1-0 out of 5 stars Useless - Take it from an HLS Student
A friend of mine had a copy of this book, which I recently looked through. I can assure you that nothing you glean from this book is going to make it easier for you to get into law school. Admissions at Harvard are pretty straightforward - they look at your LSAT score, GPA, and then any extracurricular and work experience you have.
You want to get into HLS? Work hard in undergrad, get top-notch grades, look into some interesting internships, and consider enrolling in an LSAT preparatory course. Other than that, the only advice I can give you is to get your applications in as early as possible in the admissions cycle.

4-0 out of 5 stars CORRECTION
The author, Willie J. Epps Jr., is of no relation to the previous Dean, as stated in Kevin Meyer's review. The author was a student at Harvard Law who wanted to help college students achieve their goals of getting into law school by uncovering the mystery of how others did just that. The author's insight into the types of candidates and applications accepted into Harvard Law is invaluable for college students considering law school and the essays provided by accepted students give those applying a view of what types of essays made the cut. The book is helpful for students trying to develop a strong candidacy to any law school -- not just Harvard. While some reviewers find the student comments 'egotistical' , one should be reminded that it is the nature of 'personal' essays. (Yes, one's own pride needs to be in check when reading the applications and essays of these exemplary individuals.)
This book can prove to be very helpful when the application process seems nothing but daunting! Thanks Willie.

1-0 out of 5 stars you don't have to spend money on this book
i will tell you precisely how to get into harvard law school:

a) buy your admissionor

b) be related to a dean of admissions or

c) earn excellent grades and a high lsat score from a reputable college, and don't come off as a jerk in your essay.

beyond that there is no other tactic at your disposal. no book will ever get you into an ivy league law school, and if you are looking for essay advice then you can find it online for free. there is a copy of this book in the career services office of my college. there is basically a copy of this book available on harvard's website (all the info is there).

you can only exemplify your worth to harvard through the choices that you have made in your academic career. that means if the extent of your extracurricular involvement was setting up the keg for that frat party frosh year, or you find yourself as a senior with a 3.2 GPA, your salvation will not be contained in this book. allay the desperation, and get some work experience.

good luck with your search, and discriminate against anyone who is trying to sell you something.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disregard Previous Poster
I just wanted to point out to the review who claimed "This book is filled with people who got 4.5 and above GPAs and LSAT scores of 170 and better." It is IMPOSSIBLE to get a GPA of 4.5 in college. The highest GPA one can achieve in college is 4.33 and thats *if* the school awards an A+ for a grade of 100%. Most schools just award ordinary A's which caps the maximum GPA at 4.0.

3-0 out of 5 stars not a guidebook
This book quite simply should not be titled "How to get into Harvard Law School." Rather, it should make reference to profiles of applicants who actually got into Harvard Law School.Epps's advice is fairly generic, telling the reader what HLS is like from a social and academic standpoint. He spends more time concentrating on details that the reader probably already knows by just visiting HLS's official website. Other than share some basic information concerning the university, he lacks in any comprehensive detail regarding increasing one's chances of getting admitted.
On the other hand, the profiles were useful and the applicants' essays were, if nothing more than remarkable, quite inspirational. The profiles were indeed intimidating, but I would assume that people who have considered buying this particular book are not necessarily the types to be easily scared off by soaring GPA's and perfect LSAT's. I would assume that they themselves know where they stand academically on whether they should even consider applying to Harvard in the first place. If I were you, consider borrowing this book from a local library or buying a used copy. The full price is not worth it. The year the book was made is also quite outdated and does not accurately reflect Harvard's statistics today. ... Read more

Product Description
This popular book helps students make the transition from their undergraduate experience to law school learning. Unlike other "introduction to law school" texts, Bridging the Gap offers a different approach because it: Explains the "why" of law, providing students with the context necessary to understand why law school is taught in a certain manner. Explains the "how" of the law, setting out a step-by-step process that will help students adapt to the law school setting. Explains the "what" of the law, giving students the opportunity to practice the problem-solving process by providing numerous exercises in a variety of subject matter areas. Rather than giving only general advice, or black letter law and some practice problems for a specific subject, Bridging the Gap provides the context, the process, and the problems. Written by two former law school professors who used these techniques with thousands of students, Bridging the Gap is a guide to what really works in law school. ... Read more

I purchased this book for my pre-law course. This is an excellent tool for 1L students who are clueless on what to expect when entering law school. It lays the basic understanding on how, when, and what of law. The book was very interesting and gave examples on how to study, prepare, and complete assignments for class. If you are asked to purchase this book, please do.You will not regret it and you will be prepared for the first day of class.

