Extractions: Moscow was poised last week for a major political event: a meeting between two of Russia's best-known politicians who embrace Western-style market democracy. After not speaking to each other for six months, they were supposed to discuss uniting their political parties in a bid to widen their slender niche in a parliament dominated by President Vladimir Putin. It was a typical deadlock between the two political leaders who claim to be the voice of freedom in a country they call increasingly authoritarian. "I will explain to you the problem," said Nemtsov in an interview after the meeting was canceled, waving Yavlinsky's letter in the air. "Ego. That's it. Ego." The feud is emblematic of the troubles of Russia's liberals as they prepare for the December parliamentary elections. Although 25 to 30 percent of Russians questioned in polls say they support the liberal democratic ideals that the parties espouse, such as free speech, human rights, and a Western-style system of checks and balances, only about 10 percent say they support either of the two parties.

During the congress, delegates from SPS's nine small organisations, elected Boris Nemtsov, who heads the SPS faction in the State Duma, as leader of the new SPS party, outstripping his rival Alexei Kara-Murza. Nemtsov, former deputy prime minister under Boris Yeltsin, won 237 votes to gain the post of chairman of the Federal Political Council of the party, who will conduct most of the everyday bureaucratic and political work. The delegates also adopted the charter of the new party, as well as some key documents on the party's priorities, its foreign policies and attitude toward the government. The transformation into a party will help the SPS to survive if parliament passes a law regulating political parties, which is designed to limit the number of parties by permitting only national parties with substantial membership to participate in elections.

Of course, the significance of his move is magnified immeasurably by its impact on the teetering balance of power in Congress. The reality seems to be, though, based on his convictions and his record, Jeffords was a Republican in name alone, just as one might point to any number of Democrats who could comfortably fly on the far right wing of the GOP. The same phenomenon of infinite flexibility of political labels is not unheard of north of the border, no indeedy. While no one political reincarnation has toppled the political order to the extent Jeffordss has in the United States, party hopping in Canada has had a far-from-insignificant impact. One need look no further than the province where "je me souviens" apparently does not apply to the party with which some politicians were ushered into the business.

Extractions: Campaigning with Cash: equality must be ensured (The following opinion piece, by Aaron Freeman and Duff Conacher (Founding Directors of Democracy Watch), was published, in slightly different form, in the Halifax Chronicle-Herald and the Montreal Gazette in July 1997) "It's as if two boxers get into a ring under the same rules, in the same weight category, with the same gloves and, all of a sudden, a spectator jumps in and starts hitting one of them with hammer." That was how then-Chief Electoral Officer Jean-Marc Hamel described the effect of massive special interest advertising and advocacy efforts in the 1988 election. In that election, business groups spent an estimated $13 million advertising in support of the free trade deal, while the deal's opponents spent roughly $1 million. Other expenses incurred in support of the deal included company inserts of free trade promotional material in employees' pay slips and mailings to shareholders, and meetings with employees on company time to lecture them on the benefits of the deal. Given that only one political party favoured the free trade deal, and that the deal was the key issue of the 1988 election, these "third party" efforts were clearly partisan in nature. Similarly, in the federal election just passed, the National Citizens' Coalition, Campaign Life, and at least two unions ran attack ads against the Liberals worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The Liberals acknowledged that their ability to govern effectively depended on fulfilling their pledge to restore Canadians' faith in political institutions. In June 1994, the Liberals introduced their ethics package as the hallmark of their government integrity pledge. However, the federal government's ethics package was unenforceable and rife with conflicts of interest, and should have caused Canadians to question the government's honesty and integrity. A fundamental problem with the package is the Ethics Counsellor position, which was promised as an independent, effective watchdog who "has the teeth to investigate and take action." The Liberals broke their promise by putting the Ethics Counsellor, Howard Wilson, under the direction of the Prime Minister. The above two paragraphs were the first two paragraphs of an opinion piece written, and published in slightly different form, in November 1994. Another line of that piece posed the question: "Does anyone think this system will work if, for example, the Prime Minister finds himself in a conflict of interest?"

Jeffords is still what he always has beena hard-core fiscal and social liberal who voted with the Democrats as often as he did with the Republicans. Jeffords voting record speaks for itself. In 1981, Jeffords voted against President Ronald Reagans tax cuts; in 1991, he voted against confirmation of Clarence Thomas to the U.S. Supreme Court; in 1993, he supported Hillary Clintons effort to socialize health care; and this year he teamed with Democrats to reduce the size of President Bushs tax cut. Jeffords also opposed Reagan on just about every aspect of his strategy to stop the advance of Communism and to bring down the Soviet Union.

