Extractions: Introduction Listening comprehension is the receptive skill in the oral mode. When we speak of listening what we really mean is listening and understanding what we hear. In our first language, we have all the skills and background knowledge we need to understand what we hear, so we probably aren't even aware of how complex a process it is. Here we will briefly describe some of what is involved in learning to understand what we hear in a second language. Listening Situations There are two kinds of listening situations in which we find ourselves: Interactive listening situations include face-to-face conversations and telephone calls, in which we are alternately listening and speaking, and in which we have a chance to ask for clarification, repetition, or slower speech from our conversation partner. Some non-interactive listening situations are listening to the radio, TV, films, lectures, or sermons. While there are many things you can do to improve your English comprehension skills, I feel that taking control of a conversation when you are lost is vital to better communication. This is what I mean. Suppose that your partner said, "The farewell party for Tom is on Friday at 6:30 at the lodge down by the lake," and you didn't understand where the party was going to be held. You understood everything else though. You could say, "I don't understand" or "Say that again," but what you really want to know is only one small part of the sentence (that is, where's the party going to be at the lodge). Now, "I don't understand" is a not very productive expression, except in cases of zero comprehension, because it doesn't tell the other person what you didn't catch. Rather, by pinpointing the part you didn't understand, you save time and also frustration and stress which helps your partner figure out where you're lost. Instead, say something like "Where's the party going to be held?" or "A 'lodge'? What's that?" Now, many of my students are afraid to restate or seek help from others because they fear they won't understand the response anyway. Now, that's always a possibility, but personally, I'd rather take a few risks and understand in the end, than to remain in the dark all of the time.

Shepherds that spent much time in the open looking after sheep or goats could sit and watch the stars at night. Sailors perhaps had more time than anyone else to watch and wonder as they spend months sailing to distant places. Some clever imaginations invented stories about the Sun, Moon and stars. They imagined them as gods or goddesses. These stories were handed down from parents to children and became legends. To the people who heard them, they seemed qu ite true. This is one story told in India. The Sun, Moon and stars are a large family. The Sun is the head ruler in the sky. The Moon is his wife and the stars are his children. To keep alive, the Sun catches stars and eats them. But when he gets up in the morning, the stars run from him, and dare not appear again until he goes into his hole in the west. He crawls along the hole until he finds his narrow bed in the middle of the Earth. It is so small that he has no room to turn and has to creep out on the east side to climb to the sky. His wife, the Moon, then has her sleep. Every month the Moon is sad when the Sun eats some of the stars. She puts a black veil over her face to show her sorrow. This slowly wears off, and by the end of the months her face is bright again.