I'm 50 years old and never going to law school... but I wish I had this kind of sensible, practical, (and often hilarious) advice when I went to engineering school or entered the business world.Ms Baker has managed to write a book that is unlike most advice books - she opens herself up and critically examines what she did right and wrong. She lays herself bare and writes a truly wonderful book.

Highly recommended.

Product Description
The title of this book, 'The Slackers Guide to Law School,' might strike some as irreverent. 'Slacker' is a term of pride and even endearment among the latest generation of student, however, this book gives prospective law students a realistic idea of what exactly they are getting into. This book is not about laziness, but about succeeding on one's own terms. Thus the subtitle: Success Without Stress.

Students should: (1) set their own goals and not get caught up in the hype of what everyone else is pursuing; (2) establish methods of study, fine-tuning one that works best; and (3) maintain a healthy life balance. For the careful 'slacker,' it is possible to make time for hobbies, socializing, dating or even starting a family. This reduces stress, makes law school more enjoyable, and as shown in this book can boost performance in class. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Different kind of guide
I liked this book, though for probably different reasons that it was intended.I really liked the anecdotes throughout the book, and I liked the way it conveyed its message in a casual, level-headed way.I found it very easy to connect with the author and his advice. However, I thought the book was more beneficial as a way to connect with a fellow law student, rather than as a guide.I also found it kind of depressing that the "slacker" had such a hard time with the job search at the end of law school.Maybe I felt this way because of the current job market and the underlying uncertainty of a job after school. That said, I thought it was very good and well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read for All Prospective Law School Students
This is a great read for any prospective law school student who values a real-world view of student life. The author does an excellent job putting together the various facets of attending law school and how he personally tackled the challenges associated with them in a humorous and easy to read context. I chuckled out loud about a dozen times - not a normal response when reading a law prep book.

This isn't your "one-stop-shop" law prep book; the depth when it comes to specifics of preparing for law school is lacking somewhat. This book does however key in on some crucial elements of law school life such as balance and stress - two elements in law school that will determine success or failure.

Juan covers the entire time-line with regards to law school; from deciding whether to go, getting in, getting through and getting a job once you graduate. This is a must read in your beginning law school preparation. The value of having the right attitude and perspective is paramount to success in law school. This book does a great job providing another angle of law school that you won't read anywhere else.

In comparing this book to others I have read, I would describe it as this: "Planet Law School II" is the bible of law school prep, not something to read cover to cover but good to pick out what information you need when you need it. "The Slacker's Guide" is on the other side of the spectrum, easy to read cover to cover in an entertaining way. "Getting In, Getting Good, and Getting the Gold" fits nicely in-between; another book that should be in anyone's arsenal of law prep books.Get this book, read it, and move on - you'll be happy that you did.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please don't read this book!
This is a dangerous book. I bought this book thinking I would get a different perspective on law school. The first few chapters are the standard topics, "should I go to law school, how do I choose a school" and so on. When it comes to his advice about what to do once you're there, what I read left me speechless. I was horrified when he started to discuss when to be absent, or whether or not to attended class at all. I don't know about the rest of you, but for the money I'm going to pay, you better believe I'll be in every class. The only reason I'm glad I bought this book is that it's off the self, and it won't end up in the hands off someone who would actually take this seriously.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most accurate portrayal of law school
As a recovering attorney, I can attest that Juan Doria's book is a fairly accurate description of law school. The book describes the entire process of law school - from deciding to pursue a JD to taking the bar exam.I would consider myself a typical person and Doria's book is so accurate that it felt like a biography of my life. Many of the reasons why I, and many others, choose to go to law school are explored in depth. Doria goes on to describe the LSAT and application process. Then Doria masterfully navigates the 3 year process of law school and the pursuit of one of the coveted "prestigous" law jobs.Last, Doria discusses the issues that many JD's face after graduation. Many graduates, including myself, don't want to practice law but are forced to work as attorneys. After slaving for a law firm, I was lucky and able to explore job opportunities outside the legal profession. If I had read the book before law school then maybe I would have made wiser decisions.
I didn't read other books before entering law school because success is unique to each person and no book is going to contain the magic key to graduating with honors. This is a main theme to Doria's book.In sum, I am recommending that any person associated with the juris doctorate degree to read Doria's book.It is short, entertaining and very pratical.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book I wish I had before going to law school
This book is an excellent primer on what to expect before going to law school. The book is exceedingly well written and presents a compelling narrative of what one can, and should, expect during law school. This book is a must-read for anyone considering law school or a career in the law.I cannot recommend this book more highly. ... It uses a checklist format to lead students through questions they need to ask to fully evaluate the legal problem they are trying to solve. It also synthesizes the material in a way that most students are unable to do on their own, and assembles the different issues, presenting a clear guide to procedural analysis that students can draw upon when writing their exams. Other study aids provide sample problems, but none offer the systematic approach to problem solving found in this book. ... Read more

