Excerpt:Hmong Insurgency item Belligerents item Laos government Vietnam : Hmong insurgents item Casualties and losses item : 2,000-3,000 The Hmong Insurgency is a military conflict between the Lao People's Army and members of the former "Secret Army ", whom it has persecuted since their defeat in the Laotian Civil War around 1975. History The conflict stems from three events prior to Laos independence: a failed coup attempt by the Red Prince, Hmong aiding the French in Xieng Khoung against Lao and Vietnamese forces, and the French giving Hmong rights to Laos as equal to the Lao. In 1946 Prince Souphanouvang and his brothers Souvanna Phouma and Phetsarath overthrew Laos King and imprisoned him in a pig pen. Touby Lyfoung, a Hmong leader, led a combined French, Lao, and Hmong force to relieve the Village of Xieng Khoung from a combined Lao and Vietnamese force and saving the French representative in the village. After the victory in Xieng Khoung, Lyfoung led a Hmong force to Luang Phrabang and rescued the King from the pig pen ending the coup. In return for his service, the French offered to make Laos a Hmong country but Lyfong declined instead accepting a partnership with the Lao people. Two plaques symbolizing the agreement were placed in the King's palace in Luang Phrabang. After the failed coup, Souphanouvang went to Vietnam for assistance. In 1960, Kong Le joined the Red Prince in his second coup attempt but Vang Pao and the Hmong were in the way. With Kong Le coming from Vientiane and Vietnamese troops approaching from the East, Vang Pao accepted the US assistance and prevented the coup again. Under the leadership of the General Vang Pao ... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lao Tzu
a great book for people who are interested in the philosophy and the practices of the earliest "Daoists". Many of the best modern scholars have contributed essays to this book, such as Liu Xiaogan, Robert Henricks, Harold Roth, Philip Ivanhoe and Isabelle Robinet. Check out the sample pages available above. Liu Xiaogan's 24-page essay examining Ziran ("naturalness and spontaneity") is my personal favourite. I believe that this "concept" is the most important one in all of the Daoist philosophy. Ivanhoe brings to light some aspects of De (Virtue - Power) that previous scholars have overlooked. Isabelle Robinet also wrote a good essay illustrating, by comparison, the various interpretations of many past "experts".

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Kung Lao is a fictional character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. Kung Lao is a former Shaolin monk and a member of the former White Lotus Society. He stands in the shadow of his great ancestor, the Great Kung Lao, but unlike his great ancestor he has no desire to be champion and would rather live a life of peace. He is close friends to the Mortal Kombat champion Liu Kang as well, he has sought counsel from master Bo' Rai Cho. Of the Earthrealm warriors, Kung Lao is the most outspoken pacifist, although he will not hesitate to severely punish those who attack him, Earthrealm, or his friends. His trademark is his razor-rimmed hat, which he can employ quite powerfully and effectively in combat. Kung Lao's attacks are based upon wind-type moves. His most notable attack is the Hat Toss, which could be directed in Mortal Kombat 2 and Mortal Kombat 3, beginning in Mortal Kombat Gold his hat could not be directed. Many of his fatalities involve the use of his hat to some extent. ... Read more

Product Description
Achren deftly weaves Lao voices into a series of narratives to reveal how Lao values are enacted at classroom, management and policy level in an educational change process. With a development assistance project serving as a lens for viewing broader development issues, the study engages in debates within critical development studies and applied linguistics, and draws on understandings from sociology. It is argued that the cultural underpinnings of Lao pre-colonial, Buddhist-legitimated social organisation has continued to influence the values and priorities of the ethnic Lao throughout their history of foreign domination and their more recent political embracing of Marxism-Leninism. The study then examines the disjunctions between these values and those of the dominant development discourse with its roots in the Eurocentric notion of modernity. Ultimately, the actions of culturally knowledgeable Lao agents present us with a glimpse of a distinctly Lao alternative development possibility. As a result, this book contributes to a deeper, more nuanced understanding of appropriate development assistance from Lao socio-cultural perspectives. ... Read more

