5-0 out of 5 stars Books & Reading
Because of my professional career, I collect quotation books about reading and literacy. And this collection by Bill Bradfield is the best I've found to date. Yes, he's got the standard oldies by folks like Emerson, Erasmus, and Shaw but he's also included up-to-date quotations from the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Malcolm X, and Stephen King. Granted, he included me in the list but I didn't need it -- I already knew what I said. At the price, it's the best bargain in quote books for anyone in education or libraries. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for the Jane Austen Fan in your Life!
This book is a well-written, delightful compilation of entertaining quotes on Jane Austen that makes a perfect gift that is enjoyable reading after reading. The introduction is particularly charming and full of insight into the life of one of our most cherished authors. Jennifer Adams should be commended for her passion in bringing this lovely little book to life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Austen quotes
Some quotes from the book:

"One of Jane Austen's greatest talents is that she presents sexual tension with such subtlety."

"For all the body's powers and vulnerability, [Austen's:] novels demonstrate that, for her, the real dance of life lies in language and in understanding."

"Each of us has a private Austen."

This was a wonderful collection of quotes on Austen and her works. This book even throws in the criticism and condemnation quotes! Yes, I can't believe they're out there! Great read for Austen fans everywhere!

4-0 out of 5 stars fun to read
If you love Jane Austen like I do, you will love this little book. It will bring more than one smile to your face. Thanks, Jennifer Adams!

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing
This could have been a great book for Jane aficionados, but it is simply a book of quotations by various authors and filmmakers. Aside from a very large print not-quite 3-page intro, there is no insight or background on Jane Austen--her life and work, her personality and the time in which she lives. The book does not answer the central question of why did she affect so many writers and readers so deeply. Still, it is a sweetly designed gift book and as the other reviews attest, those who love Jane will love anything about her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkably Jane: Notable Quotations on Jane Austen
What a deliciously lovely little gem this is!It charmingly offers a little mix of everything from "effusive praise" to "mild disdain" with some wickedly humorous notations by a varying range of Austen lovers and loathers! 5-0 out of 5 stars Oscar Wilde is still hip and fab
Wit and Wisdom is just it!I took to bringing this book with me to work-- it is good for a smile.Oscar Wilde wrote some awfully enlightened things--this book is terrific!

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun little read
This is a very slim little volume of Oscar Wile's more well-known quotations. I'ts just a fun little read and may be a useful reference when writing and you need a accurate Wilde quote. I keep mine around and many folks who visit just like thumbing through it. It can be a conversations starter. This is not a biography of Wilde's life and works.

4-0 out of 5 stars Small but fun
This book was a little smaller than I expected but if you are a Wilde fan you will certainly enjoy it!

Some of the controversial quotes are sure to get a response if you try them as Facebook status messages. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Very intersting little book...
...not as much to it as I had thought and the cover of mine was not as shown here but..the book I ordered was used and probably an older Dover edition. BUT that doesnt matter. You get nothing but great quotes and thoughts here from one of the geniuses of literature.
Thin book. Not very much to read but nice to own and refer to. Memorable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Resource
Oscar Wilde was one of the most brilliant men to ever live and his oeuvre definitely deserves a quote book of its own. I realize that he has several but I bought this one recently and on the cheap (I got mine used from a z shop). Here the great playwright's observations are subdivided into chapters concerning men, women, marriage, youth, sin, religion, journalism, wealth, England, America etc. It's a concise collection but contains nearly 60 pages of priceless insight. Wilde sums up a large amount of human nature almost effortlessly via the words of the characters found in his works. In fact, if you ever need a source regarding just about anything cultural he's a wonderful authority. It's too bad he did not live in our times as his irreverence would have been better appreciated and celebrated--at least by those of us who are not politically correct. Rest in Peace, hero. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting & Useful Dictionary of Shakespeare's Themes.
THE ARDEN DICTIONARY OF SHAKESPEARE QUOTATIONS.Compiled by Jane Armstrong.396 pp.London : Thomson Learning, 2000 (1999).

The present compilation contains 3000 quotations, both well-known and lesser-known, from Shakespeare's plays and poems. The quotations vary in length from short sentences such as "For he was great of heart," through to longer passages such as Hamlet's soliloquy, "To be or not to be," which can run to almost a page or more. Most quotations, however, are quite short, and many consist only of "a strikingly expressed thought or resonant phrase" such as "Do you smell a fault?"

