Student Projects Rationale: Spanish 307 is an intensive writing course in Spanish designed around a networked computer classroom. The sub-theme of this class is "Homenaje a la mujer hispana." This semester will engage in numerous writing and revision activities designed to improve your conceptualization and completion of written work in Spanish; several of the activities will be centered around the sub-theme of the class. You will write and revise a variety of types of compositions, building descriptive, narrative, summary, analytical and argumentative styles. This course should maximize your learning through writing, by asking you to write often, write thoughtfully and write in a variety of formats. Not all of your writing will be for a grade; your audience may be your professor, other students, yourself, or interested computer users on the World Wide Web. Writing Techniques and Strategies: The compositions will build in length and complexity as the semester progresses; but remember thatwriting in a foreign language is by its nature more problematical, and you must seek to renderphrases simply and elegantly. Do not translate from English! That is perilous and ponderous. Useforms that are familiar to you, and use them simply, thinking about tense andperson. Reach to improve your Spanish by working from what you know. Use the dictionary, but do so sparingly and carefully to be certain you have the correct part of speech and usage. Your written skills in Spanish will develop with practice, but they will not soon approach those of English; therefore, yourprecision and clarity must compensate to some extent. Keep things simple and follow good models reading and listening in Spanish will help you to internalize models.

Extractions: The Royal Latin School, Buckingham, UK Robert Tucker, Director of Music, explains how Sibelius has become an invaluable partner in music education. Sibelius has been an invaluable tool at our school for some time, both for pupils and for staff; it's simply the best as an assistant to musical learning, providing an exciting resource for developing a range of composing and performing skills. Sibelius also saves a great deal of time: scoring out parts, preparing differentiated class sheets, demonstrating musical techniques, and so on. Sibelius has become a fully integrated member of the music department! "I need a soprano saxophone to record my composition," one student remarked. Sibelius can perform the complete piece for the student, which was originally notated by hand and published using the software. In this case we solved the problem using the program to play the complex solo saxophone part with pupils playing the accompaniment live. We also adjusted the score to involve more pupils and later refined the saxophone part with additional directions for a really expressive result. This was a practical solution that not only saved the school money, but also provided us with a robot soloist who never tired during rehearsal!

Extractions: Latin Abbreviations (University of Michigan, US) All of these antiquated Latin abbreviations at one time had an important purpose. They functioned as a secondary, parenthetical language which sifted through, evaluated, qualified references for the reader. Eighteenth-century scholars used all of these designations as a way of talking to each other in code, telling each other what to expect from their sources. It was a natural mode of discourse for themthey all studied Latin, of course. Abbreviations of Latin Expressions (English Plus+, US) In standard writing, use the English equivalent or write out the whole word. Some common Latin expressions (University of Edinburgh, UK) Nowadays many publishers discourage the use of these Latin expressions and their abbreviations in footnotes and endnotes (presumably because so few people know what they mean!), but some publishers (Oxford University Press, for example) seem to insist on them. Anyway, these are the most commonly used in references, footnotes etc., should you come across them, or feel the urge to start using them yourselves. Abbreviations (Capital Community College, US)

Now that computerization has come to virtually every comer of American life, those still indifferent to it may indeed become its victims, the crunched numbers of contemporary society. The Law of the High-tech Jungle reads not "eat or be eaten" but "BYTE or be BITten," and it applies as much to composition teachers as to accountants. For those who have yet to climb aboard the bandwagon, this article offers a last chance before it steamrolls by. The technology reviewed below may at first intimidate, then perhaps overwhelm, but ultimately it will persuade the unconvinced that the art of writing has come as far in the last five or six years as it had in all the decades from Gutenberg to Steve Jobs. Born of solid tradition and the mercurial microprocessor, rhetoric has been reborn. p. 78
