Cornell Feline Health Center--Feline Leukemia Virus Feline leukemia Virus (FeLV), FeLV, a retrovirus, is the most important infectiousdisease agent producing fatal illness in domestic cats today. http://web.vet.cornell.edu/public/fhc/felv.html
Extractions: Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) FeLV, a retrovirus, is the most important infectious disease agent producing fatal illness in domestic cats today. How is FeLV spread from cat to cat? The feline leukemia virus is excreted in saliva and tears and possibly the urine and feces of infected cats. Prolonged, extensive cat-to-cat contact is required for efficient spread, because the virus is rapidly inactivated by warmth and drying. How long can a cat survive with FeLV disease? A cat with FeLV disease may live for several weeks to several months, depending on how advanced the disease is at the time of diagnosis. However, it is impossible to tell how long any particular cat will survive. Can a cat become immune to FeLV? A significant percentage of adult cats that are exposed to the virus develop immunity and do not become persistently viremic (i.e., will not carry the virus indefinitely in the blood and bone marrow). Usually those cats live out a normal life span. However, in some the virus may remain sequestered for a variable period of time somewhere in the body. It is thus conceivable that FeLV might break out and cause disease at a later date, after the cats have been stressed, or perhaps medicated with drugs that suppress the immune system. Can my children or I become infected with FeLV if our cat is infected? What about our dog?

Leukemia - Oncologychannel Summary information about the condition. Provides links and access to clinical trials information. http://www.oncologychannel.com/leukemias/
Extractions: Overview Leukemia is a form of cancer that begins in the blood-forming cells of the bone marrow - soft, inner part of the bones. Leukemia - which literally means "white blood" in Greek - occurs when there is an excess of abnormal white blood cells in the blood. Known as leukocytes, these cells are so plentiful in some individuals that the blood actually has a whitish tinge. Under normal circumstances, the blood-forming, or hematopoietic, cells of the bone marrow make leukocytes to defend the body against infectious organisms such as viruses and bacteria. But if some leukocytes are damaged and remain in an immature form, they become poor infection fighters that multiply excessively and do not die off as they should.

Leukemias are evenly split between the acute and chronic forms, but among children one form acute lymphocytic leukemia accounts for about two-thirds of cases. Acute myelogenous leukemia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia are the most common forms in adults. Experts at Memorial Sloan-Kettering see about 500 new patients with leukemia each year, and receive about 20,000 inpatient and outpatient leukemia patient visits annually. Extractions: It was around 11:00 P.M. Friday night, and we were settling into what had recently become our usual night ritual. Robert, my 5-year-old son, was sound asleep on the sofa. My wife, Joan, was sitting by his bedside reading Mark a story. And Mark, my 4-year-old, was fighting sleep in his hospital bed by challenging his mother on any word that she might skip in the storybook which he had totally memorized. Despite the fact that Mark's current medication regiment included Morphine, Codeine, Benadryl, Alcohol, and many, many more pain medications, all being administered intravenously and simultaneously, he still was in a considerable amount of pain and discomfort, yet somehow alert at the same time. Looking at Mark's condition now and seeing how much he had deteriorated, it was hard to believe how casually my wife and I had acknowledged his need to be hospitalized just two short months prior. I remember that sunny warm Texas July Saturday well. We were planning a small dinner party with some close friends. While my wife was prepping the food, I nonchalantly mentioned that the small blister on Mark's foot was still not healing. "If anything," I said, 'it seems to be getting worse." We kind of mutually agreed that I should take him to the hospital and see if the doctors could prescribe anything. If either of us had anticipated that he was going to be hospitalized, we would have both went. We never left Mark alone in the hospital.
