4-0 out of 5 stars Employment Law
Hello, Thanks for the quick response in mailing this book out.Also, it came in good condition and I'm looking forward to using it this upcoming semester of school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cases vs Pop-culture
I am currently using this text for a course called Legal Regulation of Business at a small liberal arts college in PA. The professor is a current lawyer at a local firm. I find that this text is useful when explaining cases, but lacks conceptual depth. Other than the cases, the rest of the book has newspaper articles, interviews, and narratives that talk about the work environment, but do not contribute to legal concepts. While it may have true statements and relevant ideas, this pop-culture aspect does not help if you are trying to learn the law. (An example would be an opening piece about why people want to work in certain places. The reason why people work is not important to defining legal workplace issues.) I find the instruction in class more useful, as the professor (as a lawyer) can often make up better examples than what the book gives. What is useful as well are the questions at the end of each case. Some are based on other cases, some are just to make you think about different circumstances. These are great for making you think on your feet and apply what you just learned about the case. My best suggestion is to use this book as a supplement for case examples, but not to rely on it completely, especially if you have never had any type of legal-ese exposure before. As it is part of my major, I am familiar with a lot of the terminology; the book often does not define terms, so I suggest having a law dictionary on hand. Overall, it is a good text, even though it is slightly out of date. For more up-to-date cases and corrections, be sure to buy the 2008 Supplement as well. ... Read more

The materials afford a number of opportunities for the instructor to explore and emphasize issues of contract law theory and various public policy limitations on the concept of freedom of contract. Product Description
Complete Tort Law: Text, Cases, & Materialscombines extracts from a wide range of primary materials with clear explanatory text and practical learning features to provide a complete resource for students of tort law.

While the text covers the key historical cases, the focus overall is on recent case examples which helps to bring the subject to life and gives it contemporary relevance for modern law students. The extracts from primary materials have been carefully selected to ensure they are long enough to give sufficient detail to illustrate the point of law being discussed, but succinct enough so as not to be overwhelming and to be accessible for students who are studying the subject for the first time. The explanatory text is written in a clear and straightforward style, which clarifies the key concepts in an interesting and engaging way and allows the student to understand the fundamental points of this important area of law.

The book contains a wealth of features such as summaries, key points, hint boxes, and questions, which provide plenty of learning support for students. Key concepts are highlighted for emphasis, cross-references and comparisons are pointed out to link the various elements of tort law, and the questions encourage students to check their understanding as they learn. The two-color page design allows students to identify instantly the primary material and learning features for easy navigation throughout the text, while the further reading suggestions direct the reader towards texts and articles that are easily accessible in most libraries, to provide a practical resource for further study.

The online resource center also provides an extensive range of additional features designed to support the text and further support the students in their studies.

The conflict of laws has experienced vast changes in the seventy three years since the first edition of this book. Foreign law not only is of growing importance in a global economy but also holds important lessons for us as we reconsider our own law. 4-0 out of 5 stars Conflict of Laws: Hay Casebook
Well, as far as law books go, this one is as good as any other.The Legalines guide has helped me get through this material as well as the Gilberts.
Casebooks aren't exactly known for their entertainment quality - as this one is certainly no exception - but it covers the material in a thorough manner and isn't too difficult to understand.
My biggest complaint is the tiny typeface used for the Notes following each case.My teacher concentrates quite a bit on these extra factoids and the tiny print is a bit of a strain on the eyes (especially at 2:00am).Otherwise, this book is pretty much exactly what you would expect from a Conflicts textbook.

The principal function of this forms manual is to illustrate the exceptional importance of specific language to all contract-based transactions. Unintended ambiguities or carelessness in wording may result in the loss of properties worth millions of dollars. Additionally, differences in state law, regional custom, the identity and interests of the client, and the peculiarities of the specific transaction require a lawyer to choose carefully which form to use as the basis of the transaction. For this reason, there are often included several forms for the same transaction. ... Read more

Product Description
Insurance Law and Policy: Cases and Materials, Second Edition, authored by Tom Baker, a well-known and highly regarded figure in insurance law teaching and scholarship, is a contemporary text that stresses the big-picture role of insurance in American business and society. Thoroughly revised for currency in its second edition, this highly regarded casebook continues to be interesting and eminently teachable.

