Product Description
Juvenile justice officials across the United States are embracing a new method of dealing with adolescent substance abuse. Importing a popular innovation from adult courts, state and local governments have started hundreds of specialized drug courts to provide judicial supervision and coordinate substance abuse treatment for drug-involved juveniles. The number of youth affected by these new courts is relatively small, but the programs are spreading rapidly and their presence is changing how practitioners and policymakers think about adolescent drug use. Despite the increasing popularity of juvenile drug courts, researchers have only begun to test whether they stop or reduce teen substance abuse more effectively than other programs. Thisis the first book to examine the ideas behind juvenile drug courts and explore their history and popularity. The editors have assembled top justice policy experts to assess the evidence supporting juvenile drug courts and to guide the next generation of evaluation research. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the role of the juvenile justice system in addressing teen drug problems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding the other self
Stan Law has created a most absorbing tale of self-discovery. He has an inimitable talent for capturing concepts of the infinite in finite and poetic words, and presenting characters we care about, in this instance a teenage boy and the princess of his dreams. Who is she? The answer will widen the reader's horizons beyond time and space.

The cosmic merging of Alec and Sandra is exceptional writing, even for this author from whom we can always expect the extraordinary. It should touch every sensitive reader in their innermost centers.

Congratulations, en fin, on another masterful piece of visionary fiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Magically Revealing Coming-of-Age Story
Threaded together in succinct prose, The Princess (Alexander Trilogy, Book 1) by Stan Law is a superbly written work adding to the author's already profound storytelling career. In many ways, this is a tale for us all, both young and old. It is a coming-of-age story high on life and hormones! It is a tale that breaks barriers and helps readers to realize that life's perspective is what we make it; we form our own realities. What also adds greatly to this tale are the wonderful illustrations that add another dimension to the life of the book; it's akin to other stories involving a young boy on a path of self discovery and on the search for real meaning, such as "The Selected Works of T. S. Spivet." "The Princess" is a very enjoyable read and highly recommended read.

Thomas Hollowell is the author of Allah's Garden: A True Story of a Forgotten War in the Sahara Desert of Morocco

5-0 out of 5 stars It enchants the child within each one of us.
Stan Law, an architect, sculptor and prolific writer, once again delights in exploring the full range of human emotions. Alec, a lad of 13, is just becoming aware of the hormones that are about to play havoc with his sense of reality. Undeterred, he marshals all his courage and fights on. And, in a way as mystical as it was unexpected, he is rewarded beyond his wildest expectations.

I was instantly drawn into the magic of the story. It seems it enchants the child within each one of us. No matter what age.

Product Description

This is the clearest, most fully illustrated version of the navigation rules that every captain must have on board—in fact, boats 12 meters (or 39 feet) and longer are required to carry a copy. For years, the United States Coast Guard has produced a guide to operating vessels safely and lawfully in both international and inland waters. But its language is legalistic, complex, and not always very comprehensible. Chapman’s easy-to-read edition has exactly the same information, but with additional illuminating commentary by Editor-at-Large Dan Fales; an explanation of many of the rules in simple, lucid detail; and advice on real-world application. With eight more illustrations than the Coast Guard’s book, the manual looks better than ever, too. No matter whether you navigate a small sailboat, motorboat, or spacious yacht, you won’t want to head onto the water without it.

Product Description

I think adults miss something very important about teenagers. They think teenagers are dangerous I little vortexes of evil. I. But my friends and I have so much more we'd rather do than waste time gathering guns and ammunition and stuff. My friends and I are not harmful. But inconsiderate treatment can stir to terrible action those who are." -- John, 15

"We are human beings, not machines. A person can only take so much before reaching a breaking point." -- Jill, 19

We've all seen the newspaper stories, watched the TV dramas unfold. They're everywhere, it seems: teenagers who shoot classmates in schools, who molest children, who commit suicide or cut themselves or give birth in secret and leave babies on doorsteps or in Dumpsters, Are these teenagers born bad -- or did something happen to make them act this way? Why do teens today feel so angry, so full of pain, so alone?

Listen to the voices of teenagers as they comment, candidly, on teens in trouble. The experts, those who study these difficult issues and discuss them in the media, draw their own conclusions. The teens here tell it like it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for teens
I read this book when I was in high school and I think that it is a great read for teens or those who work with teens. There are a lot of great topics covered.

