Note: Book is about Flash 5, not FlashMX or Flash Remoting
This isn't a criticism of the book, but pay attention that it's from 2001 and covers Flash 5, NOT the latest Flash MX and its available Flash Remoting technology which offers far easier server-side integration.

Still, the info in the book still has value today to those who have not yet bought Flash MX.Indeed, even if you have Flash Mx, if your server is Perl, PHP, CF5, etc, then the approaches here will work since the new Flash Remoting only works on CFMX, ASP.NET, and select J2EE platforms.

Then again, MX users who do get the book should check out the newer LoadVars object as an alternative to the older but still supported LoadVariables. The approach to processing XML is also vastly improved in MX.

Of course, the book can't be faulted for having come out prior to MX. It's just that since the title doesn't say Flash 5, if you buy the book thinking it's about the latest and greatest ways of doing Flash/server integration, you'd likely be disappointed. Just offering this as a caution.

At Last , a book even a designer can understand.
As a graphics person, I've tried for months to understand scripting and databases with no success, I was just about to throw in the towel and literally go back to the drawing board when I found this book.The authors make these subjects easy to understand and the tutorials are excellent for bridging the graphic person's need to see the concepts in action.I've never written a review before, but this book has finally made me understand and given me the tools to move forward.

A sparse overview
When I buy a book, I want a little depth. This book is a decent summary of the Flash backend, but it's nothing you can't readily find on the web. I HIGHLY recommend a more specific approach--e.g Foundation PHP for Flash by Webster .

A complete and easy steps book
This book is awesome; it explains how to use Flash integration with the most common used server-side programming languages (PHP, ASP and Perl)...

All separated by parts, and it explains some of the functions and methods of the programming languages, just for letting the reader who doesn't deal with certain server-side languages more confortable to understand it.

Really good book, it solved all my problems with database and server integration with Flash.

Absolutely Brilliant!
A massive treasure trove of information that has just saved me countless hours of messing around with Flash. I've read through the first 5 chapters and went through the included examples and that alone has been enough to make me feel comfortable selling backend integration to my clients now, and being able to deliver a Flash site that does more than just look and sound good. There's no ColdFusion here but at five grand for Cold Fusion Sevrver, I'll take the PHP/SQL,ASP,and Perl solutions detailed in this book any day of the week over a book trying to sell me on CF.

It appears someone is falsifying reviews for this book. Most of the reviews are written in broken or odd english. Most reviewers have either reviewed no other products or have only reviewed other products by the publisher. Not sure what's going on here but very very suspicious. Buyer beware.

After sitting all day, for 12 hours with my eyes into the monitor do you think I am in the mood to write contracts? Do you think I am in the mood to do anything? My wife always said that I worked too much. Well After buying this book I used to have more free time because all the contracts I had to create were her. Now I have more time for myself and less money spent on lawyers or assistants.

It's very annoying for a programmer like me to deal with paperwork. We aren't used to do paperwork! We need a straight line with everything we need so this book is the best thing a programmer who deals with contracts can buy!

Fantastic to get you started with BitTorrent
I've always been a fan of "For Dummies" books. I can't get enough of them, and learning there was one of these titles about BitTorrent made my day, since I had been very much in the dark about this technology... in general in the dark about anything remotely related to Peer-to-Peer for more than three years. So I gave the book by Susannah Gardner and Kris Krug a shot, and it was all that I expected.

After a primer on the technology, the purpose of BitTorrent in the spectrum of peer-to-peer protocols out there and tools to find, download and manage torrents, the book deals head on with the copyright implications of downloading illegal torrents, offering resources to help find legal (and fun) torrent material.

While a few of the chapters were about topics that were slightly peripheral to the main subject (production and promotion of torrents, for instance), the bulk of the book was fantastic for the newbie (a.k.a. ME!) to get on the know about BitTorrent and start getting my first streams of torrent juice flowing into my machine's hard drive. [...]

easy to use client
Gardner describes the basic idea behind BitTorrent. How someone downloading runs a BitTorrent client that can in turn upload portions of a file to another client. This is the distinguishing characteristic of the network, as realised by Bram Cohen.

You can see from the book that the client is easy to obtain from various websites, and easy to set up and run. The etiquette is that if you download a file, that you should keep your client connected to the net. So that it can answer quests from others. Which is probably how you were able to quickly get the file in the first place.