Among the features that made this casebook a success:

Coverage that focuses on the big picture of federal-state regulatory roles in addition to the traditional insurance coverage topics;

Extensive use of statutory materials, presented through problems;

Manageable assignments, most structured to contain one major case followed by informative notes and questions and a problem;

Interesting, well-edited, up-to-date cases on topics such as the World Trade Center attack, Katrina, and the latest Supreme Court decisions on punitive damages and employment-based insurance benefits;

A web site that features links to supplemental reading, updates, and other materials.

Revised and completely updated, the Second Edition:

Now organizes liability insurance coverage into separate units for different kinds of liability insurance and includes new units on auto and professional liability insurance;

Includes a new unit in the property insurance section on Katrina;

Moves regulation to the back of the text, reflecting the judgment that students appreciate and understand that topic best once they have learned about insurance through the traditional insurance coverage topics;

Simplifies and updates ERISA materials and incorporates them into the units on health and disability insurance so that students learn about ERISA in context;

Incorporates extensive feedback from satisfied adopters of the first edition.

Concise and problem-oriented, Insurance Law and Policy: Cases and Materials, Second Edition, is an excellent resource for those learning insurance law. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good
I'd like to see the picture of the book I want to buy next time. It can show the real condition of the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK
The book is in good quality, but I received the wrong edition. Then I refund my money.

1-0 out of 5 stars If your prof requires this book, then you should invest in a supplement
This is my second semester of using this book, and it is awful. The authors will introduce concepts as if you already know them without explaining them. Also this book is heavy into referring other books to read to learn more about the concepts, which is not helpful in the least because they fail to even explain anything. If you are assigned this book, invest in a supplement because otherwise you will be lost! The Examples & Explanations is very good, but what supplement you need can vary from professor to professor because each can approach the ideas in different ways.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book Reseller
Book was clearly marked "not for resale". Good deal but not exactly what I thought I was buying

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Casebook
zanandjayna's review sums up much about how I feel about this casebook.

Other complaints that I had is that the notes/comments sections are quite poor and are usually of little relevance tothe case and/or concept you just studied. Also many of the cases have been poorly edited, leaving out key concepts that most prof's expect you to know.

All in all, this is a poor casebook. If you use it i recommend a good supplement.

2-0 out of 5 stars I passionately hate this book.
This is quite simply the most boring book I've read since graduating from high school.I give it two stars because it is very detailed and would undoubtedly be helpful if I were studying for a history test.As a US law student, it is difficult for me to separate the wheat from the chaff.I have no idea what's important because it's all given equal weight.Furthermore, the writing sounds like an eigth grader putting facts into their own words.Every sentence starts: Noun, verb.No variety in structure, no "voice."

Avoid this text if possible.If not, be prepared and drink lots of caffeine before starting an assignment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitive but boring
I bought this book because it was recommended by the University of Maastricht (Netherlands) as a textbook to study for the entrance exam that must be passed for non-lawyers to take their Master's course in European Law. I also recently saw it as part of the library of the Munich Intellectual Property Law institute - a program I am also considering.

This book provides definitive coverage of European law and some community institutions. The index, table of cases and acronym definitions are thorough. The history of the European Union and European institutions is laid out and important paragraphs from numerous European Court decisions are quoted and their implications are analyzed.

It is also incredibly boring to read. No author can save the mind-numbing decisions of the European Court. The convoluted and nearly impenetrable language is almost beyond mortal understanding. However, the analysis is also very dry - and while the cause of objectivity is a noble one, an occasional subjective opinion can make a book far more readable. The authors also occasionally refer to cases before explaining them - giving the impression that the book was, at least partially, compiled from previously written articles. This is a bit irritating - particularly in a 3rd edition, you would think that sort of thing would have been filtered out in the previous two versions.

