This paper describes a methodology for modelling light pollution using geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technology. The proposed approach attempts to address the issue of environmental assessment in sensitive suburban areas. The modern way of life in developing countries is conductive to environmental degradation in urban and suburban areas. One specific parameter for this degradation is light pollution due to intense artificial night lighting. This paper aims to assess this parameter for the Athens metropolitan area, using modern analytical and data capturing technologies. For this purpose, night-time satellite images and analogue maps have been used in order to create the spatial database of the GIS for the study area. Using GIS advanced analytical functionality, visibility analysis was implemented. The outputs for this analysis are a series of maps reflecting direct and indirect light pollution around the city of Athens. Direct light pollution corresponds to optical contact with artificial night light sources, while indirect light pollution corresponds to optical contact with the sky glow above the city. Additionally, the assessment of light pollution in different periods allows for dynamic evaluation of the phenomenon. Effects of oxygen on the release and distribution of phosphorus (P) in the sediments in the presence of light were investigated, using sediment cores and overlying water from Lake Taihu, in China. The results show that P can be released from sediments to the overlying water in both anoxic and aerobic conditions. But more P was released in the anoxic condition. The transformation of P between various fractions in the sediments was observed during the release experiments. Concentrations of Ca-bound P and organic P in the sediments decreased in both conditions, but Fe/Al-bound P increased in the aerobic condition. The decrease of total P and P fractions in the sediments is consistent with the accumulative increase in quantity (AIQ) of total P (TP) in the overlying water, but is contrary with the AIQ of dissolved inorganic P. This is due to the uptake of algae by the dissolved inorganic P. Total nitrogen in the sediments in the anoxic condition was lower than that in the aerobic condition, and pH in the overlying water increased in the anoxic condition. ... Read more

In order to understand the influence of dust and anthropogenic pollution aerosols on regional climate in East Asia, we analyzed the aerosol optical, chemical and physical properties for two cases with high aerosol loading and assessed the radiative forcing of these cases. The 1st case study is a heavy dust episode (DE) in April (during ACE-Asia) 2001 and the 2nd case is a regional-scale pollution event in November 2001. The Angstrom exponent (A) for DE was 0.38 from sunphotometer measurements. The mean single scattering albedo (550nm) at the surface reported during the pollution episode (PE, 0.88) was lower than that of DE (0.91). The concentrations of organic (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) measured during the PE were about 90% and 30% higher than DE. The aerosol mass scattering efficiency (@a"s) of PE is a factor of about 2 higher than that of the DE. The difference in the mass absorption efficiency (@a"a) of EC during DE and PE is small and within the measurement uncertainty. The diurnally averaged aerosol radiative forcing efficiency (@DDFE, Wm^-^2@t^-^1) during DE is similar to results of other studies at Gosan. ... Read more

We developed and installed a scientific payload on-board an ultra-light aircraft dedicated to ozone, nitrogen oxides and aerosol-scattering profilers to study the spatial distribution of pollution in the Chamonix and Maurienne valleys (French Alps). Meteorological parameters (temperature, pressure and relative humidity) and altimetry (GPS measurements) were recorded simultaneously. A synergy of measurements has been ensured with a ground mobile station equipped with a new lidar emitting at 532nm. The experiment undertaken in January 2003 during the daytime allowed us to document, for the first time, the pollution level on horizontal and vertical scales during typical winter situations in the Alps valleys. Our results show a strong inversion of temperature up to about 150+/-50m above the valley bottom, in the Chamonix valley, which traps the pollutants close to the snow-covered surface. Their concentrations are thus closely linked to the proximity of their sources and seem to have a local influence. In the Maurienne valley, with a bottom surface mostly free of snow, more efficient mixing due to convection is observed and a multi-layer structure between the planetary boundary layer and the free troposphere is detected on lidar vertical profiles. These lidar measurements allow a characterization of valley aerosols, with a backscatter to extinction ratio of ~0.028sr^-^1 very close to the value retrieved during the INDian Ocean EXperiment for a mixing of aerosols from biomass and fossil fuel burning. ...