Product Description
Successful law students quickly learn that attending lectures and reading casebooks impedes their ability to succeed in law school. As one prominent law professor explains, "law students who perform well on exams often instinctively learn that attendance in the case method class is not particularly important for them to succeed on their exams, and these...students, as well as others, often stop attending daily law school classes." 70 U Cin L Rev 137, 183 (2001).

The sad reality is that most lectures and casebooks ("The Case Method") fail to teach students the information or basic skills needed to excel on fact pattern exams, the dominant form of student evaluation. See, e.g., Id.; 43 Hastings LJ 143 (1991). Worse than failing to prepare students for their final exams, the Case Method fails to prepare students for the practice of law. See, e.g., 42 Fordham L Rev 227, 232 (1973). However, while students can learn to become effective lawyers after law school, there is something a law student only gets one shot at in law school--obtaining good grades.

It is impossible to erase bad grades and typically just as hard to change their consequences on a student's future legal career--consequences that compound because the first job out of law school has a major impact on future opportunities. Therefore, law school should not only teach students how to become effective lawyers, it should also teach the knowledge and skills needed to excel on final exams. The Siri Method modifies how students think about and approach law school in order to achieve these two goals quickly and with maximum results.

The Siri Method provides a holistic understanding of the current model of American legal education and a true understanding of fact pattern exams and the Case Method. It teaches how to develop the skills and acquire the information needed to excel on final exams. It also teaches how to maximize a law student's preparation for the practice of law and the bar examination. Finally, The Siri Method provides the theoretical basis and supporting literature for why it works, ironically written mostly by law professors.

If you are a law student, do not squander away precious time in law school discovering that attending most lectures and reading casebooks will not prepare you for your final exams or the practice of law. Do not squander away further time trying to develop a system for learning the information and skills you will need to excel in law school. Follow the Siri Method to assure you excel on your final exams, best prepare for your bar exam, and properly prepare for the practice of law. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK AND A MUST READ
I have read this book and would recommend it to anyone wishing to excel in law school. The book is well written, clear, concise and witty to boot. I have read several books on doing well in law school and none have been sprinkled with the type of humor prevalent throughout this book, which made it a very enjoyable read. While the book is written with a sense of humor, Mr. Siri's suggestions are serious and effective recommendations to minimize the time commitment mandated by law school while maximizing a students ability to do well.

The program outlined is logical, easy to understand and thoroughly explained. Do not miss out on getting this book, especially if you are going to be a 1L student this year. However, this book will be valuable regardless of what year you are in. Additionally, Mr. Siri explains how to select courses that will prepare a student to excel not only in the classroom, but more importantly, in the practice of law. It is a step by step guide for law school success.

I have read numerous books because I am a very voracious reader. However, this is the first time that I was so moved by the substance and contents of a book that I felt compelled to write a review. I don't know how much clearer I can make it other than to say, BUY THIS BOOK!!!! You will not regret it.

On second hand, if you want to struggle through law school, and mediocrity is what you want your law school grades to reflect, then don't buy the book. Its as simple as that. Look at the ratings reflected by those who have reviewed this book. You have one person who has rated the book a 2, while the others reflect 5's. Ask yourself why are there so many excellent ratings. Its because its an excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Different from all other law school preview books
This book is different from any other law school preview book you'll read. Every other book drives into your head that the best way to succeed in law school is to follow the professor's orders. In contrast Aaron Siri's book makes you think critically about the law school process and harshly criticizes the pedants.

Even if this book doesn't work out for you its still a great read. It will help you see your law school education in a new light and, in the process, you will begin to think critically about law school as you will about all the other areas of the law. It gives you background on why law school is the way that it is and why it continues to this day. It goes on with methods more shocking than novel on how to succeed in a modern law school. I've spoken to several recently graduated lawyers and they (reluctantly) agree with many of his concepts.