Despite its flaws, this book is useful as a reference and has value for anyone making a serious study of European Law. I would not recommend trying to read it cover-to-cover. How about taking a stand in the next edition? Spice things up a little. In Hartley's, European Union Law in a Global Context, the author makes his point of view known throughout the book, and while the reader may not always agree - it makes the material ever so much more interesting. It would be nice to see something similar from Craig and De Burca, particularly since this book appears to be considered definitive by at least 2 European academic institutions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best
I used this book in England where it is the standard text.I'm now studying EU law in the US and am struggling through Bermann, Goebal et al (West 2002).Craig & De Burca is a clear and comprehensive exposition of all the substantive EU law.It also provides some structural background on the EU, though admittedly not as much as the Bermann book and therefore possibly not as much as is necessary for a standard US law school course.Nevertheless for anyone who wants a clearer understanding of EU law, I cannot recommend this book more highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This is the most detailed and best written textbook on EU law that I have seen so far. I use it as a reference all the time.

Product Description
The Fourth Edition of Elder Law integrates new developments in law and policy into the familiar framework of past editions. A mix of the specific and the general, the book examines the response of our society to an aging population, the legal rights of the elderly, and the legal, economic, and health challenges of the elderly. The authors use carefully edited classic and new cases, excerpts from the experts, and descriptive commentary to challenge and instruct students. Questions and problems provide the instructor an opportunity to query students and expand their understanding of the material.The perspectives of legal practice and legislative development receive due attention in chapters that cover income and employment, housing and supportive services, nursing home quality and costs, substitute health and final decision making, and elders and crime. The broad scope of the book builds on foundational legal education in property rights, civil and human rights, and government action, while permitting the teacher the opportunity to supplement or expand upon the material. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
For more than two decades, Health Law: Cases, Materials and Problems has defined the field of health law, providing a balanced overview of law as it affects patients, professionals, institutions, and entities that deliver and finance U.S. health care. Health Law comprehensively treats topics concerns such as the oversight of quality (including the latest developments in patient safety), cost control (including consumer-directed health care), guarantees of adequate access to services, exempt-organization tax issues, transactions and relationships among health care professionals and providers, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), and malpractice litigation. Written without a policy bias to fairly reflect all viewpoints, the book considers legal and ethical issues involving death, human reproduction, medical treatment decision making, and medical research. It also explores the government's efforts to control costs and expand access through Medicare and Medicaid and examines government attempts to police anticompetitive activities, fraud, and abuse. Using carefully edited primary materials and effective classroom-tested problems, the book exposes students to the core issues in health law. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OK
The book was in decent shape. It had quite a bit of notes in the margin and highlighting. I was expecting it to have minimal amounts of the things described above. It works though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Health Law Book
The item was in very good shape for a used book.It looked basically like new.Shipping could have been quicker, but all in all, it was well worth the cheaper cost compared to new....Thanks Amazon....

5-0 out of 5 stars great purchase
great purchase ... came in perfect condition and quickly ... exceeded my expectations!

3-0 out of 5 stars Review of Health Law: Cases and Materials
This book offers a comprehensive review of various issues in Health Law.It covers topics ranging from ERISA to Stem Cell Research.The authors did a great job researching each topic but did not really organize the information efficiently.They could have done a better job of using more extensive and topic organized notes sections after cases to explain complex issues like ERISA preemption or embryo parental rights.As a result, many times I felt the cases were compiled without really allowing the reader to understand the significance of each case with respect to the topic at hand.

1-0 out of 5 stars Failure to Receive
I ordered this book and it was supposedly delivered to me house and signed for. But I have never nor anyone in my family ever seen it. I am not sure if this is a mix up by my family, the company or the delivery people. Though when I e-mailed the company I felt like they were not willing to work with me to find the book. If you order i'd just make sure you know when they are delivering are sign for the book yourself. If it gets delivered to the right place at all. ... Read more
