Product Description
As the number and size of nonprofit organizations continues to grow, NFPs are coming under ever-increasing government scrutiny. Soon Congress will require that nonprofits comply with rigorous accounting and governance standards very similar to those set forth for for-profits in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.

If you work for a nonprofit and are concerned about meeting impending changes to tax and finance standards governing NFPs this book is for you. In simple, straight-forward language, this guide demystifies the often perplexing world of nonprofit governance in the age of Sarbanes-Oxley. Author, Jill Gilbert Welytok, an attorney who heads the Sarbanes-Oxley division of a major Midwest law firm, walks you step-by-step through the process of evaluating your governance structures. She arms you with tips and strategies for adopting uniform standards under current governance and tax laws, while preparing you for any upcoming changes. She shows you how to protect your tax status and reassure donors and volunteers while staying true to your organization’s mission. And she fills you in on what you need to know to:

  • Comply with state laws and regulations
  • Get and keep tax–exempt status
  • Avoid lawsuits and other legal landmines
  • Handle the media
  • Anticipate future trends
  • Make sense of the Sarbanes–Oxley act

Including sample nonprofit bylaws and a complete audit committee report, Nonprofit Law & Governance for Dummies, Second Edition is an indispensable survival tool for 21st century nonprofits. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview/Start
This book is a good overview, if you are just starting, but you will need other references for more indepth knowledge to understand the subject adequately.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased
I was very pleased with this book.It is full of important information and explained in a very clear and easily understood way.I definately recommend this book for anyone who is starting up, or already involved with a non profit looking to better understand the process.

4-0 out of 5 stars Made me feel much better prepared.
A very helpful book for anyone starting, operating, or directing a small nonprofit. It covers some material (e.g., SOX compliance, foundation structure) which I suspect would only be useful to people who are more likely to hire a lawyer than read a For Dummies book; however, much of it is quite applicable to small churches, community organizations, or other small-scale operations. Hopefully the executive director of the American Red Cross has moved on to more advanced texts.

Broadly, the book deals with two topics: the regulatory interfaces a non-profit must be prepared to navigate and how a non-profit should be structured from the standpoint of strategic management. If you are starting from near-zero knowledge of these two topics, you will end up feeling much better prepared when you're done.

My primary interest in reading the book was to be better informed about a professional association I have recently become involved with. Most of the book--and indeed, most of the non-profit sector--is geared toward traditional charitable organizations, but it does go to lengths to explain the differences between the different kinds of of non-profit structures recognized by the IRS. I'm glad to have read it.

(Note that I'm neither a tax lawyer nor a CPA, so I only *feel* like I've been helped. Still, I trust Wiley to have vetted their authors well.) ... Read more

Tracing war as a legal concept from Roman times through to the twentieth century, Stephen Neff reveals its various roles as a law-enforcement operation, duel between states and a "crime against the peace."He also considers the post World War II definition of war as an international law-enforcement mechanism under U.N. auspices. Although unsuccessful, this attempt did help transform war into a humanitarian, rather than a policy problem. This book interests historians, students of international relations and international lawyers. ... Read more

Product Description
This study focuses on a Muslim legal science known in Arabic as usul al-fiqh. Whereas the kindred science of fiqh is concerned with the articulation of actual rules of law, this science elaborates the theoretical and methodological foundations of the law.

The Spirit of Islamic Law outlines the prominent features of Muslim juristic thought: espousal of divine sovereignty; a fixation on divine texts; an uncompromisingly intentionalist approach to the interpretation of those texts; a frank acknowledgment of the fallibility of human endeavor to capture divine intent; a toleration of legal diversity; a moralistic bent grounded in a particular social vision; and finally, a preoccupation with the affairs of private individuals--especially family relations and contracts--coupled with a concern to define the limits of governmental power.

The Spirit of Islamic Law is the fifth book in Georgia's Spirit of Laws series, which illuminates the nature of legal systems throughout the world.

