One of the major distinctions made in learning styles research is the visual/auditory/kinesthetic distinction. Researchers generally agree that modalities of learning are distinguishable, though whether they represent learning styles or learning differences remains to be seen. Some have included such factors as environmental influences such as intake (ie. food), light, or heat as components of style. Two major issues remain constant. The first is whether to teach to students' strengths or attempt to expand their styles. The second issue revolves around whether or not teachers can observe the differences among students' styles, or whether valid and reliable tests and inventories should be used. A simple test that can be administered in the classroom is to present students with a series of problems which can be solved, with varying success, through a number of styles. The problems in the section "Assessing Your Learning Styles" are designed so that they can be solved through a number of styles. Start at "How Do You Think" , and work your way through the problems, being aware of your thinking as you go about problem solving. You will find that individuals tend to prefer one mode over the others, though those with an adaptive learning style are likely to apply a number of strategies if at first their preferred mode is unsuccessful. Extractions: Related links For the last twenty years or so, as diversity in our country has been growing, hundreds of different kinds of assessments have been developed to determine individual differences. There have been tests that determine perceptual differences, world view (i.e. field dependent and independent), learning styles, personality differences (i.e. Myers-Briggs), different kinds of talents, and different kinds of intelligence. The results of these tests are of little value unless they can be applied to helping students to learn and teachers to teach more effectively. They can be destructive when they are used primarily to "pigeon-hole" students in their own eyes and the eyes of others. We offer here a few of the most useful kinds of assessment. These tests are especially helpful when taken first by the teacher in order to determine his or her own profile. Thereby the teacher can guard against teaching in only that way and as a consequence making it very difficult for students who do not share a similar profile. It appears that the best use of this information is to help teachers broaden their array of teaching strategies so that students are learning at least part of the time in ways they find comfortable, and at other times in ways that stretch them into new ways of thinking and learning.

Many of these children in traditional schools are often diagnosed with a variety of disabilities, yet specific teaching styles and learning preferences are never questioned or addressed. Many of these problems can be solved easily by a simple assessment of each students primary and secondary learning styles. There are several theories surrounding the issue of learning styles and preferences in circulation today. Some theories focus on different learning personalities such as the social or introspective learner, while others emphasize the methods learners use to process or arrange information. In all my research and experience over the years with learning styles, I have simplified learning preferences into three primary categories. These include the auditory, visual, and tactile/kinesthetic modes of learning. It is my observation that all students receive, process, and give back information either auditorally, visually, or by tactile/kinesthetic methods. A person can learn by using more than one style; yet, each person has a primary learning preference.
