Editorial Review Product Description At last -- the Jewish holidays transformed into exquisite celebrations, graced with sublime chic and elegant ease for the contemporary Jewish reader. Combining the flair of Martha Stewart with the warmth and accessibility of a delightful neighbor, Rita Milos Brownstein breathes new life into traditional Jewish holiday celebrations. Entertaining in high style creates marvelous holiday memories for your family, your friends, and yourself. For each of the ten major holidays, Brownstein offers suggestions for creative projects that will bring the whole family together and mouth-watering menus that make it effortless to prepare festivities of true material and spiritual splendor. With more than 85 full-color photographs and easy-to-follow step-by-step illustrations, this captivating book will motivate you to explore your Jewish heritage and use your imagination to make it your own. Jewish Holiday Style is packed with dazzling and inspiring ideas. For Rosh Hashanah, host a honey-tasting party to celebrate the sweetness of a new year. If you love the ocean, observe Sukkot in a sukkah with a seaside motif -- even if you live in the cornfields of the Midwest. Make your own Chanukah menorahs -- try a simple cruse of oil that reflects the miracle of the oil in the Holy Temple, or an elaborate metalworked candelabra that is sure to become a family heirloom. For the Passover table, create personalized pillows for your guests, which.will allow them to recline like the royalty of old while you serve a lavish yet simple-to-prepare feast. As part of this eye-opening tour through the Jewish calendar, Brownstein also highlights the historical origins and religious importance of each major holiday with a delightful essay that brings ancient rituals into the modern day. Think of the fast of Yom Kippur, for instance, as "a day spa for the soul...the too rare opportunity to get in touch with the things that really matter." Purim is "the definitive holiday of joy and merriment," commemorating a bright moment in the often somber history of the Jewish people. On Shabbat, "appreciate that you are joining the wave of Jews who are kindling their candles as the sun falls, working its way around the world." At once a handbook of creative ideas and a primer on the spiritual significance of the Jewish holidays, Jewish Holiday Style is the first lifestyle book to address these all-important rituals and ceremonies, an elegantly designed volume that blends sensational crafts and delectable cooking with the richness of Judaism's 3,300-year-old tradition. Bursting with fresh ideas and exciting new looks, here, finally, is the book you've been waiting for. Let the holiday celebrations begin! Customer Reviews (7)

Editorial Review Product Description The Jewish Gardening Cookbook gives easy-to-follow instructions for raising foods that have been harvested since ancient times, such as grapes, figs, dates, and pomegranates. It also provides carefully selected, tasty, and easy-to-prepare traditional and modern recipes using these foodstuffs for holidays, festivals, and life cycle events. Editorial Review Product Description The Jewish Holiday Cookbook is filled with 250 strikingly original recipes, many of them annotated with fascinating stories about the customs and cultures from which they derive. Chicken soup and gefilte fish, brisket and potato pancakes are here -- what Jewish cookbook would be complete without them? -- but The Jewish Holiday Cookbook goes far beyond the expected, presenting exciting, authentic recipes from the many varied traditions of Jewish cuisine all over the world. Whether they're classic dishes or brand-new discoveries, all the recipes have been thoroughly tested and adapted for the modern kitchen. Truly international in scope, the recipes -- both Ashkenazic and Sephardic -- are drawn from such unexpected locales as Turkey, Greece, Cuba, Iraq, and Algeria as well as Eastern and Western Europe. The book's distinctive features include a glossary of ingredients and, for easy reference, an index of recipes by category of dish -- Appetizers, Drinks, Salads and Vegetables, Grains and Pasta, Soups, Fish, Meat, Poultry, Dairy, Breads and Muffins, Fruits and Puddings, Cakes, Cookies, Pastries, and Candies. All recipes are kosher and are designated as meat, dairy, or pareve, and dishes suitable for Pesach are marked. Most important, the book is arranged according to the way people will use it, by holiday: Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret and Sim- Customer Reviews (3)
Everybody loves the food!
favorite cookbook
One of the best sourcesfor Jewish holiday cooking! Since I am not Jewish, but I wanted to be as authentic and Kosher as possible, I was happy that Gloria included historical background and symbology for the Seder plate and for traditions behind both Ashkenasic and Sephardic foods, such as the "Long Roasted Eggs," which our friends look forward to each year as a very special part of our Seder (which we call "dinner with a script").Before reading her book, I didn't know about Sephardic Jews and the differences in the ingredients they use. Gloria writes with a friendly tone and a light touch, which I found encouraging since I was neophyte to Jewish cooking styles. If you have to pick only one book, this is the ONE! ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description From the time Abraham and Sarah entertained passing strangers in their simple tent, hospitality has been a significant aspect of Jewish life. For generations, Jewish parents have taught their children how to create a traditional home, passing down many lifetimes of accumulated wisdom along with their family recipes. But as the world changes, Jewish entertaining changes too. Modern Jews want to add exciting new dishes to their traditional menus and they want a practical guide to serving elegant meals whether for a large crowd or an intimate gathering. Now, in the only book of its kind, The World of Jewish Entertaining demystifies the experience of entertaining. Marks presents a "Guide for the Perplexed Host," practical advice, easy-to-follow recipes for a wide variety of dishes from the most homey and traditional foods to haute cuisine, and complete menus for and much more. In addition, he provides background information on all the events, putting them in a traditional Jewish context. The World of Jewish Entertaining is the perfect cookbook for anyone looking for a fresh new perspective on entertaining. Customer Reviews (2)

Editorial Review Product Description Here's the must-have cookbook for the modern home cook who has little time but lots of enthusiasm for keeping up with Jewish traditions. In her foreword, Marlene Sorosky admits that her upbringing in a tyranically Orthodox household spoiled Jewish holidays for her until she was well into adulthood. While writing this book, however, she discovered the joyous spirit of both the holidays and Judaism--apparent in every page of Fast and Festive Meals for the Jewish Holidays. Customer Reviews (18)

Editorial Review Product Description Here is the only book that helps you plan your Jewish holiday tables and meals in high style and with minimal effort. "Entertaining on the Jewish Holidays" is appropriate for all who are seeking creative, fresh ideas to distinguish their holiday entertaining efforts. Whether you are a busy housewife, a working mother, or a stylish single with the challenges of playing host – this book will put you at ease and solve all of your entertaining problems. You will learn to create an effective and original motif for each holiday – using items that are readily available and inexpensive. Symbolism is the key to effective table decoration: The story and spirit of each holiday should be reflected in the décor. On Purim, for example, using black triangular place mats symbolizes the three-cornered hat of wicked Haman. Placing a Passover plate on a bed of bricks will remind us of the Israelites’ labor under Egyptian bondage. In addition to these creative ideas for holiday décor, the book features: Brief essays explaining the background and significance of every Jewish holiday; Checklists of traditional ceremonial objects and foods; Meaningful guest mementos of your holiday celebration; Delicious holiday recipes; Numerous color photos showing how to implement these concepts; A selection of appropriate holiday songs.
