It is certainly not getting the almost universal endorsement that GWH got, but that was a rare thing indeed and nobody should expect the same to happen again so soon. The good thing is that the major critics, the ones in the big league, are generally supportive. There are some unpleasant things said about the film though, and even Matt got some criticisms. I present below excerpts from the reivews and my analysis of them. That a great deal of this sharp little drama is set in the back rooms of New York's cardshark underground astoundingly doesn't limit its accessibility, even for those who can't tell royal and straight flushes apart. "Rounders"' success, then, is owed to its proficient cast and intriguing portrayal of a world not many viewers will be familiar with. The dialogue may be filled with terms that only true players will grasp, but you don't have to speak the language to understand the words a statement that pretty much sums up the effectiveness of the whole show.

Extractions: JAN Philosophers who distinguish freedom of action and freedom of will do so because our success in carrying out our ends depends in part on factors wholly beyond our control. Furthermore, there are always external constraints on the range of options we can meaningfully try to undertake. As the presence or absence of these conditions and constraints are not (usually) our responsibility, it is plausible that the central loci of our responsibility are our choices, or "willings." I have implied that free willings are but a subset of willings, at least as a conceptual matter. But not every philosopher accepts this. Rene Descartes, for example, identifies the faculty of will with freedom of choice, "the ability to do or not do something" (Meditation IV), and even goes so far as to declare that "the will is by its nature so free that it can never be constrained" (Passions of the Soul, I, art.41). In taking this strong polar position on the nature of will, Descartes is reflecting a tradition running through certain late Scholastics (most prominently, Suarez) back to John Duns Scotus. The majority view, however, is that we can readily conceive willings that are not free. Indeed, much of the debate about free will centers around whether we human beings

Extractions: This is a reading and discussion course concerned with probing diverse and changing responses of Americans to their environment. We shall examine various social, economic, institutional, geographic, ecological, and philosophical components of American attitudes and actions, in order to attain a sense of the environmental context of American history and America's place in a global vision. Although cast in historical perspective, the subject matter of the course may be relevant to anyone interested in environmental studies, and non-history majors as well as history majors, graduate students and undergraduates, are encouraged to participate. Bibliographies of original sources and secondary works will be introduced a week or more in advance of each new topic, and certain portions of books or shorter items will be identified to be read in common. Each participant will be expected to read an additional item or items from each bibliography and assume responsibility for relating it/them to the general focus of discussion. There will be latitude for individuals to follow out special interests both in reading and in writing, and for the group as a whole to define the focus of the sessions. The emphasis is on thoughtful reading, meaningful involvement in discussion, and critical written analyses of ideas and issues. In addition to the items to be read in common, each undergraduate student is expected to read a book for at least four topics and an article or two on each of the remaining topics. Graduate students are expected to read a book or more on at least seven topics and articles or portions of books on the remainder. At the time of reading, please prepare a brief written response to each item (a paragraph to a page in length), with one copy for the instructor and the other for personal reference.

The subject is so vast, and the range that can be included in a manageable book so small, that no one treatment can do it full justice. No one has ever mastered the entire literature on the subject, and given the exponential rate at which it's growing, probably no one ever will. Thus, before exploring the literature, it is important to be clear about your own reasons for exploration, so that you can narrow down the range of your research to manageable proportions: the part of the elephant that you find most interesting and that you feel you can handle. At the same time, it is important to be clear about the variety of reasons that authors may have for writing about Buddhism, and about the limitations inherent in their various approaches, so that you can develop a sense of which blind men (or women) will be your most reliable guides. In the broadest terms, the books on Buddhism fall into the two categories we used in the Introduction to The Buddhist Religion (hereafter referred to as BR): As for judging books that treat Buddhism as Dharma-Vinaya, it is useful to keep in mind a distinction proposed by Wilfred Cantwell Smith in his book

Genesis of the Project "I had always wanted to do a space adventure movie; something dramatic, realistic and contemporary about human space exploration," says producer Tom Jacobson, who co-conceived the idea of "Mission To Mars." "Its a great story and a great adventure," says director Brian De Palma. "Id never directed science fiction before, so the problem of shooting outer space and shooting a planet nobodys ever seen before gave me a whole new canvas with which to work. I tried to avoid all the clichés of science fiction movies and to give a whole new look and approach to this fantastic story." Unlike a lot of other science fiction films, the director acknowledges, the most exciting aspect of making the movie was to create realism. He recalls the 1950 classic "Destination Moon," which he saw as a young boy, and was one of the first science fiction films to attempt a high level of technical accuracy.