3-0 out of 5 stars Stuffy
This was the first book I pick up regarding the Muslim religion and I recommend starting somewhere else. This book is written with great detail which one may think is a good thing but I personally though made it a trying read. I was forced to re-read several paragraphs just to grasp the concepts. This book digs into the seeming complicated religious law but without adding any real life to it. I do recommend if your aim is to understand a fully as possible. It did mention several concepts other books did not.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting But Sprawling
I read this recently for my seminar on Islamic law.Weiss brings up some great insights as he discusses Islamic law, but I found many of his chapters to be meandering works where I got a little lost.He never uses section headings within a chapter and sometimes I found myself unclear about where he was going with his ideas. It's a very dense text and makes the best sense when reread. Also, as a student, I found the skimpy index unhelpful when I needed to go on a treasure hunt for a buried quote.

5-0 out of 5 stars The history of how such laws were formulated makes for an involving read
Muslim legal science is a science connected to yet separate from Islamic faith, and THE SPIRIT OF ISLAMIC LAW delves into these connections and differences, examining the main features of Muslim jurisdiction and law, divine texts which are used as legal foundations, interpretations in the attempt to capture the devine as it relates to legal matters, and more. Author Bernard Weiss is a professor of Arabic and Islamic studies at the University of Utah: his treatise is both detailed yet accessible to college-level readers studying Islamic traditions. The history of how such laws were formulated makes for an involving read.

Although this book is admittedly not the most accessible one in it's class, it is one of the most useful if you have the time and desire to delve into the issues of sex and the law in depth. The book is comprised almost entirely of court decisions, and as such is an invaluable compendium of source material. Product Description
Legal thought in this country has always focused on the rules rather than on the persons affected by the rules. Persons and Masks of the Law restores the balance by taking a person-centered view of the law. The author shows how even great jurists have chosen the "masks of the law" over persons, his surprising examples being Thomas Jefferson, George Wythe, Benjamin Cardozo, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.--four of the greatest lawyers of the United States.Noonan discusses how the concept of property, applied to a person, is a perfect mask since no trace of human identity remains. An auction of slaves in Virginia, the takeover of a banana plantation in Costa Rica, and an accident on the Long Island railroad are the famous cases involving these four legal giants. The stories of the litigations at three different periods of our history provide and new and powerful analyses of American law. This book, breaking through the formalism in which jurisprudence is enshrined, offers a new vision of law and represents a call for reform in the education and even behavior of lawyers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Expose of "The Law"
Dr. Noonan's book, "Persons and Masks of the Law" is the best I have read in terms of informing its readers of what really goes on below the surface of what we commonly consider to be "The Law."It shows its undersurface, and how it is invariably a question of the personalities and prejudices of those who administer the law.Noonan's mind, and analyses are brilliant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarly Analysis of an American Legal Phenomenom
Combining a fascinating legal analysis with legal history, [now Senior Judge] John Noonan has written a fine book. Tracing the jurisprudence of some major legal minds from three different periods in American history, Noonan demonstrates how a preoccupation with LAW as a detached set of rules with a life of its own can lead to the obscuring of the human element in law.

Rules are clearly necessary to an orderly society and to the adjudication of disputes between parties, but rules are conceived of in the minds of people and are applied by people to cases and controversies involving people. An overemphasis upon law as a detached science of rules can allow for the creation of rules that obscure the humanity of people who are subjected to them. These sorts of rules Noonan describes as "masks." (Masks are to be distinguished from "roles," which people assume, but which they are not consumed by.)

Noonan's chronicling of George Wythe and (his student) Thomas Jefferson's legal involvements with the old slave codes provides a stark example of how masks have been used in the history of American law. That section was particularly interesting from a scholarly and historical standpoint, as Noonan describes them in all their utter brutishness, proceeding to delve into the (hypocritical) political, economic and social purposes for which they were created.

Also interesting is Noonan's analysis of Oliver Wendell Holmes' legal thinking and how that thinking was employed in the U.S. Supreme Court case of American Banana Co. v. United Fruit Co. (1909). In this reviewer's opinion, there is greater moral ambiguity in the case of sovereign immunity than there is with chattel slavery, but Holmes clearly employed a mask in the American Banana case. Noonan does a fine job of describing the backdrop to the case and all the major players involved in the litigation.

Finally, Noonan discusses Cardozo's masking of the plaintiff in the infamous Palsgraf case from the New York Court of Appeals. This was fun to read, as Palsgraf is one of those cases all law students read in their first-year torts classes.

