Product Description
This is the first book to examine the literary history of the United States in terms of the chronological occurrence of significant events and activities. This comprehensive volume lists the dates of birth and death of literary figures, important historical facts, and the authors and titles of works published for each year, from Colonial times to the present. The compiler's introduction offers an interesting and informative discussion of how, from little more than a list of author's titles, and events, we may observe a year in the history of a nation, through the political, scientific, and social developments that fired the imaginations of America's writers, and fed the appetites of a growing reading public. ... Product Description
Despite protestations to the contrary, myth criticism did not die with modernism: witness the more than 1000 illuminating sources in this reference book culled from thousands more published in the post-modernist era between 1970 and 1990. Seven authors, each a specialist in a literary period, have selected and carefully annotated recent critical works, some proceeding from traditional pyschological or anthropological stances and others taking new directions. The opening chapter surveys work done on the mythic or archetypal approach in general; the second chapter covers materials on myth in classical literature; and the following chapters correspond to periods in British and American literature. Included are general studies, studies of particular authors, and a subject index. ... Read more

Product Description
This work discusses the relationship between film and literature, explaining and evaluating the issues most frequently raised on the subject. It also lists nearly 2,500 articles and books published from 1908 to 1985 on the comparison of film to drama, fiction, and poetry. These comparisons arose shortly after the first appearance of moving pictures as writers attempted to establish the differences between movies and drama. The study has since grown into a significant scholarly concern. ... Read more

Product Description
This annotated bibliography of 19th-century literature by and about American textile factory workers examines 457 texts, including novels, short fiction, poetry, drama, narratives, and children's literature, and offers new insights into 19th-century working-class culture. The textile industry was the premier and largest 19th-century industry in the United States. The texts, drawn from a variety of publications, such as workers' periodicals, mainstream publishers' monographs, newspapers, magazines, story papers, dime novels, pulp publications, and Sunday-school tracts, reveal the variety and complexity of the factory literature and represent the largest body of American working-class women's literature. The literature explores a number of women's concerns, such as their roles as workers, sexual harassment, marriage, motherhood, and homo-affectional and heterosexual relationships, and treats the factory work experience of hundreds of thousands of 19th-century children. Annotations are divided among fourteen topical chapters that highlight such key issues as women's independence, class bias, child labor, technology, and protest. Most entries include information on text availability, including microform reprints and U.S. library holdings for rare titles. ... Read more

Product Description
This unique bibliography surveys works for children written by literary figures usually studied in colleges and universities. While Apseloff concentrates on authors in the literary field, prominent philosophers and historians are examined as well. She identifies the major adult literary figures who produced works for children or whose adult work has subsequently been adapted for children. Although the emphasis is on American and British literary figures, such as Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, D.H. Lawrence, C.S. Lewis, Oscar Wilde, and Robert Browning, among others, the book also includes Tolstoy, Voltaire, Lorca, Cervantes, and other continental writers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As invaluable to mythology as the OED is to English studies.
This set of books classify all known myths and folk tales, in terms of both story and motif. Invariably, any book analyzing myths will simply use Thompson's notation (Aa ###) whenever placing the myths discussed in a multi-cultural or syncretic context. For an understanding of Thompson's work rather than referencing the literally encyclopedic result, see _Types_of_the_Folktale_. ... Read more

The book collects, selects, identifies, and classifies all specimens of American Gothic literary activity from its initial expression at the end of the 18th century in the novels of Charles Brockden Brown, to the writings of the modern masters such as H. P. Lovecraft, Shirley Jackson, Joyce Carol Oates, and Stephen King. Product Description

This index is intended primarily for the use of students of folklore and custom and of comparative literature. To this end, the references to early Irish or Hiberno-Latin sources are frequently supplemented by references to modern scholarly works in which motifs found in Celtic are cited for purposes of comparative study in various fields of literary or cultural history, such as mediaeval romance. A few references to early Welsh documents have also been added, and, though no effort has been made to cover modern Irish folklore, scattered references to that field have also been inserted. To insure as wide usefulness as possible, preference is given to translations contained in books of relatively easy accessibility, and more than one reference is frequently given to different translations of a single motif.-- from the Preface