Liberal Party the loss of our automatic ballot access as a recognized political party. It willsimply allow us to continue our voter registration as capital L liberals. http://www.liberalparty.org/lpmain.html
Extractions: January 2003 Dear Friends, We have had a terrific history. Over the past fifty-eight years we have elected Presidents, Senators, and Congressmen who have represented and furthered the New York liberal tradition on the national stage. We have elected Governors, Attorneys-General, and Comptrollers who have made us proud to be called New Yorkers. We have elected Mayors, local representatives, and Judges who have contributed to our common good. We have never been afraid to face the future, and to work to make the world as it ought to be, not as it is. However, this may be the last time that you can be addressed as a capital "L" liberal. As you know, our gubernatorial ticket did not receive the fifty-thousand votes necessary in the last election to maintain our status, under New York State election law, as an organized party with state wide ballot access. Starting as of January 1 you may receive a voter registration form from your local Board of Elections asking you to select a new party registration. I say that you may receive this notice; it is not clear as to whether this provision can withstand a challenge being brought under Federal law by another of the parties losing ballot status. Even if their action is successful, however, it will not cure the loss of our automatic ballot access as a recognized political party. It will simply allow us to continue our voter registration as capital "L" Liberals. It will have no other effect. Because of our loss our State Headquarters at 322 Eighth Avenue has been closed effective December 31. It is a truism that money is the mother-milk of (organized) politics; we no longer have the ability to raise the considerable amounts necessary to maintain the headquarters. The State Policy Committee, after several meetings, decided to face the inevitable and terminate those operations. Several individuals have volunteered to continue our operations closeout process as to reporting. However, this website will continue for at least a year.
Extractions: Statistics show that a majority of America's younger generations are growing increasingly conservative. For those of us who regularly follow elections, this dawning revelation has long since dawned. Exit polls after the 2001 presidential election showed that President Bush, the supposed "dummy" loathed on campuses and ridiculed at high-school hang-outs, had actually captured the young vote by a good margin. From within their ivory tower dens of higher education and elite soirees, the liberals also managed to catch wind of this fact. Countless, frenzied websites of the flag burning left denounced the "misguided ness" of today's youth, after decades of romanticizing, lauding, and brainwashing campus students as the Scarlet Pimpernels of America's oppressed. "The 'whiz kids' behind today's right-wing political parties leave one wondering why youth was wasted on the young," sniffed one progressive website that I had happened to surf into. So, holding right wing views is apparently enough to chemically transform the Scarlet Pimpernel into Robespierre himself. One way to explain this illogical nonsense is through the theory of the "portrait worldview". Whereas a proper right-wing worldview could be best illustrated by a chalkboard covered with mathematical writings, a typical liberal one can often resemble a portrait. The portrait varies from liberal to liberal, but one overriding theme is constant: The Right is ugly, and the Left is beautiful. "Regressive" versus "Progressive", "war-mongering" versus "pacifist", "women-hating" versus "feminist", and "bigoted" versus "tolerant" are all rhetorical attempts by liberals to describe the contrasts that they see in their mental picture.

The St. Laurent government was replaced when the Progressive Conservatives (called Conservatives before 1942) took office under the prime ministership of John G. Diefenbaker. In the 1962 elections the Progressive Conservatives lost their control of Parliament, but no other party was able to win a majority. Diefenbaker, as leader of the largest minority party, formed a weak coalition government. In February 1963 his government fell on the issue of Canada's failure to execute its 1958 commitments to accept nuclear weapons from the United States for the joint defense of North America. In general elections on April 8 the Liberals won more seats than any other party, and Liberal leader Lester B. Pearson was named prime minister of Canada in 1963 at the head of another minority government . In 1968 the Liberals chose Pierre Elliott Trudeau to succeed him. In the general elections in June, Trudeau won, with the Liberals taking a majority. This was the first election to use the electoral constituency boundaries of 1965. In the October 1972 elections Trudeau's Liberals won but failed to gain a majority. They were able to stay in power with New Democratic support, but in May 1974 Trudeau's government fell. The Liberals won a new majority in the July parliamentary elections.

Under The Municipal Act, councils may only make grants to other organizations if the grants benefit the municipality or the people who live in it. Therefore, if the City of Brandon or its residents did not benefit from their elected officials attendance at federal or provincial political party fund-raisers, it was not only a waste of public money. It is also contrary to The Municipal Act and unlawful.

Though many Ontarians may already have forgotten about Bill Davis, the past leader of Ontario's Progressive Conservative Party which held the reins of power for 42 consecutive years, it will not be as easy to forget or ignore the consequences and effects of his party's political philosophy. That's because the philosophy of the Progressive Conservatives has been adopted in its entirety by David Peterson and the Liberal Party of Ontario, whose electoral victory in September l987 virtually knocked the Conservatives off the political map. Has anything changed? Not really. Here's why: Being a conservative Liberal like David Peterson is the same as being a liberal Conservative like Bill Davis. Both are really socialists in disguise.