While the book advises that you should not download copyrighted material like movies, one has to wonder how many readers will actually desist.

Complete Users Manual With Additional Information
Napster was a program/company/concept that excited millions of people before it blew up because of violating copyright laws. Other organizations such as KaZaA came in to do the same thing but were careful to not violate the copyright laws that got Napster. The critical thing was that Napster facilitated illegal copying by providing users with technical support. Huh? you might well be saying, but this comes from Chapter 6 on Understanding BitTorrent and the Law.

BitTorrent is a freeware package (but the developer will accept donations) that facilitates peer to peer file sharing. It is perfectly legal to use for the copying of non-copyrighted material. This book, like most of the 'For Dummies' books is a complete introduction to using the software and includes a lot of extra comments on sites that have BitTorrent materials for downloading, on searching for additional content, on using BitTorrent for distribution of materials inside large organizations.

Like with most of their books, it is well written, covers the material well, and is quite complete.

BitTorrent is one of those file-sharing technologies that I've heard about but never really understood.To remedy that, I got a review copy of BitTorrent For Dummies by Susannah Gardner and Kris Krug.I now understand why this is such a better architecture than others...

Now the first thing that comes to mind when discussing peer-to-peer software for file sharing is the illegal downloading of copyrighted software.Gardner and Krug make sure that the reader has *no* defense along the lines of "I didn't know it was wrong".They do a great job in explaining the laws, why downloading certain material is illegal, and how to find sites that have legal content for downloading.That won't stop people from using it to get the latest Madonna single or video, but you've been warned.After that's out of the way, they explain how BitTorrent works and how your behavior when using the software affects all other users.After reading the book, I now know all about seeds, swarms, and leeches.I also know where to go to start using BitTorrent for accessing and distributing my own material.

The only "problem" I have with the book is with Part 3.It's on how to create video and audio material like podcasts or home videos that can be digitized and stored online.It really isn't material that's specific to BitTorrent usage, and it will only appeal to people who want to create content to share with others.In fact, I've seen much of this material covered in books on podcasting, and it seems to make more sense in a book like that.I think that if you already want to create content, BitTorrent isn't going to be your driving technology like podcasting might be.It's not bad material...I just don't think I would have included it here.

Basically, an interesting book on a technology that is redefining how content is controlled and distributed in the digital world.If you want to know how to make it part of your world, it's worth reading... ... Read more

Digital Evidence Book
The book arrived within the specified time and was found to be in excellent condition.

Great for Lawyer and Police
If you are a lawyer or a police detective with some IT background it is one of the greatest book you can find to improve significantly your skills on evidence searching in the modern world where computers are part of day life of most, including law offenders and their victims.

Be aware this is not a text on "computer crime". Eventually it will include something on this subject, but its focus is "general" crime evidence searching.

On the other hand, if you have strong IT background you will find this book something like a tutorial and missing lots of "more advanced" possibilities, but can be useful for some initial hints to some techniques to be developed in other place.

Forensic computing from a law enforcement perspective
This is a textbook that deals with forensic computing from a law enforcement perspective.Divided into five distinct parts, it provides a thorough overview of computer crime laws, forensic methodology, and the process of investigating computer crime.

Fundamental procedures such as obtaining warrants prior to search and seizure, maintaining chain of custody, preserving and documenting the evidence, using multiple sources of corroborating evidence to establish important facts, and testifying in court are introduced in part one.

The next two parts cover the technical aspects of investigating criminal activity involving standalone computer systems and computer networks, respectively.These chapters discuss the technology at a fairly basic level and can be safely skimmed or skipped by readers familiar with the material from other forensic books, which tend to cover it in greater detail.

A very good introduction to SAP Treasury and Cash Management
Please, do not stop on the title of this book that would lead you thinking that it is only about SOX compliance ... This book is, to my knowledge, the only available public resource that presents you the general functionalities of SAP for Treasury and Risk Management (with the exception of the V4.6 C documentation freely downloadable on the internet, interesting but "heavy" to read and no longer up-to-date regarding some topics). Moreover, it describes the cash management part - electronic bank statement management, tresury payments, cash concentration, cash planning and forecasting which are not at all treated in "SAP Treasury and Risk Management" - the other(recommended)book from SAP Press USA (translated from the German edition) that covers far more in depth the Forex, Money Market, Interest Rates and Risk Management tools offered by SAP...

