As part of the Ontario government's Clean Water Strategy, the Act provides for province-wide standards to address the effects of agricultural practices on the environment, especially as they relate to land-applied materials containing nutrients. The Act addresses the issues and risks identified in the Environmental Commissioner's special report of July 2000, "The Protection of Ontario's Groundwater and Intensive Farming." It aligns with Commissioner Dennis O'Connor's Report of the Walkerton Inquiry Part Two and builds on the government's Smart Growth Strategy, which calls for well-planned and environmentally sensitive development. The legislation represents a comprehensive, clear, province-wide approach that protects water, the environment and the well-being of communities in rural Ontario, while ensuring farmers can invest in and operate their farms with confidence. The need for this approach was confirmed by farmers, municipalities, environmental groups and others during consultations held by the Task Force on Intensive Agricultural Operations in Rural Ontario during early 2000 The government has pledged to move quickly to develop and implement regulations under the Nutrient Management Act

Many of them in danger of being involved in motor vehicle accidents. In a pattern repeated around the State, dogs left outside and unattended became terrified by the loud bangs of the fireworks. In panic, they escape any way they can and are often found miles away from home. Dogs which can be identified through microchips and registration under the companion animals register are returned home, while others are taken to Blacktown Pound where it is hoped their owners will track them down. "We have had calls from horse owners whose animals were terrified by the fireworks, as well as many dog and cat owners who had lost their pets," Councillor Davies said. "The loud bangs of fireworks are a very disturbing thing for an animal. They have no idea what it is and tend to panic. "If you are lucky, someone will call council to let us know there’s a frightened dog in their yard or street. One of our animal services officers will then come out to collect it and try to re-unite the dog with its owner.

That's the message from a major Livestock Care Conference held June 25 in Edmonton. The conference was sponsored by the producer group Alberta Farm Animal Care Association (AFAC) and the University of Alberta. The more than 150 people attending included a broad cross section of the livestock, academic, research and retail communities. Speakers from across Canada and the U.S. outlined how major food companies are demanding assurance that livestock they purchase are cared for properly in the production and marketing chain. That demand for quality control from food industry leaders is driving aggressive education programs by Canadian livestock producers, and is resulting in a new wave of leading edge research. "Increasingly, the livestock industry is being asked to prove that all animals are treated humanely at all stages of the production and marketing chain," says Susan Church, AFAC manager and co-organizer of the conference. "Clearly, consumers want reassurance that livestock are handled humanely. Animal welfare is associated with food quality, safety and health, and must be an integral component of any quality assurance program." Corporate fast-food retailers are hearing this message and have stepped-up their role in setting the animal welfare agenda. Burger King, for example, has been working with animal welfare experts and the industry to develop standards for animal welfare practices that it expects to be met by its beef, pork, poultry and dairy suppliers. "The message here is be involved with us; don't pretend the issue is going to go away," says Chet England, Senior Director, Product Safety and Regulatory, for Burger King Corporation. "This is an opportunity for the various links in the food chain to work together, to improve the well being of the animals throughout the system."

(September 2, 2002) Total attendance figures of the 2002 Colorado State Fair are in, and Fair officials are thrilled with the final tally. The 16-day Colorado State Fair, which concluded Sept. 1, welcomed 667,457 visitors since it kicked off Aug. 17. The final total is 30,359 visitors ahead of last year's State Fair attendance of 637,098, an impressive increase considering the 2002 State Fair was one day shorter than the 2001 State Fair. The Colorado State Fair traditionally has extended into Labor Day, but Fair officials in 2002 decided to shorten the State Fair to 16 days by ending the Fair the Sunday before Labor Day. Though 2002 State Fair revenue totals have yet to be calculated and released, Fair officials are pleased that the decision to shorten the State Fair did not negatively affect attendance.

The Partnerships were announced by Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt speaking at a conference of manufacturers in Edinburgh today. Two of the six Faraday Partnerships, those based at the Roslin Institute and at TWI in Cambridge, are being funded by BBSRC in collaboration with other Government departments. The Partnerships will bring together leading scientists with their counterparts in businesses in order to allow industry to access high quality research and expertise. The Farm Animal Genetics and Genomics Faraday Partnership, based at the Roslin Institute near Edinburgh, will seek to integrate the latest research in these areas with the UK's animal breeding and animal health industries. The UK is a world leader in these industries and the Partnership should help secure this position at a time when scientific research in these fields is advancing at an incredible rate. The Partnership will establish research collaborations between businesses and scientists throughout the UK and provide training for up-and-coming scientists in this field. Support is provided by BBSRC, the Scottish Executive and DEFRA.

This event will concentrate on the control of internal parasites by selective breeding, rotational and mixed grazing and novel forages. External parasites will also be covered including options for scab control and flies. The day will also take a detailed look at the practices at Churchdown Farm, which is a 260 ha organic holding with 80 suckler cows and followers, 350 ewes and 50 store cattle. Cereals are also grown in the rotation. The event will be valuable for all farmers who have livestock at risk from internal and external parasites.
