Active Listservs S, Teaching Social Studies in Secondary schools, Fall 1999. K12ASSESSL, The k-12assessment list, Fall KYARTS, kentucky k-12 Arts and Humanities Teachers Discussion http://www.loyola.edu/education/facstaff/marcovitz/Listservs/Listserv_List_Short
Extractions: This is a list of listservs (i.e., email mailing lists) to which my students have successfully subscribed over the last few semesters. I do not guarantee that a listserv appearing on this list will be active, but there is a good chance that it will be since I know that people have used the list over the last year. This list is to be used in conjunction with the longer list of listservs that gives complete instructions on how to sign up for each listserv. The fact that a listserv appears on the longer list and not this list is not an indication that the listserv is inactive; it just means that my students have not gotten mail from it. If you find an interesting listserv on the longer list, feel free to try to subscribe to it. Be careful. Some lists are not at all active, some lists are moderately active, and some lists are very active. If you do not get any messages from a listserv within a week, you should consider trying a different listserv. If you get too many messages from a listserv (more messages than you can keep up with based on the frequency you can read email), then unsubscribe from that listserv (by following the instructions that were sent to you when you originally subscribed). Note that many listservs require you to confirm your subscription before you can sign up. Usually, you must confirm your subscription within 48 hours. Therefore, after you follow the instructions to sign up for a listserv, be sure to check your email within the next couple of days, so you can follow the instructions sent to you to confirm your subscription.

Talking Points learning to k12 curriculum and to organize schools to maximize role service andservice-learning play in k-12 student academic Wilmer S. Cody, Chief, kentucky. http://www.az.com/~pickeral/talkingpoints.html
Extractions: Brochure and Application Overview The Compact for Learning and Citizenship is an organization of state chiefs and superintendents committed to linking school-based service and service-learning to K-12 curriculum and to organize schools to maximize community volunteer efforts. Goal 1 Service and Service-Learning Compact members recognize the value of engaging students in service activities that are attached to the curriculum and meet local community needs. Recent studies clearly show that students involved in community service-learning not only tend to be more involved and better citizens, but also significantly improve their academic knowledge and skills. Service and service-learning should be integral components of all K-12 students study. K-12 teachers should be provided the formal opportunity to understand the principles and good practices of service-learning . This can occur in pre-service teaching training and/or in-service professional development. Service-learning is an effective pedagogy to meet national, state, and local education initiatives (e.g., safe and drug free schools, school-to-work, Goals 2000, education reform, etc.). Goal 2 Maximizing the Efforts of Community Volunteers Compact members are committed to providing high-quality opportunities for citizens to volunteer in K-12 schools. Members understand the value of volunteers and the role they play in assisting both students and teachers to succeed.

Extractions: Kentucky Department of Education The National Commission on Teaching and America's Future (1996) reports that a key factor in student learning is teacher expertise. Professional development is an important factor in building that expertise, and high-quality professional development "promotes continuous inquiry and improvement embedded in the daily life of schools," according to the U.S. Department of Education. In efforts to reach Proficiency by 2014, the Consortium at AEL and the Kentucky Department of Education have established a team of highly skilled educators to ongoing professional development activities to mathematics and science teachers.