3-0 out of 5 stars adequate monsters
As a collection of stories, this one is adequate. The stories themselves are realistic but seem to be taken from a small unrepresentative portion of society as there are a lot of important teen issues that don't even garner a mention. What is included is well written, but as someone who has worked with teens in crisis for years, I was disappointed that there wasn't more to this book than there was.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, but not comprehensive
We're Not Monsters is a excellent, factual portrayal of many of the issues facing teens today. For each topic, there is a wide variety of resources, from basic information and statistics to stories and quotes from other teens. It also clearly explains what a concerned friend can do and gets into some of the social issues involved and potential areas for advocacy. One major gripe that kept me from giving 5 stars: a lot of common, important teen issues (eating disorders for example) aren't covered in here. I was happy with the chapters on teen suicide and self-injury (both topics are near and dear to my heart), and the section on killer teens was interesting, but I was disappointed that the chapter on teen abusers didn't include more information for victims of abuse, and the chapter on teen pregnancy left a lot of potential avenues unexplored. Overall, though, I would recommend this book to teens in trouble, their friends, concerned adults, and anyone curious about what's going on with troubled teens. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too
Jessie and her best friend, Shanty, are within weeks of graduating high school.Jessie can't wait to get on with her life and fulfill her dreams of becoming an architect. She is surprised to learn that her grandfather (whom she never got to know) was also an architect, and one that brought many benefits to her town of Muskegon. His vision helped build a much needed medical research facility.

When Jessie notices a building the town has slated for demolition, her brain starts firing ideas at her.She creates a new use for the old building and puts her ideas onto paper. With the help of a local couple who encourage the area teens, Jessie is determined to see her ideas come to fruition.

In the meantime, Jessie has had her eye on Dustin. But she's positive he doesn't even know she exists. To make matters worse, Dustin seems to show interest in her best friend!Jessie is honorable and would never dream of cutting in on her friend's territory. But Shanty is sweet on Richard, an up-and-coming musician. And then Russell, a smart, college, law-bound boy, starts to show interest in Jessie.

The romantic entanglements are too much for Jessie. All she really wants is to have fun and not worry about a serious relationship at this time. When Dustin keeps approaching her with sweet gestures but then hanging out with Latajsha, Jessie has no clue what is going on.

Ms. Muhammad writes a story focusing on Jessie, a girl with a strong and moral center. It was wonderful to read a story based in the city that doesn't have a depressing overtone.Instead of hearing a "poor me" theme, Ms. Muhammad creates a character that knows what she wants and isn't afraid to keep to her dreams, no matter what is going on around her.Jessie grows up in a loving home with both parents who are still very much in love and supportive of Jessie. With the guidance of her parents and her best friend, Shanty, Jessie grows into a beautiful young woman.

The author leaves the reader hanging with teasers in her postscript. Will there be a continuation to Jessie's story? Will she give Dustin a chance?Or will things develop with Russell? These questions aren't answered in the story - but maybe in a forthcoming sequel?

As a reviewer, I am often asked to read and discuss books outside of my usual and accustomed reading area of interests. Most often this has not been a pleasant experience. There have been times that it was most difficult to render an unbiased and fair review on a book that I would not normally pick up off the shelf...Let alone read with enough care and concern to render an opinion as to its worthiness. This book did not fall in that category in any way.

Although I would seldom choose a young adult novel by preference, I found this work to be most enjoyable. The main characters, Jessie and Shanty soon become larger than life, bigger than real teens.I was quickly captured by the charm of two above average teens as they wended their way through the intricacies that are life in the final days of a girl's High School life.

That this all occurred in an inner-city, large school environment so totally foreign to someone who graduated from a tiny high school in a semi-rural farming area only compounded the aura ofmystique surrounding the characters.

I found the story interesting and the character development exceptional. That Jessie and Shanty were life-long friends and were devoted to one another was obvious.Less obvious but none-the-less as important were their interactions within their "crew".Russell, Richard, Dustin and Crystal all had their places and al were part of growing up.

Ms. Muhammad did a wonderful job of using the vernacular or black youth in a large city to bring her characters to life in a stirring and pleasing way. While I don't believe this will supplant works like "Gone with the Wind" or "Uncle Tom's Cabin" in literature, I did find it a very pleasant read and I eagerly look forward to the coming of the next chapter in this ongoing saga of real life.

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Teens," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Teens in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Teens when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Teens, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