Although written for the use of SAP in the US environment, it is a highly recommended reading for all SAP consultants and Treasury Specialists that want to have knowledge of what SAP can do regarding Cash and Treasury Management based in Europe, Asia-Pacific or Africa and Middle East.

One comment: it is a little bit shameful that SAP Press Germany has not yet decided to translate in English the German titles relating to the Financial Supply Chain Management and In-House Cash modules together with the one dedicated to Liquidity Calculation and Forecasting ... This would greatly help having a better knowledge of SAP potential regarding global cash and in-house banking management outside of Germany. I have told this to a member of the SAP Corporate Treasury (using of course all SAP treasury and cash modules) last year during a Treasury and Cash Management seminar in Europe... but so far nothing has been done. Out of date, but still many good tips here.
An unavoidable problem with writing any tech book is how quickly they get outdated, and this book is no exception.Saying that the first part of the book on general time management skills is still highly relevant and usable, its only in the last part of the book which goes into more specific software that the book shows its age.

Nicely formatted so its very easy to skip outdated sections, or just those sections that are not relevant to you.The book is also written in a clear and concise manner that is easy to follow.I still give the book high marks because those early on tips, like handing my inbox and keeping it empty, were so valuable I have had a noticeable improvement inmy work productivity and other aspects of my life as well.

This book is packed with tons of great ideas and tricks to get more done and understand why you own a computer, which sometimes is hard to answer. I highly recommend it.

This book is about what Gina told in an [...] blog, the three things she would teach in a Lifehacker MBA course would be:
- how to install a personal organization system,
- how automate repetitive tasks,
- how to firewall your attention.

Tips in the book are on the Lifehacker website; however, it is much easier to digest. I have read the book while travelling, identified the hacks I wanted to implement, and made a small to do list from the Table of Contents. Then, back at my PC, I just implemented those I felt interesting.

There are tips for life in general (i.e. without computer), and there are many tips to improve on computer usage. Differences for Windows and Macintosh are highlighted. The book is very practical and easy to understand, which doesn't mean it is light on content. There are easy to do hacks, but there are hacks for the very advanced computer user, too.

Among all hacks, the most important to me is that I have completely changed how I deal with e-mail. I have implemented the Search style instead of Organizing in folders style, and changed how I respond to e-mails. Before e-mailing was time consuming and energy intensive, now it is quick and fun.

Some of the tips I have implemented became daily routine to me in such a way, that I only realize reading the book that they come from this book.

Finally, there is just some great fun about reading about a nice hack, even without implementing, it makes me think more creatively.

Worth its weight in iPhones
I was a big fan of the first edition of Gina's LifeHacker."Upgrade Your Life" is the expanded, revised, resized and renamed Second Edition, which should make it more accessible to the self-described "non-hacker."

The book's new dimensions and title make it look less like a computer book and more like the self-improvement book that it is.To the uninitiated, "lifehacker" sounds like something Dr. Frankenstein dabbled in, where "upgrade your life" could have come from Tony Robbins.These are small changes, but "small changes" for improving your productivity is what this book is all about.

The book is not designed to read front to back.Each "hack" has a a "level/platform/cost" header, which I find helpful, but I would have liked to have some or all of this info in the table of contents.Otherwise, the ToC is excellent, organizing the Hacks by productivity type ("Clear your mind," "firewall your attention") and descriptive Hacks and subtopics of each hack. At times, just reading the ToC is enough to set off the "a ha!" reaction and make a difference. For example, "remember 100 different passwords with one rule set" was enough to change my approach to passwords, even before I'd read the full text.

Many of the tips are simple common sense, which we can often miss because of habits we've already built up.Other tips introduce useful applications like Remember the Milk, or remind you of features your phone already has (Hack 72, "Access web apps and search via text message").

Gina is an excellent writer; her LifeHacker.com site remains a daily read.A lot of these tips have been covered on the site before, but having them available in compact, physical form is particularly helpful when I'm stuck on a project or assignment and need to make a mental break.Just learning something new and practicing it for a few minutes often helps me get back into the productive zone.

Don't waste your money
Unless you like to read long examples of fictitious patent applications which are then dismissed by the authors as unpatentable for unsurprising reasons such as "there was prior art", don't buy this book.
