Product Description
This textbook looks at the main ethical questions that confront the criminal justice system - legislature, law enforcement, courts, and corrections - and those who work within that system, especially police officers, prosecutors, defence lawyers, judges, juries, and prison officers. John Kleinig sets the issues in the context of a liberal democratic society and its ethical and legislative underpinnings, and illustrates them with a wide and international range of real-life case studies. Topics covered include discretion, capital punishment, terrorism, restorative justice, and re-entry. Kleinig's discussion is both philosophically acute and grounded in institutional realities, and will enable students to engage productively with the ethical questions which they encounter both now and in the future - whether as criminal justice professionals or as reflective citizens. ... Product Description

The contributions in this volume suggest that "the ethics project in legal education" is increasingly an international one. Even though the strength of commitment by both the profession and the legal academy to "ethics learning" within law schools varies, two fundamental questions confront all who work in this area. First, what is it that we want our students to learn (or, perhaps, in what manner do we want our students to develop) from the teaching of "legal ethics"? Second, how can we create a learning environment that will encourage the nature and quality of learning we think is important?

All the contributors to this volume take a strong stand on the importance of ethical legal practice and the role of law schools in developing students’ capacities in this area. They share a belief in the essential need to encourage law students to engage with the moral dimensions of legal practice. The questions that these scholars grapple with are therefore not of the "should we be teaching this?" variety, but "how might we best to go about doing this, so that our efforts within law schools really make some difference?" Each of the chapters in this volume adds uniquely to our understanding of these matters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply THE best introduction to medical ethics. Period.
I've been teaching with this book for nearly 10 years, having survived several new editions and I keep coming back to it, for several reasons:

1. It's easy to read. Honestly, some textbooks (especially Philosophy) can be dry, using big words to explain big concepts that only make sense to those in the major. This book is written in everyday language, which means a lot to undergraduate students with huge reading schedules.

2. It's interesting. The cases are about real people and the real medical dilemmas they were faced with, placed in the context of history and significance for ethics. It's all relevant.

3. The tough topics are there. Pence does a great job explaining what can be difficult ideas to grasp. The case studies are examples. The ethical debates are very clearly identified.

4. It's both ethics and medicine. Some other reviews suggest the ethics should be gone -- no way! The field is, after all, medical ETHICS, so it would be negligent not to include the ethical theory. Most of the concepts people already understand; Pence does a good job explaining the technical words for them (like utilitarianism, deontology, etc.).

5. It really is objective. Despite protests from those who feel Pence beats up on religion -- especially regarding abortion -- the many complicated sides of these controversial issues are presented. (NOTE: It is a FACT that the Catholic Church turned away from science in response to Darwin with its policy of infallibility in the late 19th century, that there's a ban against birth control, and that the Bible defines life according to breath through the nostrils. Pence presents this information because it impacts the interpretation of the Church's position on certain issues. If philosophy can't be critical, there is no point in studying ethics at all).

This is by far the best introduction to medical ethics I've found. It's not perfect, but there's nothing better. Yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Ethics
This is a very informative book that is written in a way which is easy to understand. I found myself diving into it as if i was reading a novel. Excellent!

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative!
I'm finishing up my undergraduate degree and am taking a biomedics ethic class. This book by Pence is your text for the classroom. I'm no expert by any means. This book has been a way for me to get my feet wet so to speak. I've learned a ton of information. It has opened my eyes to so much and sadly it has disheartened me on what seems to be hopeless topics such as abortion/antiabortionist, health care and lack thereof, etc. But that's the way things are.

I'm glad we're reading this book as a classroom text. I'm enjoying the chapters and am learning quite a bit.

Thanks, Pence! :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful but also slanted
Having taught Medical Ethics on the undergraduate level, I found this book to be helpful by giving a general acquaintance to students about the cases which have challenged and required extraordinary thought about how we establish our values about what it means to be human and what that means in the field of medical treatment.
The author's introduction to the philosophy was decidedly shallow and in many cases his bias against Christianity is very obvious.I used those opportunities to discuss these issues with my students. The over-all experience was positive.Terry Bell author of "The Love Ethic: Rediscovering Our Moral Compass."The Love Ethic

Product Description

Police Ethics: The Corruption of Noble Cause provides an examination of noble cause, how it emerges as a fundamental principle of police ethics, and how it can provide the basis for corruption. The noble cause -- a commitment to "doing something about bad people" -- is a central "ends-based" police ethic that is corrupted when officers violate the law on behalf of personally held moral values. This book is about the power that police use to do their work and how it can corrupt at the individual and organizational levels. The material provides students of policing with a realistic understanding of the kinds of problems they will confront in the practice of police work.

