The online population for this demographic segment, according to Jupiter Research (a unit of this site's corporate parent), was estimated at 4.4 million in 2001, 6.1 million in 2002, 7.6 million in 2003, and expected to surge to 16.3 million by 2007, representing a substantial, and profitable, market. The largest year-over-year growth will come in 2004, when the population jumps 2.5 million over 2003's estimate to 10.1 million, and 2005, which will account for another 2.5 million. E-mail is as popular with older online users as it is for the overall Internet population. Jupiter's research reveals that 95 percent of those 55+ cite e-mail as a favorite activity, and 57 percent frequently send or receive e-greetings and online postcards. Dec. 13, 2000- The largest health survey ever conducted in California is being launched in an effort to determine the health status of the states diverse and emerging populations. The California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), which will seek information from 55,000 households statewide, was developed as a collaborative undertaking of the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, California Department of Health Services, and the Public Health Institute. Community leaders and elected officials rallied today to encourage residents to answer the survey when they are called on the telephone starting this week. The survey will be conducted in six different languages. CHIS will capture information that will help improve local health programs throughout the state. The findings will be used to monitor the publics health and access to health care, target intervention activities, plan resource allocation, and develop public policy for adult, adolescent and child health. Just as it is vitally important for Californians to participate in the Census, so is it equally important for them to participate in this survey, said Dr. Diana M. Bontá, Director of the California Department of Health Services. The outcome will affect the health of every Californian. Im grateful to the Governor and the legislature for their support of this program.

Social workers help people function the best way they can in their environment, deal with their relationships, and solve personal and family problems. Social workers often see clients who face a life-threatening disease or a social problem. These problems may include inadequate housing, unemployment, lack of job skills, financial distress, serious illness or disability, substance abuse, unwanted pregnancy, or anti-social behavior. Social workers also assist families that have serious domestic conflicts, including those involving child or spousal abuse. Through direct counseling, social workers help clients identify their concerns, consider effective solutions, and find reliable resources. Social workers typically consult and counsel clients and arrange for services that can help them. Often, they refer clients to specialists in services such as debt counseling, childcare or eldercare, public assistance, or alcohol or drug rehabilitation. Social workers then follow through with the client to assure that services are helpful and that clients make proper use of the services offered. Social workers may review eligibility requirements, help fill out forms and applications, visit clients on a regular basis, and provide support during crises.
