Extractions: International Employment for Teachers Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.

Extractions: Recently the Louisiana Board of Regents tested the College of Education and its ability to transform college students into those who will educate the leaders of tomorrow. The result of that test gave Tech's College of Education an A+. This year the board graded based on how well students performed on the teacher certification exam, called the PRAXIS. From the years 1999 to 2001 a total of 228 undergraduate and alternate certification students have taken the test, and 219 of those students have passed it. Thus, Tech received an A+. "This means the teacher preparation programs [Tech] has to prepare students for the classroom are exemplary," Trey Williams, communications director for the Louisiana Teacher Quality Initiative, said. "They meet the criteria the state expects them to have." Now the college is eligible for teacher fellowships, which is money that will allow for additional professors. It will also receive $7,500 in grants and is eligible for other smaller grants. Only four universities in Louisiana received an A+. These were two public universities, Tech and the University of Louisiana at Monroe, and two private universities, Loyola University of New Orleans and Dillard University, also in New Orleans. Nine colleges in Louisiana received a grade of A.
