Waves pounding at the rocks constantly reshape the coastline. In this narrow band between water and land, strange animals and plants thrive. Within the confines of the shore, tidal plants and animals have developed specializations which allow them to survive. The tidal zone is continually redesigned by three actions: wind, water and rock. Winds howl across the vast oceans which, over time, slowly erode the land as the waves crash against rocks stirred up by the wave action. Imagine pounding one fist into an open hand over and over again. This is life in the tidepool. When the tide retreats the sun beats down relentlessly. Exposed animals and plants need to conserve water to survive until the tide returns. Because the tides slowly invade and retreat, distinct sub-habitats exist within the tidepool, each with unique qualities. In the deeper parts of the tidepools, more water is present. Animals and plants that need constant moisture thrive in this zone. Animals and plants that need constant exposure to air live higher in the tidepool, where the waves simply splash. In between, unique critters straddle both worlds, surviving both in the air and underwater. The intertidal zone (the area between high tide and low tide) is rich with nutrients which are replenished by each incoming tide. As the waves crash down, they carry food necessary for survival of the tidepool inhabitants. Each wave carries a plankton soup which is the main diet of mussels and barnacles. Also, dead plants and animals wash into the tidepool feeding the numerous scavengers and opportunists, like hermit crabs, shore crabs, sea gulls and even anemones.

The book was written about life during the late Cretaceous (75 million years ago) and was illustrated with 26 new paleo-life artworks created by Douglas Henderson. Marine creatures, birds and Pteranodons were the subjects of many of his paintings. Doug Henderson has generously given me permission to use these pictures as illustrations on the Oceans of Kansas Paleontology webpage. They will soon be found on various pages on the Oceans of Kansas website, but I wanted to show all of them together in one place so that the reader can get a feel for the variety of creatures that Doug re-created in his pictures. I also wanted to be able to give some background about the animals shown in the pictures in the context of the fossils that we find represented in the Smoky Hill chalk and Pierre Shale. The first chapter is a brief autobiographical piece which sets the stage for how Fortey entered his profession. It also serves as a metaphor for main themes in the rest of the book. In general, the work is well done, but the book is not without its problemssome forgivable, some not. Although illustrated timelines are readily available elsewhere , including one would have been a valuable addition to the bookespecially for the non-scientist audience the book is primarily aimed at. The prose is, for the most part, excellent, but occasionally the word choice is misleading, overly dogmatic, or strange. For instance on page 25 he states "that the genetic bond that unites all mammals runs to more than the sequences of chemical bases in the DNA molecule." What the "more" is, he does not say. I'm not sure what could still be 'genetic' and not be based on DNA. Two pages later he states that if the formation of the solar system "had happened one jot differently, there would have been no living cells". Should this really be stated as fact? For all we know, life can exist (or could have existed) in a variety of environments ranging from comets and meteorites (as he speculates in the next chapter) to Venus-like planets or celestial bodies that could house hyperthermophiles

Shaped by natural forces, they, in turn, shape the impacts of those forces on our coastlines and our lives. Next to rainforests, estuaries are the highest producing ecosystems on the planet. They are full of biological activity and often provide critical habitat for the health of many terrestrial, estuarine, and marine species of birds, fish, and mammals. For anadromous species like salmon, estuaries serve as essential gateways for the ocean-swimming adults to reach their freshwater spawning grounds. For cadaromous species like American eels, estuaries are the exits where adult freshwater eels enter the oceans to complete their spawning phase offshore. Many species have adapted to the unique physical characteristics of estuary life and are completely dependent on the mixture of salt- and freshwater, the ebb and flow of tidal cycles, and the periodic flooding of rivers for their health and survival. Like the "dark jungles" and "infested swamps" of decades ago that are now familiar to us as "rainforests" and "wetlands," estuaries are hampered by similar image problems in our popular culture. They are often viewed as little more than worthless mud flats and mosquito breeding grounds. Several surveys have documented a significant knowledge gap for most people regarding what estuaries are and why they are valuable. And as with rainforests and wetlands, the consequence of our collective ignorance has been the loss-with little outcry-of more than half of this country's estuarine wetlands since colonial settlement. Coastal communities that have depended since prehistoric times on the fish and shellfish they harvested from estuaries are bearing the brunt of this loss.

This denizen of deep waters was out of sight and beyond reach for millennia. But with newly improved equipment, fishers could suddenly tap a newfound bonanza. The story of what happened next is emblematic of the far broader challenges facing humanity-and the oceans it depends on-in the 21st century. By the late 1980s, researchers had learned that it takes an orange roughy about 30 years to mature and reproduce, roughly 10 times as long as a cod. Using biomass sampling, scientists calculated that the maximum sustainable yield was 7,500 tons. Anything more would drive stocks down. But for eight years in a row, fishers had caught more than five times this level. The New Zealand Fisheries Ministry called for dramatic cutbacks, but their warnings came too late. Just four years after peak harvest in the 1989-90 season, orange roughy catches had plummeted by 70 percent. Now scientists fear the fish will not recover at all. For much of history, humanity has treated oceans as inexhaustible both in terms of what they could produce and in terms of what they could absorb. Because of the tides that seemed to wash nearly everything away, it looked as though humanity could do no more than temporarily alter the waters closest to shore. That oceans could buckle under the weight of human activities was inconceivable.