Product Description

The major international recognition of a World Heritage Site designation can bring important preservation efforts and a wealth of tourist dollars to an impoverished area—but it can also have destructive side effects. In a revealing study with lessons for tourism and preservation projects around the world, this book examines the redevelopment and packaging of Luang Prabans, Laos, as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites that “belong to all peoples of the world, irrespective of the territory on which they are located.” It tells the story of how the world’s most prestigious preservation initiative led to a management plan designed to attract tourists and global capital, which in turn developed the most “appealing” parts of the city while destroying or neglecting other areas. This book makes a valuable contribution to tourism and heritage studies and international development.

Product Description
In ancient China, a man called Lao-Tse followed a vision of truth thatculminated in one of the most sublime religious texts known to humankind: the Tao Te Ching. Itssimple profundity is recognized today in every corner of the world: "The Tao which can be told isnot the eternal Tao. The name which can be named is not the eternal name."

So it begins and moves gracefully through the various paradoxes of existence, harmonizing lightand shadow. It is difficult for a modern reader to approach this text without wondering about thelife and times of the man who wrote it.

Lao-Tse (or Lao-Tzu, as it is sometime spelled) was a name, and little more; the details of his lifehave been lost to history. Only the work survived...until now. Mystics of all times and placeshave taught that every event that has occurred is forever recorded in the annals of time. Anassociate of Abd-ru-shin, author of the spiritual classic In the Light of Truth: The Grail Message, has made a spiritual connection to that ageless record and here reports what it reveals about thelife of the sage called Lao-Tse.

There is no indication of author in this, or any other book in Grail Foundation Press' ForerunnerSeries. Those who made the connection were able to see truly, and to write down what they saw,but they do not consider themselves authors of the volumes. For this reason, the books appearwith the simple notation, "Received in the proximity of Abd-ru-shin through the special gift ofone Called for the purpose."

The text follows chronologically through the life of Lao-Tse in a style that reveals the sage assimultaneously human and transcendent. Some of the most touching passages tell of Lao-Tse'schildhood and the reactions he inspired in his often-confused parents:"Li-Fu-Tai lived in the constant expectation of discovering his ancestor in his son. At the veryleast, this boy was bound to be completely different from all other sons of men. He watched thechild constantly, but at the same time he suffered many a disappointment. [The boy] developedexactly like other healthy children. In time he learned to walk and talk, he fell into the water andreached a fire. When he got into some childhood mischief, the father was annoyed by his son'snaughtiness. But his mother tempered the punishments and softened the rebukes...To her all thechild'sactions...seemed to spring from the same source; an immense thirst for knowledge...Heasked few question, preferring to find his answers through experiencing."

There's an immediacy in this prose, as the author who does not claim authorship transports usback through time, to witness the emergence of one of the greatest sages ever to live. This bookis inspiring and compelling--worth the reading for anyone who cares about humankind's spirituallegacy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great
don't get on history or in all of its essence. just get best out of it. it has a lot of good stuff

2-0 out of 5 stars Sweet piece of fiction
This is a very sweet story about a time, place, and man that was the construct of the author of this book. Historians and philosophers will continue to debate whether Lao Tzu ever existed or, if the Tao Te Ching was the work of many men. This book, however, portrays a decidedlyJudeo/Christian perspective to the man called Lao Tzu and his life andtimes. The book is inacurate in it's portayal of life andphilosophy/religion during the Han Dynasty. The author clearlymisrepresents the history and beliefs in ancient China in a desire to moldChinese thinking into a monotheistic belief system. If the reader iswilling to set aside the historical and philosophical truths of theChineses culture, the story is set forth as a very sweet parable. Assomeone who takes the Chinese culture seriously, I was not able to do so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing to life Times Past!
On first reading, this book is a refreshing story of one of mankinds' most respected spiritual guides. The text transports one easily to ancient China, and recreates the scenes vividly! On deeper relection, the bookstrue value becomes apparant and the deep spiritual truths become alive inthe present. Great lessons for today are contained here. A book of truestinsight! ...