It would probably prove too much to say that this book has appeal for a wide audience. In all likelihood, only those who are seriously interested in legal scholarship and legal history will find it of interest. Much of the analysis takes place at a high level of abstraction. But given that the book is originally based upon a prestigious serious of law lectures, it should satisfy its intended audience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it twice, at least
I picked this up at the urging of my career services office, and I was not disappointed.Upbeat, friendly, straightforward, and accessible, the book is both helpful and encouraging.

Some of the advice may not seem profound--most of us know to be nice to support staff and many of us know which water glass at a formal dinner is ours--but you are bound to learn a few new things. Considering how much is at stake, it probably isn't a bad idea to review even some of the basics either.

I also think the book helped me secure my summer clerkship--especially the discussions of the economics of law firms and the insights into how hiring partners think.

3-0 out of 5 stars Um...yeah
This book is well written and has a lot of do's and don'ts of the practical legal world. The author speaks a lot about what to do on the job and frequently gives a few good ideas. A huge percentage of those ideas are supported by real-life anecdotes from various legal professionals. The major problem I had with it, is that throughout almost the entire book I kept finding myself saying, "Yeah, duh." As just one of many many potential examples, there is an anecodote about a summer clerk who goes into a firm, whines that he needs his own office and is allowed to use the office of a lawyer who is out sick. The lawyer wants to connect to her computer from home, so the summer clerk is told he absolutely cannot touch the computer. The clerk does so anyway thus preventing the lawyer from being able to connect to the computer and gaining for the clerk the contempt of everyone in the office. There are a lot of little stories like this where somebody does something just blatantly stupid (and a smaller number where somebody does something blatantly correct). Some of the stories are amusing but are almost always connected to advice that seems really obvious. If you think you have really poor judgement then by all means read this book.

I also found the organization a little irritating. There were no distinct chapter breaks. Although it's got a very methodical organization scheme, it READS as though it's one big continuous text. I like to read at night and stop at the end of a chapter. I kept feeling as though if I were to stop reading I would be cutting an idea midstream and that irritated the heck out of me.

In the book's defense, it is well written and the text flows nicely. There's a wonderfully colloquial feel to how it reads.
I've been reading a lot of law school prep-type books of late and this one was not my favorite. It's not terrible, but it doesn't seem entirely useful to me either.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent book, but mostly common sense.
This book was very informative as far as a typical 9-5 workday of a lawyer, but most of her strategies are common sense. Seriously, anyone who doesn't know business manners shoudln't be a lawyer anyway. Its common sense to dress appropriately, to never crack raunchy jokes to a partner, or to speak of how hot another attorney's wife is. If you have any common sense, spend your money on a more practical book with better advice or educational value.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read it early in law school.
Great advice on making the most out of clerkships, classes, professors, law review, and volunteering opportunities that arise in law school.I wish I had read this book before going to law school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful at any point...
I'm a starting 1L at Univ. of Houston Law this Fall and bought this book initially because the title got my attention. Boiled down, it's a refreshingly informal "How to" guide for summer internships and new associates. Some of the advice (e.g. on etiquette) might strike you as "Yeah, well of course...everyone knows that", but that doesn't mean we can't benefit from the occasional reminder! The bulk of the advice in the book though will be new information and most helpful in avoiding the common pitfalls...someone else has been there already and either done it very well or done it very badly - this book helps you benefit from their experiences.
There's commentary throughout from practicing law firm recruiters, associates, partners, professors - seems that input is included from just about every facet of the legal world. The book is primarily of value (I think) for it's new associate centric advice (versus summer internship or while you're in law school). That being said, as a soon to be 1L it was definitely valuable to me to get a sense beforehand of how law firms do business (particularly before I even begin shopping for internships.
I say buy it, it was definitely worth the time/cost, particularly because it's so easy to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid
Good Intro to Am Law. Straight forward. I'm taking a class from the teacher right now and he's pretty good.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good as a broad survey, but a little tedious at times
I just finished reading this book because it is on the suggested reading list that I received from the law school I am entering this fall.As far as a broad survey which puts the American legal system in a broad context, this book does a very good job. However, as I got to the last hundred pages or so, it turned to a lengthy and at times redundant expression of a thesis that the author had already suggested several times in the book. And really, like a lot of scholarly arguments, this one isn't all that enlightening. What would have been more useful (for me at least) is a more indepth treatment of the specific subject matter which the chapters are divided into. For this kind of survey I would suggest Law 101 by Jay M. Feinman

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the American legal system
If you want a reasonably good understanding of the what, how, and why of the American legal system without having to go to law and grad school, this is the book for you.Friedman, in just over 300 pages of text, manages to cover the entire field of law in America, from legislation through administration to judgment, from the workings of the local sewer district to the trappings of the Supreme Court.