I enjoyed this book very much. I also learned through reading it the many different ways that officers can become coppupt and how to notice corruption before it even starts. This is an excellent book and I do recommend it to anyone who is interested in corruption of police and their departments.

1-0 out of 5 stars Police ethics are much more than this
After reading this book, I wondered whether the authors are or were cops themselves. At least one of them (Crank) isn't, and never has been. This makes sense, because the ethics cases presented in this book are bland and barely skim the surface of what we (cops) go through every day.On the face of it, the ethics questions seem reasonable. To those of us in the profession, they are laughable.Sorry, but this book is another one of those written by college professors who don't really understand the world of the cop.

3-0 out of 5 stars a generally uninspired collection of essays
It is not surprising that this collection of essays is uneven, since such volumes usually are. Here, only two of the essays stand out as particularly instructive -- David Wilkins's on whether a lawyer should subordinate his or her identity to (certain) professional ideals, and Koniak & Cohan's on counterproductive incentives built into the class-action system.Several other essays contain an interesting idea or two, but most often they are too impressionistic, and their recommendations too general, to be of any real use.

I also must mention one odd thing about this book: it almost appears that someone involved in its production bore a grudge against Wilkins, because his name is misspelled in the table of contents, his bio is strangely truncated, and there are...many egregious typos in his essay...

    Product Description

This collection of thought-provoking, easy-to-read essays articulates drastically different moral beliefs about the relationship between criminal justice and social justice, and the importance of ethical behavior of individuals working in the system. The essays--which include hypothetical cases as well as actual court opinions--show readers how moral beliefs are examined and defended, and encourage them to examine and defend their own positions. In many cases, the articles present different sides of an issue, often in the form of direct debates between experts (e.g., feminist scholar Catherine MacKinnon on prostitution law vs the International Committee for Prostitutes' Rights and its "World Whores' Congress Statements"; O.J. Simpson attorney Johnnie Cochran vs Yale Law Professor Akhil Reed Amar). Often includes articles that argue for unpopular or unusual positions. An introduction on ethical reasoning and ethics pedagogy is followed by sections on the nature of criminal guilt, law making, law enforcement, judicial processing, punishment and emerging issues (technology and media). Issues addressed include Drug Legalization; Prostitution; Corporate Violence; Hate Crimes; Abortion; Police Ethics; Deception & Influence; Selective Enforcement; Lawyers Ethics; Plea Bargaining & Due Process; Treatment of Inmates; Death Penalty; Cyberspace; and Media. Includes resources on professional Code of Ethics. For anyone involved in/with the criminal justice system.

One benefit of this book is that it contains articles, commentary, and discussion questions all in one text.It also covers a wide variety of issues, which is good since business ethics is a vast subject. On the negative side, I don't think the organization of the sections is the most effective way to approach the topic. The sections are organized based on a 1991 survey of CEOs in which the participants ranked their most important types of ethical dilemmas. As a result, there isn't the logical flow or progression of ideas from chapter to chapter that one might expect from a philosophy book. Unfortunately, the pragmatic interests of CEOs are not the same as the educational needs of students who are new to business ethics. There is also no discussion of ethical theories and no direct interaction between the articles. On the whole, this book may be beneficial if used in conjunction with a survey of ethical theories and ethical decision-making, but taken by itself it makes for a rather uneven introduction to business ethics. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless book
This is perhaps the most useless books I've ever read.I recommend either the Sum & Substance audio set on Professional Responsibility or the Law in a Flash set, if you truly want to obtain a command over the topic of lawyers' ethics.

This book is merely a bunch of rambling that gives you empty tautologies without formulating answers to legal issues on ethics. The last chapter is perhaps the worse written in the entire book, almost as if some sissy legal aid in class was helping the professor in his Hofstra classroom.

This book reminds you of those meaningless ramblings you find in the Talmud or Zohar which raise nebulous questions and don't give any answers. That tradition needs to be ignored if our civilization is to survive.

If a professor uses this book in your class, drop out of the class. ... Read more
