Extractions: On October 20, 1994, the President signed into law the Improving America's Schools Act (IASA) of 1994, Public Law 103-382, which reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of (ESEA) of 1965. The Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (SDFSCA) of 1994 as Title IV, Part A of the IASA became effective on July 1, 1995. The SDFSCA is a critical part of the national systemic reform effort. It creates a comprehensive Federal effort in support of the seventh National Education Goal that all schools will be free of alcohol, drugs, violence, and the presence of firearms, and offer a disciplined environment conducive to learning by the year 2000. The Department of Alcohol and Drug Prevention Programs also receives funds from the SDFSCA to support community efforts to keep youth drug and alcohol free. The mission of the Healthy Kids Program Office (HKPO) is to provide leadership to keep youth alcohol, tobacco and other drugs free. Successful drug, alcohol and tobacco prevention, intervention and cessation programs are part of this effort. Overview Drug and violence prevention programs are essential components of a comprehensive learning support system that supports academic achievement for all students. Comprehensive coordinated, effective drug and violence prevention programs help communities create safe disciplined, drug-free schools where the climate is conducive to the achievement of high standards for all students. The SDFSCA provides for linages between schools and communities and encourages community-wide strategies in support of comprehensive drug and violence prevention. Injury Prevention prevention takes careful planning and a team approach to safety. The goal is to forma safety partnership based evolution of kidsafe rides and ride-safe kids. http://www.saferparks.org/injury_prevention.htm
Extractions: Public Education According to amusement industry trade organizations, half a billion patrons visit amusement parks and carnivals in the United States each year. Patrons range from veteran ride enthusiasts to toddlers who've never been on an amusement ride before. Amusement attractions range from kiddie trains to multiple inversion coasters, carousels to whirling rides, inflatable bouncers to catapulted bungie jumpers, wet playground equipment to 400-foot water slides. Injuries range from stubbed toes and bruised knees to death and dismemberment. Because of the strong forces exerted by the machinery, the extent of injury from an amusement ride accident is largely a matter of luck. If a rider is tossed into a bush, for example, he might walk away without injury. But if that same rider is ejected into a wall, the outcome will be far more serious. The causes of ride-related injuries, and the strategies for preventing them, are equally diverse. That diversity is illustrated in the

Extractions: Falls Church, Virginia Case Story A girl in the fifth grade at a Fairfax County Public elementary school was absent for four days. When her teacher called home to find out how the child was doing, she learned that the girl had fallen and hurt her foot so badly that she could not walk on it. Although both her parents worked, the family had no health insurance and did not know where or how to obtain medical care for her, so they kept her at home, hoping her injury would heal. The family eagerly accepted assistance from Partnership for Healthier Kids, which provided the necessary referrals. The little girl got the treatment she needed for her broken foot and returned to school. Program Description - Inova Health System's Partnership for Healthier Kids is an intensive prevention and care coordination program focused on schools, families and neighborhoods. The Partnership has spent two years developing and testing programs to bring health and safety assessment, preventive health care education, and care coordination to children and their families through elementary schools. The program has been built on thorough and sound collection of data to pinpoint needs and opportunities. The Partnership was created to increase the percentage of children who receive immunizations, injury and smoking prevention services, and have a source of coordinated primary care for their preventive and episodic healthcare.
