A fog detector activates a horn that sounds about 837 hours per year, one of the mostfrequent in Puget Sound. It's surrounded by a picnic area and small beach now maintained by theMetropolitan Park District of Tacoma, on Wan-I-Da Avenue, reached via Hyada Avenue off EastSide Drive. At a particularly scenic spot on the easternmost tip of Maury Island (an eastern extensionof Vashon Island), the present 38-foot tower and signal building were built in 1915. Thislighthouse was originally a lens lantern suspended from a 25-foot post, erected in 1893. Thebuilding is sometimes open for tours on summer weekends. Reach it by heading east onSouthwest Point Robinson Road to a 'T' and then turn south (right) on Southwest Luana BeachRoad to a small parking lot.

Desktop SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER Climbing the spiral steps and looking out from the lantern room, you find yourselfwondering about these curious round houses, these beacons of the brine built along the edges ofearth. How many mariners fighting rough seas sighed with relief when they spotted the beam shiningfrom this lighthouse? How many corrected their course when the mournful wail of its hornreached their ears though thick fog? Did bootleggers decades ago keep the light at starboard on nighttime runs? "They're kind of like America's castles," says Bosun's Mate Chief Gene Hullette, chief of theAids to Navigation team at Coast Guard Station Port Angeles. "To a sailor, a lighthouse meansyou're home. They symbolize a sentinel. It's always there." In an age of satellite navigation systems and radar, lighthouses are less important thandecades ago, but in Washington there are still more than 20 in operation, though they're nowautomated. Others were decommissioned and either demolished, leased to the state for parks orinterpretive centers, or left crumbling to the elements.

Extractions: Lighthouses: Then and Now Over 200 years of lighting the way The care of lighthouses falls under the Short-Range Aids to Navigation Program, one of four programs administered by the Office of Navigation. Aids to navigation are external references that help mariners determine the position of their vessel and choose a safe course. Short-range aids include buoys, beacons, lights, lighthouses, sound signals and ranges. Today, expensive and environmentally-hazardous batteries are being replaced by solar power and automated lighthouses. The Office of Navigation The Radio-navigation Division, G-NRN, manages the Radio-navigation Program. This program includes Loran-C, OMEGA and a coastal radio-beacon system. The Loran-C system consists of 38 Coast Guard or host-nation staffed transmitting stations that provide coverage of the continental U.S., parts of the North Pacific Ocean, North Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. The coverage meets Department of Defense requirements. The Coast Guard also coordinates the operation of the OMEGA radio-navigation system. This system of eight stations located around the globe provides world-wide radio navigation coverage, but with less accuracy than Loran-C. Two OMEGA stations in North Dakota and Hawaii are Coast Guard staffed. Radio-beacons provide a positioning-fixing or homing capability in coastal and Great Lakes waters. There are more than 200 radio-beacon transmitters. The Waterways Management Program, WWM, is a relative newcomer. It was added to the Navigation Systems Safe Division, G-NSS, in 1986. The program oversees several waterways management services including traffic separation schemes, regulated anchorage areas, and the international and Inland Navigational Rules. It is also the program manager for Vessel Traffic Services.

Extractions: This page is a preliminary listing of lighthouses of the west coast of mainland Mexico. Lighthouses of Baja California are on a separate page. The lighthouses are listed from north to south, from Sonora to Chiapas. The list is rather short, because there are few tall towers along this coast. In most places the coastline is high, and navigational lights can be mounted high on the bluffs and headlands. Tall towers aren't needed. There are many shorter towers along this coast, and probably a fair number of them would qualify as lighthouses. Information concerning these towers is simply lacking. Tourism is a major industry on much of this coast, but only a few of the lighthouses are tourist attractions. As a result, photos and visitor information are hard to find on the Internet. If you have information on any of the lighthouses of Mexico, or photos you would be willing to share, please let me know (For convenience, I've added to this page two lighthouses of the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. So far, these are the only active lighthouses I've identified on the Pacific coast of Central America north of Panama.)