Friedman is a renowned legal scholar, but this should not scare away the legal neophyte. He has done a remarkable thing for a renowned scholar to do -- he has written an introduction that truly is an introduction! The writing is clear, straightforward, and devoid of all but the most essential legal jargon, and, when the jargon is unavoidable, it is clearly explained.Further, the book is notable for its lack of endless recitation of court decisions. While Friedman disscusses most of the important cases, he does not expect the reader to slog through them. And he is excellent at connecting the cases -- and the law in general -- to real-life events easily within the experience of ordinary people.

If you are already familiar with American law you will probably learn nothing new here.It is, nevertheless, a good, refreshing read. Finally, for those of us that teach in this area, particularly in undergraduate education, this is an excellent teaching book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Notes for a Longer Book
I don't know why The Ages of American Law is regarded as a classic of American legal history. It's clearly written but tries to cover way too much ground in a very short space (111 pages of text with large print and big margins).Based on a series of lectures, The Ages of American Law strings together short observations on legal topics ranging from Lord Mansfield to the development of the Uniform Commercial Code.No subject is developed in depth:at best, the "book" is notes for a real book. One of my professors at law school used to rave about this book.It must have been because he's mentioned favorably in an endnote.

4-0 out of 5 stars engaging intellectual history
A very interesting history of American law, useful for those about to enter the legal profession or enroll in law school, or anyone wishing to learn more about the history of ideas in law.

5-0 out of 5 stars A concise classic.
When Lawrence M. Friedman wrote his landmark "A History of American Law," he remarked that American legal history has been a neglected field. Some progress (although not enough) has been made in the field since Friedmanpublished his History in 1973. Part of that progress has been thepublication of Grant Gilmore's little book, "The Ages of American Law,"which is justly considered to be a classic. The book is based on thelectures Gilmore gave during the 150th Anniversary of Yale Law School forthe Storrs Lecture Series in 1974. Although "The Ages of American Law" isan "expanded" version of the Storrs Lectures, the book is still remarkablefor its concision as well as for its clarity. Gilmore does not purport tooffer an authoritative history of American law in the same vein asFriedman's History. Rather, he captures the grand sweep of history andcondenses it into a gem of 154 pages. It remains in print nearlytwenty-five years after first publication for good reason-it is well worthreading. ... Read more

"An excellent collection of original essays . . .the current volume shines by being able to introduce these disparate approaches on emotions into a shared discourse."-The Law and Politics Book Review

"A fascinating and wide-ranging series on the role that emotion plays in the legal order."-Jack Balkin

The Passions of Law is the first anthology to treat the role that emotions play, don't play, and ought to play in the practice and conception of law and justice. Lying at the intersection of law, psychology, and philosophy, this emergent field of law scholarship raises some of the most profound and interesting questions at the heart of jurisprudence. For example, what role do emotions ranging from disgust to compassion play in the decision-making processes of judges, lawyers, juries, and clients? What emotions belong in which legal contexts? Is there a hierarchy of emotions, and, if so, through what sources do we identify it? To what extent are emotions subject to change or tutelage? How can we evaluate the role of emotion in such disparate contexts as death sentencing, laws about same sex marriage, hate crime legislation, punitive damages or shaming penalties?

Consisting of original essays by leading scholars of law, theology, political science, and philosophy, The Passions of Law contributes to ongoing efforts to humanize law and reveals how this previously unacknowledged aspect of decision-making exerts a much greater impact on justice and the practice of law than most tend, or like, to think.Susan Bandes ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Justice Is Not Blind
Any institution has its myths and legends. One of the most enduring myths in law is that good decision making is devoid of emotion. The image we have of justice is a blindfolded decision maker holding scales.

