This wildly uneven work attempts to guide the small- to medium size publisher through the legal landscape from authorship to manufacture to distribution. He forgot to add: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce. . . . Men make their own history but they do not make it just as they please; they do not make it under circumstances chosen by themselves, but under circumstances directly encountered, given and transmitted from the past. What does it mean to make a farce of history? A farce occurs when a commonly accepted story or situation is twisted in such a way as to make it appear ridiculous. To suggest that history can be mocked, then, requires that there be some way of distinguishing between valid and invalid interpretations of history. In attempting to make this distinction, however, one runs into the problem that all interpretations necessarily contain a large subjective element to them, thus calling any supposed validity they may have into question. In law, this problem is compounded by the fact that when addressing legal precedence, one interprets cases, which are themselves interpretations of events. In other words, the judge is forced to provide an interpretation of an interpretation. An employee of the Espresso Royal Cafe asked two women - presumably lesbians - to refrain from passionately kissing as they sat at a window table. Madison's gay community was not amused. The very next day, about 125 homosexual demonstrators showed up on the premises, and conducted a "kiss-in" for several minutes. A spokeswoman for the protesters, Malvene Collins, demanded, "You say gays and lesbians cannot show affection here? Why not here but in every other restaurant in Madison?" The establishment's chastised owner, Donald Hanigan, assured the crowd, "I regret that this incident ever happened. I want all of you to come in here every day." In October, several dozen homosexual males, many of them dressed in women's clothing, openly hugged and kissed in a terminal of Seattle-Tacoma Airport, and handed out condoms and leaflets to travelers. Matt Nagel, spokesman for the Seattle chapter of a new homosexual organization, Queer Nation, seemed to sum up the feeling among militants in the local homosexual community. "We're going to homophobic bars, we're going to pack them, we're going to be openly affectionate, we're going to dance together and make it uncomfortable for all the straight people there."

This range covers periodical publications, often in collected editions, but including, for example, individual early newsbooks and runs of periodical issues. Some purchases contain music (playtexts, opera librettos) and maps (topographical and travel books) but the chief responsibility for antiquarian music rests with the Music Department (see section 14.3.5 ) and for maps and atlases with the Map Room (see section 15.4 ). While all European languages, ancient and modern, are within the remit of the Rare Books Department, the main modern languages predominate. 25.2 The general principle for book selection is that of building on the existing strengths of the Library's collections, thus increasing their already rich research potential. Purchases are concentrated on works of substantial interest not trivia. The range of these collections is very wide but the following categories are of special importance: 1) incunables and post-incunables, i.e. books printed up to 1520. (These tend to be expensive, and hence occasional, purchases.)
