Good for beginners, too basic for more advanced people
I got this book for a livestock management class, glanced through it, and never looked at it again.It goes through how to handle all sorts of different animals, which is great for beginners, but way too basic if you've already worked with them.I wouldn't waste your money on it unless you are an absolute beginner in the animal science world.

clear illustrations, directions and descriptions
I loved this book when I used it for class, and kept it for reference afterwards.I really liked how direct and clear the infomation was, I felt that if the need arose, I would be able to appropriately execute a new restraint, etc based on this book.It has a good deal of very relevant information, especially for someone who might not be as familiar with handling a species, for instance a cow person who needs to help someone with their swine.And for someone who might not have been around livestock, there is a lot to learn as well with plenty of illustrations so even if you are still learning the terminology you can see what is being described. ... Great book, but expensive as all hell
This is a really good, thorough livestock book. It covers more than a vet tech student will ever need to know about food animal production.

Having said all that, it's way too expensive for a mostly black and white book printed on cheap paper that's one step above newsprint in quality.

The only way someone would fork over 140 bucks for this thing is if they were forced to by an instructor.

If you have to spend 140 bucks on a damned textbook, at least this is a good one. ... Read more

Skaggs's book is an excellent synthesis of the history of American meat production from earliest times to the present.Skaggs covers the earlydays, the rise of the trailing industry, the growth of big packing townslike Chicago and Kansas City, scandals like "embalmed beef" inthe war with Spain and the "beef trust", and all the twists andturns that have led to the way things are produced today.Full ofinteresting facts and details, this book also tells the story of thelifecycle of an important American industry that still looms large in ourimaginations.As Skaggs shows, however, imagination tends to run away fromreality.For all you romantics out there, just remember that even at theheight of the cattle trail days, most cattle were raised by farmers.(Ibet you won't be seeing that coming out of Hollywood anytime soon.)Ihighly recommend reading this book in conjunction with Upton Sinclair's"The Jungle". ...
