paintings on wood coffins found in Roman Egypt still represent some of the most vivid images that come to us from the ancient world. These paintings were first discovered by Flinders Petrie, father of modern archaeology, in his excavations in the Egyptian Fayum during the 1880s and have rested at University College London for over 100 years. Now, the Petrie Museum is bringing this corpus of paintings to the public in a stunning catalog. Living Images is a beautiful and authoritative presentation of the restored collection that will be an essential reference for scholars and a fascinating read for general audiences. Central to the volume is a complete catalog of the mummy portraits uncovered by Petrie, including full color illustrations and descriptions of technical and stylistic features and iconographic characteristics. To add to the value of the volume, articles describe the process of finding the mummies, explain the place of funerary assemblages in the history of Egyptian burial customs, offer an introduction to Egyptian portrait painting, and explain the conservation issues presented by the coffins. Petrie’s own reflections on his finds are also included. The volume is dedicated to the memory of Egyptologist Barbara Adams and co-sponsored by the Petrie Museum. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Black Country Living Museum (formerly The Black Country Museum) is an open-air museum of rebuilt historic buildings, located in Dudley in the West Midlands of England. The museum occupies a 105,000 square metres (26 acres) urban heritage park in the shadow of Dudley Castle in the centre of the Black Country conurbation. It was first opened in 1978, on land partly reclaimed from a former railway goods yard, disused lime kilns and former coal pits; and since then many more exhibits have been added to it. The Museum preserves some notable buildings from around the Metropolitan Boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall and the City of Wolverhampton; mainly in a specially built village. Most of the buildings are original, relocated from their original sites. As a living museum, these form a base from which volunteers portray life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Museum is constantly changing as new exhibits, especially buildings in the village, are being added. While most of the exhibits are indoors, on a wet day suitable clothing is recommended for walking between buildings. Canal boat at the Black Country Living Museum.A prominent landmark on the Tipton Road passing the main entrance is the frontage of Rolfe Street Baths, relocated from Smethwick. To the left of the main entrance is a more conventional exhibition area with displays of a number of artefacts made in the Black Country. T...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=375646 ... Read more

Excerpt:The U.S. Army Transportation Museum is a United States Army museum of vehicles and other transportation-related equipment and memorabilia. It is located on the grounds of Fort Eustis, Virginia, in Newport News, on the Virginia Peninsula. The museum was established in 1959, in a warehouse using items initially collected for a recruiting exhibit, and got a main building in 1976. An open-air pavilion for aviation exhibits opened in 1987. The buildings, built at a total cost of US$765,000, and other capital improvements are funded by the Army Transportation Museum Foundation (ATMF). Since the foundation is prohibited by law from obtaining state or federal grants, private donations are the only funding source. The museum reflects the history of the Army, especially of the United States Army Transportation Corps, and includes close to 100 military vehicles such as land vehicles, watercraft and rolling stock, including stock from the Fort Eustis Military Railroad. It is officially dedicated to General Frank S. Besson, Jr., who was the first 4 star general to lead the transportation command, and extends over 6 acres (24,000 m) of land, air and sea vehicles and indoor exhibits. The park was established in 1970 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places a year later.Settlers in the mid-1800s near the Verde River grew corn and other crops with the prospect of getting good prices from nearby Prescott , which was the territorial capital, and from nearby miners. The rapid increase in population for the mining economy disrupted the hunting and gathering environments of the local Indian tribes, the Dilzhe'e Apache and Yavapai . In turn, they raided the farmers' crops for food. The farmers requested military protection from the U.S. Army and, in 1865, although Arizona was still only a territory , the Infantry arrived. Excerpt: Fort Snelling, Minnesota - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Fort Snelling in 1844, by John Caspar Wild (Minnesota Historical Society)Lt. Zebulon Pike purchased 100,000 acres (400 km²) of land in the area in 1805, though it was more than a decade before significant settlement took place. Following the War of 1812 the federal government built a chain of forts and installed Indian agents between Lake Michigan and the Missouri River. Their primary purpose was to protect the territory from Canadian and British encroachment. The soldiers at these outposts denied non-U.S. citizens commercial use of the rivers, kept American Indian lands free of white settlement until treaties were signed, enforced law and order, and protected legitimate travelers and traders. In this case, they also attempted to keep the peace between the Ojibwe and Dakota people. The original installation was constructed between 1820 and 1824 as Fort St. Anthony. During construction, the soldiers lived at Camp Coldwater, which provided drinking water to the fort throughout the 19th century. It received its current name upon its completion in 1825 in honor of Colonel Josiah Snelling, who commanded the regiment that built it (the 5th Regiment, United States Infantry), and oversaw its construction. Snelling was considered to be a reasonable commanderwhen he was sober. He was susceptible to becoming angry when ill from chronic dysentery, and he left the installation in September 1827 when recalled to Washington. He died a year later from complications due to dysentery and a "brain fever". 1850 administration buildingThe fort's doctor began taking weather observations in January 1820. Observations have been recorded continuously in the region ever since, giving the Twin Cities one of th... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=150612 ... Read more