Another major plus is that Aaron Siri makes himself accessible to his readers. I had no trouble at all getting in touch with him after shooting him an email.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly helpful strategies and suggestions that anyone can use
I purchased this book during my second semester of law school (after a less than stellar first semester) and saw a tremendous improvement in not only my grades, but my approach to legal study and exam taking.

What I enjoyed the most about this book is that the author exposes law school exams for what they really are.....a game that requires a good strategy in order to succeed. This book explains how to play the game by using appropriate study aids, prior exams, and (most importantly) a series of integrated techniques that will help you save time and eliminate a great deal of stress in the process.

The author has an easygoing, engaging tone that makes this a quick and easy read. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is ready to succeed in their legal classes.

2-0 out of 5 stars waste of time.
here's what he says in a nutshell so i can save you the 30 bucks.
1. buy study aids
2. get former outlines
3. don't read your casebook and don't go to class.

actually, i didn't even have to say this, since its on the cover.
i purchased SIX of the highest rated books on amazon, and the best one to read is Law School Confidential.it is the only book that gives sound advice from start to finish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver

Product Description
This set of CDs includes a 6 hour lecture on Real Property and a 62 page handout. For the Law School Legends Audio Series, we found the truly gifted law school professors most law students can only dream about - the professors who draw rave reviews not only for their scholarship, but for their ability to make the law easy to understand. We asked these select few professors to condense their courses into a single lecture. And it’s these lectures you’ll find in the Law School Legends Audio Series. With Law School Legends, you’ll get a brilliant law professor explaining an entire subject to you in one simple, dynamic lecture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to real property law
This lecture provides a solid background in real property law basics and is even (some) fun to listen to. I was pleasantly surprised, after reading the other reviews, that I found the lecturer's voice just fine -- Brooklyn accent exaggerated now and then; singing is not her forte but it's not dreadful -- both are used occasionally for comic effect.Cultural reference tie-ins to real property law concepts are corny, but it lightens up what some consider, if you can believe it, a dull topic.(You might roll your eyes, but she's still funny ...)Pace is a little slow; she uses a lot of repetition -- perhaps timed for note taking, which I am not doing while listening in the car.Content a bit shallow on some topics. Still, an excellent introduction to the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars So helpful for the black letter
First, I have to say her voice is not at all annoying, and while some of the songs and jokes are very, very corny, it works as a mnemonic. My property professor was undoubtedly the dullest lecturer I ever had in my life, so I was grateful to find a fairly concise audio that I could use during commutes and trips while I was studying for the bar.I only wish I had used these CDs earlier, especially during my first year.I found her coverage to be very thorough and clearly organized, and her mnemonics--not only the songs--simply worked in a way that reading and re-reading outlines doesn't.The amount that you'll understand and retain, relative to the time you'll spend listening to the tapes, is an unquestionable plus (especially when you consider that you can be studying in your car).I would definitely recommend this to first-years or those who need to review.

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding
after reading other reviews i almost did not buy this one.glad i did.first, nothing wrong with the voice, and yes, i have lived on the east coast, west cost, and midwest.second, her outline alone is worth the price of the entire package.it is the best, clearest, concise outline of property law, written in clear logical sentences, not some silly cryptic half-baked english.third, this is a concise, to-the-point, excellent summary of key points, very clear, full of useful mnemonics, and a beautiful treatment of property law.if you missed lecture, or are looking for someone to spoon feed you, this package is not for you.but to tie it all up, refresh it in the mind, and bring the concepts of property law all tightly together, this is excellent.very nicely done; i have several other audio CD sets on various law lectures, and this one stands out, unique, useful, and well worth every penny i spent.again, her voice is fine...maybe other reviewers have overly sensitive ears?what did they think they were buying?a musical?

2-0 out of 5 stars Paula's earlier recordings are preferred
First, I will say that I am very pleased with this lecturer's audio from 1996.I found the substantive for real property from that time frame to be covered succinctly in very intelligible form, with pnemonics and idiotic hypos very effective for recall of discussable topics while reviewing black letter law.I am presently taking real property as a student and am not yet in bar prep.

