Extractions: LSU INSTITUTE FOR PARTNERSHIPS IN EDUCATION (LSUIPE) Background: In January 2000 a Provost Task Force on K-12 Linkages was formed with the following charge from the Provost: Chancellor Emmert and I are looking for action steps and strategies that will effectively demonstrate LSU s commitment to children, families, and schools and to the lifelong development of the human resources of Louisiana. Operating downstream of K-12 education, LSU cannot advance among the nation s public research universities unless K-12 education also advances, nor will LSU be able to recruit and retain greater numbers of highly talented faculty and staff if they do not find local and regional communities supportive of the high aspirations we would expect them to have the education of their families. The Task Force was comprised of LSU faculty members, staff representatives, administrators, and members from the community involved in education. It included teachers, principals/heads, a superintendent, a school board member, and a member of the Louisiana Board of Regents and Governor s Task Force on Education.

Extractions: As only one of many pro-active educational initiatives, were working with the National Council for Economic Education (NCEE) to implement their Financial Fitness for Life curriculum in K-12 schools. These course materials recognize that good money management skills are based on value systems that are learned over time. These concepts are therefore introduced in kindergarten, and built on and reinforced year after year through 12th grade. Through a series of workshops, classroom teachers are trained in the presentation of these curriculum materials and how to integrate them into their existing courses. To accomplish this, weve teamed up with the Credit Bureau of Baton Rouge, the Louisiana Council for Economic Education (LCEE, a state chapter of the NCEE), the Louisiana Department of Education and many other organizations and business leaders. The Credit Bureau made a launch of the project possible in 2000 with a grant of $50,000 to begin training classroom teachers and providing them with copies of the materials. The Credit Bureau and CCCS were so pleased with the results that in 2001 both organizations contributed $50,000 each to create a challenge grant of $100,000. This challenge grant will match every dollar raised up to $100,000 to generate a total of $200,000 to underwrite continued teacher training institutes across the state through 2003. Our hats off to the Louisiana Bankers Association, and their education arm, the Louisiana Young Bankers, who jumped in to ensure success of the program by both a generous donation and by assisting us in fund-raising across the state.

Louisiana Challenge -- Vol. 2, No. 1, 1998 -- Pg. 4 Addressing the Crisis of Leadership for Educational Technology in louisiana schools. intechnology leadership for Colleges of Education and k12 schools. http://www.challenge.state.la.us/news/sp98/pg4.html
Extractions: Taking the Challenge on the Road ... Navigation Bar With the influx of technology resources in districts throughtout the state and nation from local, federal, and state funding commitments, a need for educational technology leadership has evolved in crisis proportions. It is essential that high quality training occur for individuals engaging in technology leadership for Colleges of Education and K-12 schools. These individuals must be knowledgeable and skilled in planning for technology use as a tool for learning, assessment, communications, and administration. If State Departments of Education, Colleges of Education, and district staff development personnel do not provide the leadership necessary for schools and districts to apply technology successfully for improving student learning, private entities will and the price tag will be enormous. With these needs in mind, the Louisiana Challenge Grant has embarked on a mission to provide comprehensive and systemic leadership training in educational technology by initiating partnerships for professional development with Louisiana universities. A pilot professional leadership development program is currently underway with six Louisiana Districts through the Challenge Grant and Louisiana Tech University.

Extractions: Decision Support System Although the two data collection systems housed detailed, policy relevant information, the LDE needed to develop an adequate mechanism for conveying this information to decision makers in a timely and convenient manner. The LDE established a team to deploy a decision support system (DSS) designed to provide decision makers access to information on education inputs and outcomes at the school, LEA, and SEA levels. The decision support system was deployed in two stages. First an internal system was developed, accessible by data and budget analysts at the LDE. This functioned as a pilot system for checking the DSS organization, formats, and help features. Next an external web server was linked to the LDE home page and made accessible to a wide range of clients both inside and outside the LDE. Data reports were placed on the external web after they had been pilot tested internally. Several paper reports were moved to the web, including individualized school and district report cards. The LDE improved data access and analysis by:
