Extractions: New York, N.Y. 1937-1941 I enjoyed Lowell and my seventh grade, and since I had been there just one year, I really expected to return when the call of obedience to the Provincial seemed to say Come up higher, Friend. I was assigned to our greatest school in the Province, St. Anns Academy in New York City, which was a boarding school that took up one full block. Classes were offered from kindergarten through high school. It was a time when people were working hard to make a living and had to place their children in boarding schools. My assignment was to teach two classes in high-school English and one class of Latin. I was to be free for the afternoon so I would have time to take care of the library full-time. I had three years of experience in teaching under my belt and felt ready for the demands of the high school. St. Ann's Academy occupied a good portion of the block between 76th and 77th streets on Lexington Avenue. The statue of St. Ann appeared on the corner pedestal of 77th and Lexington Avenue. Across the avenue was a general hospital that was also helpful. The Marist Brothers came to Lewiston, Maine, in 1886, and then went to take schools in various cities of New England. St. Ann's was the initial school that we took in New York shortly after starting in Lewiston. There was always a strong sense of community with the boarding students from the early days that made for a very friendly spirit. With the discipline of our unique physical education teacher with his German background, the parents came to our annual physical education demonstration and were pleased with the discipline of the academy. We let the parents and students know that this was not just a school, but also an academy where the boarding students were part of a larger family.

Extractions: Rich in History The Academy of the Sacred Heart has a history that is rich in both tradition and values. The Academy's history dates back to France in the year 1800 when a woman by the name of Madeline Sophie Barat founded the religious order named the Society of the Sacred Heart. St. Madeline Sophie was fortunate enough to have received an education from her brother during a time when women simply were not educated. It is upon her vision for education of young women that the Society and all Sacred Heart schools have their foundation. ASH Coteau's Place in the Network of Sacred Heart Schools The Academy is part of the national and international Network of Sacred Heart Schools. There are twenty schools in the United States and over two hundred schools internationally. All of the network schools are rooted in the philosophy and vision of St. Madeline Sophie and are guided by the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Education. These Goals are our foundation, and we strive to apply them and to live them in our everyday lives throughout the school community. The Goals are as follows:

Staying Safe At Loyola University in New Orleans, louisiana, new ESL students tour the city. LouisUniversity in Missouri, as at many schools, they also ride bicycles. http://www.studyusa.com/articles/safety.htm
Extractions: Home Resource Guide Understanding U.S. Education Staying Safe by William K. Cassell, Ph.D. "WILL MY child be safe?" is a question parents around the world ask when their daughter or son leaves home to study in another country. Of course, safety is relative. If you compare crime statistics, it is easy to say Tokyo is safer than Los Angeles. But a Japanese student who takes reasonable precautions may be quite safe while studying in L.A. It is easy to understand why parents in Japan or Sweden, for example, would be concerned by incidents of violent crime against students shown on television or reported in their local newspaper. However, it is important to remember that these incidents receive so much media attention because they happen so seldom. As tragic as these incidents are for the people involved, the odds of a student becoming the victim of a violent crime in the U.S.A. are extremely low. In countries where daughters are sheltered at home, parents often expect that colleges or universities will exercise the same level of control over female students. It is hard to tell them that dormitories in U.S. colleges are normally co-educational, and students no longer have curfews.
