Product Description

The chapters in this book are intended to describe what is known and what is not known (but needs to be known) in several specific areas of childhood abuse. The opening interview with Roland Summit gives readers an opportunity to get acquainted with a pioneer in the field. An instrumental force in the study of child sexual abuse, Summit has indelibly impacted the work of the remaining authors and the field in general. The interview provides a personal and historical view of the development of the field and identifies problems and issues all professionals should be prepared to deal with.

A beginning chapter looks at the development of child sexual abuse research. Internationally recognized scholars, practitioners, and thinkers have based their contributions on both research and practice experience. Each author emphasizes the most critical unknowns in his or her area, reflecting on the subject much as Dr. Summit might have in the early days of finding out the now "knowns."Chapters focus on sexual offenders, children’s memory, adult memory for trauma, children as victims, treatment challenges of traumatized victims, victims in court, and treatment of dissociate identity clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide to the Perplexed
A surprisingly fresh and impressively comprehensive guide to the convoluted process of custody evaluations. The need for these court-mandated evaluations arises when one of the parents - often, the father - is a repeat offender, an abuser.

Abusers are thought by practitioners of psychology to be emotionally disturbed, the twisted outcomes of a history of familial violence and childhood traumas. They are typically diagnosed as suffering from a personality disorder, an inordinately low self-esteem, or codependence coupled with an all-devouring fear of abandonment. Consummate abusers use the right vocabulary and feign the appropriate "emotions" and affect and, thus, sway the evaluator's judgment.

As Lundy Bancroft correctly observes, Confronted with this contrast between a polished, self-controlled, and suave abuser and his harried casualties - it is easy to reach the conclusion that the real victim is the abuser, or that both parties abuse each other equally. The prey's acts of self-defense, assertiveness, or insistence on her rights are interpreted as aggression, lability, or a mental health problem.

The book draws attention to these pitfalls and provides a through description of the system and its protagonists. Sam Vaknin, author of "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited".

5-0 out of 5 stars a must for all....

Product Description

This expanded and updated Second Edition of Legal Issues in Child Abuse and Neglect Practice offers a state-of-the-art exploration of what role the law can play in bettering the lives of victimized children. This new edition continues to provide vital information to non-lawyers on how the legal system in the United States works in child abuse cases.

Product Description
The recent onslaught of disclosures by children who report being sexually abused creates a dilemma for all of us, but especially for those who must make policy-orientated decisions about children. On the one hand one wants to trust children, on the other it is important to honour the rights of the accused. It is also important to protect those children who have been sexually abused from a further type of abuse if they testify in court.

The Child Witness, written by two psychologists with legal training, is the first book oriented towards professionals who seek an integrated, up-to-date review of psychological research and recent court cases dealing with children as witnesses in court. It is organized around four issues: the competence of children as witnesses, the credibility of children, the rights of children and the rights of the accused. Child and adolescent development is reviewed from a psychological perspective. Recent research on issues of comprehension, memory and communication skills of children are described alongside the reactions of various audiences - lawyers, judges and jurors - to the children's credibility. Procedures designed to reduce the traumatization of children who testify in court, including various techniques which have already been employed, are described and evaluated.

The book also includes some recommendations for policy; it will be of interest to all professionals from judges to social workers; it will also interest academic criminologists as it discusses the most up-to-date research.

35. Children's Welfare and the Law: The Limits of Legal Intervention

Editorial Review

Product Description
In this timely and controversial book, Michael King and Judith Trowell uncover a growing concern that the real needs of children are being obscured by the very legal system which claims to protect their interests.

The authors identify a link between the law's colonization of child welfare and the steady depletion of resources throughout the 1980s. Drawing upon a wealth of case histories, they highlight the limitations of the law as an institution for promoting children's welfare, arguing that many cases need never come to court if adequate preventative facilities were made available. The authors use the experience of other countries to demonstrate how, when the legal system is not used as the principal definer of child welfare issues, conflicts can be minimized and resources more firmly directed at promoting the well-being of children and their families.

Following recent legislative changes in England and Wales which aim to set the agenda for child welfare law in the 1990s, this important and at times uncomfortable book challenges the very assumptions on which this legislation is founded. It will have wide repercussions throughout the legal and child welfare fields.

Written in a lively and accessible style, Children's Welfare and the Law offers evidence and insight which will be of immense value to students and professionals in social work, law, child mental health and social administration and to all those involved in promoting children's welfare.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Mother Should Read This Book
Information is power, and this book provides the reader with an incredible amount information.I was stunned to learn the depth of manipulation and deceit that a child molester uses on victims, family members, friends and community. After reading this book I know that as my 2 year old daughter grows up she will be much safer because of what I have learned.I agree with the review that said the "grooming behaviors" section of this book is especially important reading for any parent.

It seems that no one wants to talk about child molestation... it's an unpleasant subject that most folks prefer to just ignore (unfortunately until confronted directly with it).In this country we emphasize "stranger danger" but the fact is that 9 out of 10 children will be molested by a family member or a trusted family friend. It's not that uncommon to hear people say that child molesters should be imprisoned for life, or even get the death penalty... that is until they find out the molester is someone in their family or a valued community member. Then the denial and excuses start to kick in.How can we, as parents, place the fate and precious hearts of our children in the hands of denial and excuses simple because WE feel uncomfortable with a subject?I, for one, refuse to do that.If you have children you must wake up and look at the facts.Only honesty, information, directness and diligence can prevent our children from being victims of this horrible crime. In this book you will learn that, and then will learn the skills you need to address this issue under any circumstance - - whether you have been abused, know someone who is an abuser, want to prevent it from happening in the first place ,or if need to recover from it.Please make it part of your job as a mother to become informed.

Also, my sincerest thank you to Eric Leberg for writing this book.By writing this book I know in my heart that you have saved many more children than you will ever know.THANK YOU.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Customer
Everyone who works with or has ever come in contact with a child molester(s) could benefit from reading this book. Take it from an adult survivor who has gone through and come out the other side -- what Leberg says about the molester is true! They are very skilled at what they do - they are wired differently - children are their 'drug' of choice, and they will do anything in their power to get and keep what they want and need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Resource for Non Offending Parents
Eric Leberg's book was my first glimpse into the personality of the offender. So many books are written about the victims but few books are written for the lay person. Those of us that are healing from the hurts of child molestation need a book like this to help us understand the perpetrator and their patterns of deception.I applaud Mr. Leberg for this work and thank him for sharing his information with us.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a Parent's Point of View...
I am a parent of a child who was molested for over 5 years by a family "friend". When I finally discovered the abuse, the wheels of justice began turning. I needed some kind of anchor in my life so that Icould, first and foremost, help my child, then maintain the familystructure and finally, make some sense out of the system my child and Iwere suddenly thrown into. Manuevering through courtrooms, hearings - justthe whole legal system - is like being thrust into a foreign country whereyou don't know the language.Eric Leberg's book gives you a means by whichyou can wade through this confusing maze of terminology and procedure.Itgives a parent the tools (namely the language) to deal with attorneysbecause the attorney who is prosecuting the offender is NOT your child'srepresentative. S/he represents the state, and your child's welfare canbecome lost very easily in this process.

Leberg's book reveals themindframe of a molester.I kept (keep) beating myself up for "notseeing the signs."But Leberg helps parents see that the offender isVERY GOOD at what he does.In fact, as good as you think you are inprotecting your child, he explains that offenders are EVEN BETTER atgetting to them!If you are someone who, when faced with a crisis, needsto educate and inform themselves in order to better deal with that crisis, then I highly recommend Eric Leberg's book. He's been in this"business" a long time and has used his experience and knowledgeto write an excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHO WOULD WANT TO READ A BOOK ON CHILD MOLESTERS?
Better question is...WHO NEEDS TO READ A BOOK ON CHILD MOLESTERS? The answer is...EVERYBODY! As a mental health counselor, this book provided me new knowledge in the area of child molesters.Since Eric Leberg hasbeen a Department of Corrections Officer (probation officer) for over 25years, he brings a wealth of knowledge from his personal experience inworking with this population of offenders. Not only did I find it ofbenefit as a clinician, but so have my clients who have been sexuallymolested. One of the most valuable parts of this book is the detaileddescription of "grooming behaviors" used by perpetrators. It isbecause of this chapter that I believe most everyone would benefit inreading this book--especially parents.Molesters are such cons andmanipulators. So, how do you know who to trust? Through Mr. Leberg'sbook, you will have the opportunity to learn of their behaviors which might enable you to recognize a molester and save a child from beingharmed. While this book seems depressing in nature, I think Mr. Leberg didan excellent job of adding humor and relaying the stories in such a waythat the book is actually entertaining. For all of you who like NYPD Blue,Law and Order, and other shows about criminal justice, you're bound to findthis book engaging!Afterall, the cases reported in this book are reallife stories!Take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn from anexpert on child molesters! ...