SusanBandes' book, The Passions of Law, explodes the myth that emotion has noplace in law. She has collected essays from some of the most respectedlegal theorists, philosophers and jurists of our time: Martha Nussbaum,Austin Sarat, Martha Minow, Chesire Calhoun, John Deigh, Danielle Allen,Dan Kahan, Robert Solomon, Toni Massaro, William Ian Miller, JeffrieMurphy, Samuel Pillsbury, and Richard Posner. Emotions are rampant in law,the essayists observe, and often they are central to good decision making. For example, we allow defenses to murder for crimes committed in the heatof passion; in capital cases some states require juries to find a murderwas "heinous, atrocious or cruel" before imposing a death sentence.

Thetheorists tackle a range of emotions - compassion, mercy, anger, vengeance, hatred, romantic love, remorse, and shame. One of the most intriguingcolloquys is a debate between Yale law professor Dan Kahan and Universityof Chicago law, philosophy and divinity professor Martha Nussbaum on thepropriety of considering disgust in law.Kahan advocates that disgust "isessential to accurate moral perception" and makes an interesting case whyliberals should embrace disgust as a means of expressing social outrage: itis, for example, the idea behind enhanced penalties for hate crimes. Nussbaum counters that disgust has "been at the root of gross evilsthroughout history, prominently including misogyny, antisemitism, andloathing of homosexuals." Other theorists write about the invisibility ofemotions, the relations between emotion and reason, and the reconstructiverole of the legal system in shaping emotions.

The collected essayscontain discussions of the most famous and provocative trials, legalissues, and atrocities of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: OscarWilde's trial for obscenity, au pair Louise Woodward's murder trial, thetrial of O.J. 2-0 out of 5 stars It looked new but...
I ordered the Entertainment Law book from the amazon store becasue I wanted to purchase a new book, without highlights or writing in it, but I received the book with the bind holding on by the seams (literally)!Because I was so pressed for time and did not want to wait another 4-5 days to return it, I kept the book.Other than the unraveling book, the delivery was prompt and book appeared to be in good condition

2-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Helpful
I would basically have to agree with Jen's review about this book. There are too many cases, the book is huge and the font is small...especially in the notes sections. The inclusion of various types of contracts has its plusses and minuses. I feel as if the contracts are stuck in the book in their entirety, but they're not necessarily explained. Thus, even if you're in law school, you're reading the contracts, not understanding the language and then not getting an explanation of the contracts. It's almost the same as reading the contracts as a complete layperson. The worst part is that there are tons of these contracts. Someone who taught this course as an adjunct at my law school assigned pretty much all the contracts in the book to read.

Obviously, they are not captivating reading, so if you're in this position you can get stuck reading boring contracts that you don't understand and a professor who assigns all these contracts to read but doesn't explain them well enough--either because he's a lawyer in this field and it makes way more sense to him than to you and/or because he's a practicing attorney rather than a real law professor and, thus, doesn't really know how to teach. I think both applied in my situation, and, unfortunately, people teaching entertainment law oftentimes will be practicing attorneys and/or completely over your head with knowledge.

I don't feel as if this book is well-written, and sometimes the contracts aren't the only things that don't make sense or aren't explained well enough. Terms are thrown out or descriptions/explanations of the industry are given sometimes in ways that don't help someone who knows nothing about it...or at least doesn't know about the areas being covered by a particular chapter. I'm not just talking about the legal aspects; I am also referring to the actual industry itself and the way things work in it. That makes this book much worse than the average legal casebook. And with the size of this book--and, as a result, the amount of material covered in it--a lot of stuff that doesn't always make sense is thrown at you, and that's hard to deal with, even for a law student. And with other books I've seen and/or read on the market that explain the entertainment industry, this book could easily be less in-depth/complicated and shorter, even including the same amount of cases.

In other words, this book is just not brought down to a dummy's level enough, or even enough to be taught in law school. And it takes what should be an interesting subject and makes it completely devoid of intrigue. For people who are interested in this book outside of school reading and want to know more about the intersection of business, entertainment and/or law, this is not the book to read or refer to. What I did like about this book is when I could understand it, it presented a lot of interesting cases and information about the industry, even in its complicated contracts. Still, professors and teachers, please find a better textbook if you're using this to teach...or arrange your class lectures in a way that breaks the book down in English!