I decided to purchase this newer audio which, coincidentally is roughly an hour longer on the chance that the lecturer had new material which would be important for a student taking real property.I thought that the additional hour of audio over the last 9 years between recordings might cover more modern substantive (i.e. landlord tenant law) which may be relevant from a test taking vantage.I was wrong. The lecturer now takes longer to get to the point, and she now "sings" to try to facilitate the recall process. The singing is intolerable, and the more modern jokes take longer to get to the point. But the essence of the substantive is no different than in the older lectures.

So I am not listening to the newer audio now.I'm back to using the older audio as there was no horrific singing and the points of law are arrived at more quickly.I find her earlier approach to the recall process to be as effective as her modern approach, but easier on my ears.

5-0 out of 5 stars good substance, bad voice
Regardless of the other reviews these are actually pretty good. I listen to them as I drive to and from law school. She has a pretty poor singing voice and some of the songs are annoying however it may actually help you remember the subject.

One thing you should be careful of is that the CDs just cover Real Property. Most 1L classes also cover personal property, future interests, etc.You can't rely on these CDs to cover the whole course. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wanting to be the Best
ONE L is the first-hand account of the 1975-76 beginning year of Harvard Law student turned lawyer turned best-selling author Scott Turow. Turow accurately recreates the insanity of the year by exposing how utterly selfish everyone is or becomes because of the desire to be the best. The professors are driven by ego, the students are driven by fear and greed. Turow realizes that despite his best liberal attempts to stay above the fray that he too wishes to be one of those who finishes on top of the first year grades and thus make the Harvard Review. Well-written, very engaging (although a little too long), and all too real, Turow's book remains the classic to read for those entering LS.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books of non-fiction that I have read.
My title says it all: this is one of the best books of non-fiction that I have read. Perhaps I feel this way because I was considering attending law school so I had an interest in it. However, Turow's talent as a writer is evident with this, his first book, so for that reason alone you might enjoy it. Also, if you know of anyone considering law school or perhaps even already there, this book would be a GREAT gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring book for aspiring law students
This is a second read for me.I read this book severwl years ago and I have thought of it often. ScottTurow was a teacher before he went to Law School. This book is really a journal of his first year at Harvard Law.I think it is a wonderful book, that has whetted my appetite to learn more about the Law and to read everything I can on it.I definitely would recommend it to anyone wants to go to Law school.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE L: Five Stars
I have had this book for about a year, and just closed it a moment ago after reading it for the second time. It is a great read and highly recommended for anyone considering a graduate degree in any discipline.

Turow's writing is vibrant and filled with emotion and humor. I felt as if I was taking the 1L journey with him: I shifted my opinion of Perini, felt strongly in my opinion of sharing class outlines, and was irritated with Terry's work ethic. As he mentions in the Afterword, he is probably more "compulsive than the average" - this really puts things in perspective when reading the book. Classmates and even professors are described in brutal detail: "he's a great guy and extremely bright... but." That same exposition of classmates and professors continues with the institution itself.

This book is not only entertaining, but is one of the rare first-person accounts of an elite education worth reading. Turow's background as lecturer at Stanford's English Department gives ample credibility to his writing ability. The only negative I could really find in this book is the Afterword - it seems to be a little much. I appreciate his thoughts on the legal system and lawyers in general, but this section could have been reduced by a few pages. Having said that, it does not detract my overall opinion whatsoever.

Read this if you are thinking of law school. Read this if you are thinking about grad school. Read this if you need to be reminded of what hard work it takes to succeed in any field. Read this if you want to be entertained.

Enjoy this book, and thank you for reading this review.

Specifically designed and written for use on the advanced criminal litigation option on the Bar Vocational Course, this manual adopts a pragmatic approach to its treatment of criminal law and focuses specifically on those areas of criminal law which are most important to the junior criminal practitioner and which they are most likely to encounter during their first years in practice. Split into three distinct parts, the first part of the manual deals with the crucial procedural aspects of criminal law which will be encountered in practice, including the scope of legal powers to enter and search premises, and abuse of process.Part II covers selected areas of the substantive law, which are particularly relevant to the junior practitioner, including public order offences, dangerous drugs, offensive weapons, and drink driving and road traffic offences. The final section features an extended case study focusing on features which the practitioner will commonly encounter in practice, including police witnesses, custody records and conflicts of interest between defendants.Including realistic case papers and typical exhibits, this section also features a set of tasks to perform and a sample answer offering trainee barristers the opportunity to practise applying their skills in a criminal litigation context. ...