Excerpt: Old Sturbridge Village (OSV) is a living museum located in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, in the United States, which re-creates life in rural New England during the 1790s through 1830s (the Romantic Period). It is the largest living museum in New England, covering more than 200 acres (80 hectares). View of the Center Village section of Old Sturbridge Village Prior to European colonization, the Nipmuck people inhabited the Quinnebaug region of which OSV is a part. In the early nineteenth century, the land on which Old Sturbridge Village now stands was a farm owned by David Wight. The farm included a sawmill, gristmill and a millpond which survives to this day. The millpond which still powers these three mills, was dug in 1795. In 1795, David Wight's son went to Boston to conduct some business on behalf of his father. While in Boston he bought some tickets to the Harvard Lottery, which was set up as a fundraising technique for then Harvard College (now Harvard University). He won $5,000. He gave his father money to pay off the mortgage on his farm and logged the timber of the cedar swamp which today is the millpond. After the logging was complete, they dug the pond with a team of oxen and a scoop. This entire process took two and a half years. George Washington Wells started a small spectacle shop in Southbridge, Massachusetts in the 1840s which became the American Optical Company. His three sonsChanning M, Albert B ("AB"), and J Cheney Wellsfollowed him into the business, which continued to expand. In 1926, AB began to shop for antiques. This influenced Cheney to collect early American timepieces and ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2619314 ... Read more

Excerpt: Skansen is the first open air museum and zoo in Sweden and is located on the island Djurgården in Stockholm, Sweden. It was founded in 1891 by Artur Hazelius (1833-1901) to show the way of life in the different parts of Sweden before the industrial era. The 19th century was a period of great change throughout Europe and Sweden was no exception. Its rural way of life was rapidly giving way to an industrialized society and many feared that the country's many traditional customs and occupations may be lost to history. Artur Hazelius, who had previously founded the Nordic Museum on the island of Djurgården near the centre of Stockholm, was inspired by the open-air museum founded by King Oscar II in Kristiania in 1881 when he created his open-air museum on the hill that dominates the island. Skansen became the model for other early open-air museums in Scandinavia and later ones elsewhere. The name "Skansen" has also been used as a noun to refer to other open-air museums and collections of historic structures, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, but also in the United States, e.g. Old World Wisconsin and Fairplay, Colorado. Skansen was originally a part of the Nordic Museum, but became an independent organization in 1963. The objects in the Skansen buildings are still the property of the Nordic Museum. After extensive travelling, Hazelius bought around 150 houses from all over the country (as well as one structure from Telemark in Norway) and had them shipped piece by piece to the museum, where they were rebuilt to provide a un...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=746634 ... Excerpt: Pleasant Hill, Kentucky -Centre Family Dwelling, once home to over 100 Shakers, was constructed of limestone quarried from the top of the palisades of the Kentucky River. On January 1, 1805, with eleven Shaker communities already established in New York and New England, three Shaker missionaries set out to find new converts among the pioneers then pouring into the western lands by way of Cumberland Gap and the Ohio. By August, they had gathered a small group of new adherents to the doctrine of Mother Ann Lee, many of whom had earlier been influenced by the fervent Cane Ridge Revival. In December 1806, forty-four converts of legal age signed a covenant agreeing to mutual support and the common ownership of property. The community began living together on the 140 acres (57 ha) farm of Elisha Thomas. Additional converts were quickly added, and the property swelled to 4,369 acres (1,768 ha). By 1812 three communal familiesEast, Center, and Westhad been formed, and a fourth, North, was established as a "gathering family" for prospective converts. On June 2, 1814, 128 Believers bound themselves together in a more formal covenant that established the community in the pattern of the Mother Colony in New Lebanon, New York. Staircase in Trustees' Office The Second Great Awakening or Kentucky Revivals began at the end of the 18th century and continued into the early years of the 19th century. The Kentucky Revival was characterized by large camp meetings where ministers from various religious groups would preach for long periods. These meetings sometimes drew thousands of observers to the religious gatherings in the Ohio Valley of Kentucky. This powerful intere...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=859117 ... Read more