3-0 out of 5 stars Has room for improvement...
1. There are too many cases to illustrate the same point. For example, the Remedies section does not nearly need to be as long as it is. The bankruptcy section would be just as adequate and informative with 2-3 cases and more commentary. The agency rules chapter and the chapter on literary publishing also have this same problem: it is repetitive and there are too many cases with the same point. Some of the cases would have been been just as effective as a note case.

2. The size of the font for the note cases are too small and sometimes, an eye strain to read. I understand that there is a concern for the length of the book, but with the first suggestion and using thinner pages may fix this. (this book uses paper that is considerably thicker than your average law book). Also, sometimes, with the center justification alignment for the note cases, it squeezes the sentences together, it's almost impossible to read. (see page 199, note 3, the third line --the entire line is practically one word).

3. On the plus side, I do like how the book goes through entertainment agreements. For example, the detailed discussions on music publishing agreements with comments after each provision were very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best law book I've had in school
In law school, textbooks are generally written, edited, and typeset to be uniformly hard to read. This book, on the other hand, is lucid and interesting as well as covering the important parts of case and statutory law. It's well-organized, and the font and line spacing make it easy on the eyes and comprehensible during late-night studying. For the first time in law school, I found myself reading weeks ahead of the syllabus just for the enjoyment of reading. If all law books were this good, JDs would learn a lot more in school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Working With It
Prof. Warren is quite well respected. Some students rate this as a great case book.Others really dislike it. If the book is assigned to you buy it and work with it.You can always supplement the book with other books that people find helpful. For an introduction to Chapter 11 Business Reorganizations, I recommendChapter 11 Business Reorganizations: For Business Leaders, Accountants And Lawyers. If you course will also cover other forms of bankrutptcy, I would also purchase Bankruptcy And Debtor/creditor: Examples And Explanations (Examples & Explanations).

2-0 out of 5 stars We worked it out.
The book was not in the proposed condition, this is a negative for me.But we were able to work it out and I am satisfied with the result.

5-0 out of 5 stars More engaging than my teacher.
As a student, this was probably the best textbook I've ever used. The authors presented the material in an engaging way that brings out the relevance, controversy, and centrality of creditor/debtor/bankruptcy law in the life of almost every American. I never thought I'd say this about a textbook, but it's a great read.

2-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst casebooks
This is one of the worst casebooks ever written, although it wont stop the sales because most students do not have a choice of textbooks. The book is poorly edited and leaves out crucial pieces of information (such as which statute is relevant). The book is also in an order that is not conducive to learning the material. ... Product Description
Audiences: A textbook for undergraduate courses in sport law. A reference for libraries; sport administrators; sport officials; event, facility, and sport managers; and paralegals researching legal issues in sport.

A comprehensive text on legal issues in sport, Introduction to Sport Law delivers the information students will need and sport management professionals require in order to navigate liability issues, protect the legal rights of their employees and athletes, and manage legal risk in their professions. Filled with real-world cases and examples, the text provides students with timely and relevant information that will help build enthusiasm for their future careers.

The outstanding author team presents legal issues in sport using a topical approach that is easily understood by readers with little or no legal background. Using straightforward, jargon-free explanations, Introduction to Sport Law guides readers through the major legal areas specific to the sport setting--including the legal system, tort law, risk management, contract law, agency law, employment law, constitutional law, gender equity, intellectual property, and antitrust law. The text is designed for sport law courses within a sport management program and uses concise examples relevant to sport managers.

Introduction to Sport Law begins with an overview of the legal system and presentation of legal foundations to give readers a context in which to consider subsequent chapters. Through its focus on legal concepts with direct application to the sport manager's role and a straightforward presentation devoid of legalese, Introduction to Sport Law provides readers with a resource that is more approachable and relevant than other sport law texts:

  • Within each chapter, a brief introduction places the topic within a practical context.
  • Legal perspectives of each topic are presented with clear explanations of related concepts.
  • Extended, sport-related examples obtained from case law provide application of legal concepts, stimulate discussion about the application of law to current events, and enable students and sport managers to recognize possible areas of liability.
  • A running glossary provides convenient access to definitions of unfamiliar terms.
  • Chapters conclude with a brief recapitulation of important points, discussion questions, and hypothetical sport law scenarios.
In each chapter, the hypothetical scenarios serve as the basis for moot court group activities. Developed from the facts of several key cases relating to the chapter topic, these moot court experiences provide students with an interactive and lively way of understanding issues that may arise in a court setting and how cases may determine future law. As students call hypothetical witnesses to testify and argue various sides of a case, they are challenged to conceptualize and apply the concepts of sport law.

