Extractions: The Repressive Side of Right Wing Populism What can possibly explain the Reform Party and the discussions about recruiting Pat Buchanan, that include possible support from H. Ross Perot, and Lenora Fulani? We think the rhetoric of right wing populism is attractive to some forces on the left who side with business nationalists and isolationists because of joint opposition to global "free trade" treaties that undeniably benefit international corporate elites at the expense of working people. Liberals and progressives are being asked to ignore the historic prejudice behind right wing populism. Consider the statement of John Talbott, the Reform Party spokesperson in New Hampshire: "If you close your eyes, it is difficult to hear much of a difference between Ralph Nader on the left and Pat Buchanan on the right when they talk about corruption in government, the excesses of corporate welfare, the devastating effect of free international trade on the American worker and a desire to clean big money and special-interests out of Washington. There's a reason for this; 91 percent of the American people consider themselves middle class or working class. The time is now for a new political party that is neither right nor left, neither conservative nor liberal, but created and built to represent the hard-working average American in reforming our government." "If we all pull together, put our prejudices behind us, and ignore traditional labeling such as liberal or conservative, we can join together to fight the battle of our lives against the collaboration of big business and big government, break the two-party monopoly, and return control of our government to the true owners of this country - the American people."
Extractions: Brodie Ramin, Staff Writer When a democratic election results in an undemocratic outcome, it's time to reflect. Which is why in the wake of the B.C. Liberals' near-sweep of the provincial legislature, politically alert people across the province have been reflecting on the nature of the electoral system that led to the existing lopsided legislature. Last weekend, at their annual convention, the B.C. NDP became the latest political party officially endorsing a recommendation to reform the province's electoral system. The convention was broken up into thematic discussions, one of which was entitled "Reforming our Democratic Institutions" and involved approving an internal report that advocates switching the B.C. electoral system from the current simple member plurality system (SMP) to a form of proportional representation (PR). Nevertheless, when asked about the prospects for electoral reform rising to a place on the provincial political agenda, Ed Lavalle, the NDP Party secretary is skeptical. "It depends. The NDP is not in the driver's seat on the reform of democratic institutions, so the ability to bring this about is in the hands of two groups - the Liberal government if they choose to do it, or the general public if they pressure the government into it."

Despite a solid majority in the Folketing for continuous membership and further integration, the public has been split into two almost equal halves in all three referenda held on this subject. The referendum on the single European market in 1986 produced a majority of just over 56%, but the Maastricht Treaty was rejected on 2 June 1992 by 50.7% no votes. The parties for and against thereafter agreed on a "national compromise", which allowed Denmark certain opt-out clauses in the Edinburgh Agreement. As a result, the Treaty was accepted by a new referendum on 18 May 1993 by 56.8% of the votes. The 1970s were a turbulent decade in domestic politics. The landslide election of 1973 completely changed the party-political structure. The support for the four old parties fell from around 90% to approximately 58%, and many new parties entered parliament, the most important being the Progress Party and the Centre Democrats, who with around 16% and 8% of the votes respectively attracted a quarter of the voters. The Progress Party, led by Mogens Glistrup, represented a revolt against the welfare state, particularly the increases in taxation and the growth of the public sector. Politics were now characterised by frequent elections, complex coalitions and narrow parliamentary bases for the governments. The Liberals, led by Poul Hartling, governed between 1973 and 1975 with only 22 seats in the

Extractions: November 16, 2000 SIGA Donations to NDP and Liberals Should Be Returned to the Legislature The Saskatchewan Party is calling on the NDP and the Liberals to return all political donations they have received from the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA). Last June, the Saskatchewan Party revealed that SIGA had made donations to both the Liberals and the NDP. The Provincial Auditor has now confirmed these donations. The Auditor also stated that political donations are a violation of Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) policy. The Provincial Auditor said political donations by SIGA totaled $3,300 in the 1999-2000 fiscal year. However, the actual figure may be higher, as the Auditor only looked at the one year. He also indicated that "the state of SIGAs records make it difficult to do further investigation." Saskatchewan Party MLA Carl Kwiatkowski called on the NDP and the Liberals to release an audited statement of all donations received by those parties, their constituency associations and their candidates since SIGAs inception in 1995 and then return those donations to the provincial treasury. "The Provincial Auditor clearly states that this is public money and it is not supposed to be used for donations to political parties," Kwiatkowski said. "The government is now taking steps to recover all the money that was misspent. That should include all political donations to the NDP and the Liberals."

The Saskatchewan Party today released portions of the provincial Liberals 1999 Annual Return along with 1998 and 1999 records from Elections Canada showing the provincial Liberals received political contributions from SIGA totaling $1,779 and the federal Liberals received contributions totaling $5,327. Saskatchewan Party MLA Doreen Eagles said the Provincial Auditors recent report on SIGA makes it clear this money should be returned immediately. "The Auditor clearly states SIGA is not supposed to be using public money to donate to political parties," Eagles said. "The NDP has already returned nearly $10,000 of improper donations from SIGA. Its time for the Liberals to follow suit."

Political liberalism or progressivism , is a political tradition marked by a philosophy that personal liberty is supreme to other political concerns. Liberals frame their political views as being in defense of individual liberties. Although there is little consensus on a clearly specified definition for liberty, political liberals tend to, by definition, vote and otherwise act on behalf of public interests, and against private incorporated interests. Liberal politicians typically defend a democratic constitution that guarantees civil rights, as opposed to monarchies, aristocracies, or otherwise non-democratic systems. More precise liberal agendas often vary considerably from country to country, as

Extractions: At the Future of Social Democracy in Canada conference convened by former NDP leader Ed Broadbent and Canadian historian Desmond Morton, an eclectic group of 200 met to strategize and dream. Participants included academics, trade unionists, young anti-globalization activists, a lot of New Democrats, a few Liberals, and a healthy share of non-aligned social democrats looking for a home. After two days of discussion, there appeared to be a growing sentiment from panelists and conference participants that it's a good time for a kind of "big tent" political party of the left to grow out of what is now the NDP. At the same time, most participants appeared to agree on the necessity of having a functional left party. "The corporate right will say Hallelujah the day the left abandons party politics," said B.C. law professor Joel Bakan. Like most, he said grassroots and political activism should support one another. "Political parties can unite social movements. The right has shown how this can be done and the left can do it too."