Speaker, addressee, and act/scene/line references are keyed to the Arden Shakespeare series, and some are followed by brief annotations which help clarify the context. The book is rounded out with a 4-page Life of Shakespeare; a 12-page Glossary; an extensive 45-page Keyword Index; and an Index of References to Plays.

In her Preface, Editor Jane Armstrong writes that, as in "the 'commonplace books' in which Shakespeare's contemporaries recorded memorable extracts from their reading," her book has been organized by topic - e.g., ABSENCE, DESIRES, GUILT, HASTE, LOVE - since she feelsthat this "often clearly reveals the concentration round a subject ina particular play; and ... sometimes shows ideas recurring through Shakespeare's work, either in similar form or in a progression from the more straightforwardly expressed to the increasingly complex and embedded" (pp. xi-xii).

The book, in other words, has been designed to serve a twofold purpose - primarily as a commonplace book or compilation of themes, and onlysecondarily as a dictionary - and because it contains only 3000 quotations readers are occasionally not going to find what they may belooking for.

I was surprised, for example, to discover that a key linefrom 'Titus Andronicus' -"When will this fearful slumber have anend?" -has not been included. In fact, SLUMBER doesn't even appearas a topic, since the single line containing it has been subsumed under SLEEP.I was also, until I carefully read Armstrong's Preface, surpised to find that, although there are twenty "heart" quotations, HEART itself does not appear as a topic.

To locate the line "For he was great of heart," which has been included under the topic NOBILITY, you will have to search the Keyword Index. In other words, if you are searching for a particular line you shouldFIRST CHECK THE KEYWORD INDEX, since the book has not been arranged asa dictionary of words but as a commonplace book of topics or themes, anda more accurate (and less misleading) title for it would have been 'TheArden Commonplace Book of Shakespeare Quotations' or 'The Arden Dictionary of Shakespeare's Themes.'

A truly complete 'dictionary' that would perfectly satisfy all readers and in which we would all find all of our favorite passages and lines could of course only take the form of a rearrangement of Shakespeare's complete works, something clearly impracticable in a handy-sized book of just 396 pages.

Within its limits, and given its aims, I've found that in use the Arden compilation is an interesting book that does a fairly good job on the whole. Many of my favorite lines are there, though others aren't,but in compensation I've been guided to interesting new lines and have enjoyed exploring certain themes. The main frustration I've encounteredis that many passages seem too truncated, and I would have liked to have seen more of the poetic context. But this of course would have meant a much larger book.

The book is bound in a decorative glossy wrapper, stitched, well-printed on good thin paper, and is quite a handsome production. As a small 8vo in size (8 by 5 inches) it's not too big, has a nice look and feel toit, and is easy to consult and read.Although it isn't perfect (what is?), I'd say it's a useful (though occasionally frustrating) reference that will also provide interesting browsing material for the Shakespeare enthusiast.

In sum, this is a book with many attractive features, but don't expectto find everything you look for in it : only a Complete Shakespeare or perhaps something like the Schmidt Lexicon could provide that. And to avoid the possibility of confusion, don't forget to read Jane Armstrong's Preface, in which she makes it perfectly clear that this book is _not_ primarily a dictionary of words. It's intended to be something more interesting!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Bargain
The price is right for this well-indexed, well-organized reference. It boasts 3,000 entries and all are in a logical context. The print is adequately sized and the margins are wide. There are no annotations, which would have been helpful.

My problem with the book is the selection of quotes. Many famous quotes do not appear, and some very obscure ones do.It could be the authors wanted to stay off the beaten track, and draw attention to the less familiar. The result is quotes you don't particularly want to quote. It seems as if a computerized word-search was done, and this was the outcome.

Surprisingly, there are not too many Shakespearian Quotation Dictionaries available. If you wish to have such a reference, you will not find many alternatives.I would give Arden's a lukewarm recommendation in that it could fulfill a need, and there are not many choices.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Shakespearean quotation book out there!
This book is well-organized, nicely printed with the headings in large bold letters. This makes finding a quote under a specific topic easy.I am using it for my college Shakespeare class.BUY THIS BOOK over any of the others. ... Read more