When adopted as a course textbook, Introduction to Sport Law also includes online access to an instructor guide, test package, and presentation package. The online instructor guide provides the structure and offers suggestions for group activities of the moot court cases in each chapter. The test and presentation packages fully incorporate and enhance the information presented in the text.

Introduction to Sport Law provides the most comprehensive and understandable presentation of legal issues in sport. This approach, specifically geared toward readers without a law background, allows students not only to learn the important concepts of sport law but also to get excited about a topic that can otherwise seem dry and technical. The incorporation of many real-world examples will assist readers in developing a knowledge base with clear application to their future or current sport professions.

Test package. The test package, created with Respondus 2.0, includes a bank of 110 questions in multiple-choice, true-or-false, and short answer formats.

Presentation package. The presentation package for Introduction to Sport Law, includes approximately 178 PowerPoint slides that highlight the key concepts from the book that instructors can use for class discussion and illustration.

The slides in the presentation package can be used directly within PowerPoint or printed to make transparencies or handouts for distribution to students. Instructors can easily add, modify, and rearrange the order of the slides as well as search for content based on key words. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentally Practical!
I'm really digging into this book and appreciate the smooth writing, the references and the locations of websites and exercises in this book.

Most of the material is practical and valuable to the law student who wants to know what to expect in the real world.Since I'm IN the real world already, I can relate to a lot of examples relating to attorneys whose bad communication skills and dismal management styles make working in the legal field tough.

The book gives solutions to these problems in simple, easy to understand terms.

The CD that is with the book is not that useful, since the majority of the CD material is repeated in the back of each chapter.

Also, the number of spelling errors is enough to make me wonder about the editor and publisher, especially when a student is spending over a hundred bucks on this book!"Confidentiatilty" is a new word to me![Should be "Confidentiality"].

Outside of these errors, not a badly written book.Recommend for the fifth edition that the editor go over the text with a fine-blue pencil!

2-0 out of 5 stars good

5-0 out of 5 stars Most excellent textbook
I highly recommend this book on contracts.I am taking a paralegal "Contracts" class and have completed the course except for the final exam.

Definitions of legalisms are very clear and are included in the book (though you will find you must get the paperback version of Black's Law Dictionary), the index to the book is quite useful.Examples are always given and are clear.

The book will also act as a future reference for me when I am analyzing a contract. Each chapter concludes with a "paralegal checklist" that summarizes the subject at hand so you can double-check the contract you are reading to see that everything is correct.

I believe this textbook is part of a new breed of textbooks.I found, for a parallel example, that Michael Sullivan's book on Algebra and Trigonometry is a miracle of thoroughness and clarity, considering the subject, and that this book is a "miracle" of clarity, again considering it is a legal textbook, and the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well organized, but needs more examples
I am in a love/hate relationship with this book!On the up side, it is very well organized. In fact, it reads like a really, really good set of notes. On the down side, although it is well organized, it ONLY reads like a really, really good set of notes.

I am presently using this book in an online paralegal course and find myself going online constantly to hunt for examples or explanations of the definitions. It would really help for the authors to provide more examples and maybe even answers to selected questions.

On the other hand, if you are trying to plow through a wordy text and need a good, organized synopsis of the material, this is the book for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
It's an okay book.A source of frustration with it is the frequent use of exercise questions without then explaining the answers. That may work in traditional classroom where class discussion and a teacher are involved, but it does not work for the lone reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for paralegals too
This book is considered a text, but I've given it to my paralegal staff to use as a brush-up/refresher course in contract law. It's well written and covers the essentials of the area in a solid progression of topics. ... Read more

Product Description
Law can be viewed as a body of rules and legal sanctions that channel behavior in socially desirable directions - for example, by encouraging individuals to take proper precautions to prevent accidents or by discouraging competitors from colluding to raise prices. The incentives created by the legal system are thus a natural subject of study by economists. Moreover, given the importance of law to the welfare of societies, the economic analysis of law merits prominent treatment as a subdiscipline of economics. This two volume Handbook is intended to foster the study of the legal system by economists.

*Chapters prepared by leading specialists of the area.
